Tuesday depositions from an alleged victim in the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse care were unsealed and released. These documents indicate that head coach Joe Paterno knew about the abuse as far back as 1976 and chose to look the other way. The unsealed testimony released on Tuesday gives details on a prior reported claim of a 14-year-old boy telling Joe Paterno the former head football coach at Penn State, in 1976 that the now former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky had sexually abused him. These most recent depositions stem from a case involving Penn State insurance provider Pennsylvania Manufacturers Association Insurance Co., which is seeking to deny reimbursement for settlement money that the school has already paid to the alleged victims. During grand jury testimony in 2011 Paterno said he first learned of inappropriate sexual contact by Sandusky in 2001. "I do not know of anything else that Jerry would be involved in of that nature, no. I do not know of it. You did mention -- I think you said something about a rumor. It may have been discussed in my presence, something else about somebody. I don't know. I don't remember, and I could not honestly say I heard a rumor," Paterno testified. Is a winning program worth more than the damaged lives of these young boys or other children in other athletic programs? Yes, everyone loves a winning team but athletic programs have been steered away from the promotion of helping young people learn discipline, self-accountability, teamwork and rewards and are now about promoting a winning score, big network deals to funnel money into the pockets of school
