Jeremy has learned a handful of lessons on his journey to find the keys to unlock his father’s box. On his journey Jeremy has also met tons of new people. The lessons he has been learning have started when he and his best friend Lizzy Muldoun got in trouble while trying to find one of the keys to the box. They got in trouble because they broke into one of Jeremy’s father’s old friends office. The security guard caught them and then they were given the choice between doing community service at the park or helping an old man named Mr. Oswald mail some deliveries. Jeremy and Lizzy, two seventh graders, chose to help the old man Mr. Oswald and ever since they made that decision they have been learning many different things. During their first
... was a success, earning over twenty thousand dollars. Steven is at 8th grade graduation, a beautiful girl to his left, and another to his right. Jeffrey’s leukemia is improving, proving that the Alpers’ sacrifices were all worth it. During the conclusion of the story, Steven’s development as a person is apparent. He goes from being “pretty sure about life” (pg. 1) to “I guess maybe my biggest achievement was learning that there’s more to life than taking the big drum solo,” (pg. 270). At the beginning of the year, Jeffrey was under Steven’s list of “Truly Annoying Things.” By 8th grade graduation, Steven has learned to greatly appreciate his brother, even to say “Jeffrey, I love you.” Over the course of the entire year, the Alpers exemplified how sacrificing important aspects of their life can help in overcoming hardships.

Sammy the main character in “A&P”, and Tommy the main character in “Gryphon” face a struggle that will put them to the test. Tommy faces the conflict of, does he believe the substitute teacher and defend her against everyone else or does he follow what everybody else is doing. In their stories, Tommy and Sammy are put up against a conflict that they have never seen before, and their “job” is to decide what they should do and how they should approach the problem.

Wes (the author) has a family who wants to see him succeed. His mother, made one of the biggest effects in Wes’s life when she decided to send him to military story, after seeing he was going down the wrong path. Perhaps, the other Wes’s mother tried her best to make sure he grew up to be a good person, but unfortunately Wes never listen. His brother, Tony was a drug dealer who wish he could go back in time and make the right decisions and he wanted Wes to be different than him. He didn’t want his brother to end up like him and even after he tried everything to keep Wes away from drugs, nothing worked and he gave up. Most importantly, a family who responds fast because right after his mother saw him falling down the wrong hill she didn’t hesitate to do something about it. The other Wes isn’t as lucky, as I believe since his mother already had so much pressure over keeping her job and her son Tony being involved in drugs. ...ed on him. He however goes back to previous ways for a while until he gets a job and finally realizes that he is grown up. This relates directly to society because we must all grow up and we are unable to do so until we realize it for ourselves.
Douglas Light said that our imagination is better than any answer to a question. Light distinguished between two genres: fantasy from fiction. He described how fantasy stimulates one’s imagination, which is more appealing, but fiction can just be a relatable story. In the same way, Books and movies are very different entities. In the short parable Doubt, the readers are lured in to the possibility of a scandalous relationship between a pastor and an alter boy. The readers’ curiosity is ignited because they are not given all the details. Therefore, their mind wanders further than the plot to create a story and characters that acted on one’s imagination; thus, the story became entertaining- flooded by the questions of what? Who? How? By which the reader can only answer. At this point, the readers create their own movie in a way. They will determine important aspects: how the character speaks, looks like, and reacts. Whereas, in the movie, the reader has no choice but to follow the plot laid out in front of them. No longer can they picture the characters in their own way or come up with their different portrayals. The fate of the story, while still unpredictable, was highly influenced by the way the characters looked, spoke, and presented themselves on screen. The movie leaves little to viewers' imaginations. In order to be entertained by literature or art, the viewer needs to feel that they can use their imagination and not be confined to a plot that reveals all.
... dilemma of his protagonist, but also exposing the moral foundations of the institutional pillars in the black community" (Bell 224). While criticism of the church's role in supporting subtle racism is justified, it is also true that John cleverly utilizes the rich resources of the church that were available to him. Would he be better off following Roy into the streets? Or Royal, Gabriel's first son, who also found his way into the streets and the reendured a violent death? John "wanted to be with these boys in the street, heedless and thoughtless, wearing out his treacherous and bewildering body" (30). He recognizes, however, even in the semi-transparent consciousness of a man-child, that he is being forced to make "so cruel a choice" (40) between the ways of the world, which in his community can too often lead to violence and self-destruction, and the ways of God.
Within minutes of opening, the father, Ryuhei, walks away from his job rather than be laid off in the immediate future (due to the growing practice of outsourcing). In order to avoid the dishonor of this event, Ryuhei cleverly covers up and hides his unemployment from the family. Yet, the truth is an attempt to overcome his unemployment and the potential for disgrace in the eyes of his family and community. Even when the problem of unemployment is resolved, Ryuhei continues to avoid the truth. As a former director in a large company, Ryuhei expects more meaningful employment, yet struggles with accepting his fate as a simple mall janitor. All of these obstacles take their toll on the character as observed in his attitude towards the family, whether it is with his wife, or with his sons. A horrible consequence of Ryuhei’s rage presents itself when the family receives a letter from their younger son’s (Kenji) teacher asking for them to allow him to attend music school. Kenji ultimately ends up in the hospital due to his father’s overwhelming rage. This situation only further increas...
