Jessica Chastain, who started her Hollywood career with guest-roles on several television shows, has definitely levelled up playing numerous strong characters over the course of her career. She is making it clear that she personally prefers seeing actresses in roles that are interesting and complex.
Jessica Chastain, who stars in the upcoming sci-fi film "The Martian" alongside Matt Damon, said, "Looking at the films like 'Elektra' and 'Aeon Flux,' the problem that studios have, is that they try to create kick-ass actresses very sexualized. They have to be in some catsuit."
The Hollywood star added, "But looking at the magnificent female roles, like Ripley in 'Alien,' the actress is a very sexy woman with less make-up. The actress is in a T-shirt and jeans." "What's sexy about the actress is how capable she is."

Reportedly, this isn't the first time that the 38 year old Jessica Chastain slams Hollywood's female superhero problem. Last year, Chastain told the Huffington Post this, "I was talking to friends about superheroes, and someone actually said, 'Female superhero roles fail at the box office.' I said, 'Actresses where her sole power is her sex and her sexual attraction will not arouse curiosity to watch. If a female is there posing and trying to be sexually attractive, no one is interested in that."
Short of saying that for people to have a better appreciation of their roles as superheroes, actresses in their portrayal of such roles should exude intelligence and strength of character and not simply try to sell their

... Academy Award for Best Actress, and the captivating dynamic between the sterile Starling and male anti-hero of Lecter, it is peculiar that the thriller genre has not seen more characters in the vein of Detective Starling. What can be acknowledged is that the character of the female within the thriller genre need not masculinize or sexualize herself to be a success.

Like a contemporary Dorothy, Romancing the Stone's Joan Wilder must travel to Columbia and survive incredible adventures to learn that she had always been a capable and valuable person. Romancing the Stone (Robert Zemeckis, 1984) is part of a series of 1980s action comedies that disrupted previous expectations for female heroines. These female protagonists manage to subvert the standard action narrative and filmic gaze, learning to rescue themselves and to resist others' limited vision of them. Not only did these action comedies present strong female characters, they also offered a new filmic experience for female audiences. The commercial success of comic action heroines paved the way for women to appear in serious action roles--without the personal sacrifices required of Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley. Figures like Joan Wilder serve as an important link between previous strong yet feminine screen personas and current female stars.

Bullock and McCarthy worked well cast alongside each other in this first female action comedy crime cop buddy. The two actresses adapted nicely in their differing characters, showing that no matter how different their approaches to law enforcement may be, their independent and strong natures effortlessly brought in laughs and attitudes towards each other. The smart costumes designed by Catherine Marie Thomas, creatively reinforced the characters’ personalities in the beginning of the film, but naturally changed as the F.B.I. agent and detective began accepting each other at times of the other’s crazy
For example, Detective Shannon Mullins, is crude, loud and abrasive, and we all love her for it. Not only does McCarthy not once wear makeup in The Heat, she also dresses in baggy attire. She’s one of the boys. Hollywood’s beauty standards can not touch an unruly woman, nor can the constant pressure to be seen as the ultimate sexual symbol. Mulvey pointed out that, “in Hollywood films, a woman’s power is associated with her ability to use her sexual allure to arrest the narrative action” (237).

Pretty Woman, 1990s Hollywood movie, embodies many new as well as old values and ideologies. I was surprised when I saw that, the old themes and sexual stereotypes are not completely abandoned, but the old portrayals of gender stereotypes are transmuted.
Women have made progress in the film industry in terms of the type of role they play in action films, although they are still portrayed as sex objects. The beginning of “a new type of female character” (Hirschman, 1993, pg. 41-47) in the world of action films began in 1976 with Sigourney Weaver, who played the leading role in the blockbuster film ‘Aliens’ as Lt. Ellen Ripley. She was the captain of her own spaceship, plus she was the one who gave out all the orders. Until then, men had always been the ones giving the orders; to see a woman in that type of role was outlandish. This was an astonishing change for the American industry of film. Sometime later, in 1984, Linda Hamilton starred in ‘The Terminator’, a film where she was not the leading character, but a strong female character as Sarah Connor. She had a combination of masculine and feminine qualities as “an androgynous superwoman, resourceful, competent and courageous, while at the same time caring, sensitive and intuitive” (Hirschman, 1993, pg. 41-47). These changes made in action films for female’s roles stirred up a lot of excitement in the “Western society” (Starlet, 2007). The demand for strong female characters in action films grew to a new high when Angelina Jolie starred in ‘Tomb Raider’ in 2001 and then in the sequel, ‘Tomb Raider II: The Cradle of Life’ in 2003 as Lara Croft. Her strong female character was not only masculine, but was also portrayed as a sex object. Most often, strong women in these types of films tend to fight without even gaining a mark. At the end of each fight, her hair and makeup would always be perfect. The female characters in these action films, whether their role was as the lead character or a supporting character, had similar aspects. I...
