Jem Finch Big Brother

Jem Finch is a prime representation of a big brother. Now, most people think of older siblings as an authority in a younger child’s life. However, there is a significant difference between an ‘older sibling’ and a ‘big brother’. A big brother is a friend as well as a role model. Jem Finch meets is both, and he is good at both. He tries to teach his little sister Scout that school isn’t all bad, and that she will appreciate it later. He also enjoys playing with her and being her companion in her adventures. Jem is a paramount older sibling to his sister, as he perceptive, repentant of his mistakes, and a playful friend.

Throughout To Kill A Mockingbird, Jem has been maturing in many ways. Towards the beginning of the book he was much less caring about the things that went on in the adult world. But after his father does something he doesn’t seem to be proud of, instead of pushing, “Jem said ’I reckon if he’d wanted us to know it, he’da told us. If he was proud of it, he’da told us.’” (To Kill A Mockingbird page 130). Rather than rebelling against his father, even if he wanted to know the truth, Jem protects himself by letting an unnecessary matter drop out of relevancy. If a big brother wont play with and enjoy his siblings, they will never come to appreciate him as much as they potentially could. Jem and Scout have never really had this problem as they have always been best friends. So when he is dared to touch the house of the town recluses, he dives right into the challenge. “Jem threw open the gate and sped to the side of the house, slapped it with his palm and ran back past us, not waiting to see if his foray was successful”.
