a small flat on South Terrace, after his parents had to rent out their suburban house due to straitened circumstances. From the flat he could look out at alleyways and back lanes, rooftops and little side streets: an urban landscape that fascinated him. The geometry of the buildings spoke to him, and he loved to explore these alleys and laneways with his friends after school. This is what inspired him. No more than one idea, pattern or texture, repeated in different colour combinations have been done by smart. It was a hard time for someone who painted pictures carefully and methodically, and thought of each one as an individual work with its own problems and artistic interest. But it only got harder after the market for abstraction collapsed with the so-called death of painting in the 1970s and then the climate of postmodernism that dominated the last decades of the century. Jeffrey's work is also included in the collections of the Australian National University, Canberra and Sydney Universities.

form. Cahill Expressway, 1962 painted by Jeffrey Smart is an oil on plywood painting.it depicts a modern man standing in the emptiness of a large interesting roadway. The painting depicts urban landscapes as well as complexity. The painter shows distinctive vision of a unique artist. Jeffrey in this artwork best depicts the contrast between the elements. The composition of this artwork is at a confronting angle, the under-pass wall highlights the 2 roads and this stretches the artwork. He paints the left side of the painting brighter than the right. He also uses shadowing which creates a real life sense. Jeffrey paints this artwork in a symbolic way. He highlights the roads and the man. This is symbolic for a city life and evaluates what he is painting about. The mood of the Cahill express is dark and dull. The artwork depicts a scene is in a city highlighting the physical environment. It shows an overpassing road which is highlighted under a tunnels shadow which elaborates on its mood. The texture of this artwork is in great detail. Elements such as the street lights give the atmosphere a good vibe, even though the painting is dark the artwork appeals as it covers many techniques. Alma Mahler feeding the birds 1967-1968. It’s an oil on canvas painting depicting an old lady feeding the seagulls. It’s a medium sized painting with a large water tank in the top right with a wall that cuts through the painting. The painting has much texture as it is artificial looking, it appeals as being bright. The railing also appeals as it has meeting edges and contour lines. This really makes the sense that the railing is very long and it also stretches the artwork. The contrast of the blue sky and dark wall creates unity around the painting. It makes a focal point and gives the artwork shape and form. This type of painting has recently attracted other artist as it shows complex media in its style alone. The intention of this artwork is to capture the media and influence the style of painting. His influence to the art world has changed the way that people see these paintings .Jeffrey Smart has used the elements and principles of art to catch the viewer’s eye, this is why this artwork has been a success. Yarragon siding was inspired by a ramshackle shed on a railway platform, seen by the artist while he was driving through the Victorian countryside. Driving and seeing this was a major factor of why smart was influenced by this work. It’s an oil on canvas drawing, painted by smart in 1921. The artwork is a clear depiction of what you would see on a farm. Smart has conveyed this very well using many techniques of art. The media in the art piece is 3 barrels, a tin wall, fire box and a man with a newspaper. The style smart has used to do this is very unique and hyper real. The painting is very depicting as it shows realism. His shading is very well done as well as him blending the barrels into the tin like shed. The texture of this painting is soft. It shows a lot of detail but it does highlight certain objects. The intention of smart was to show some symbolism. The mood of this artwork is basic, it just feels like something that you would look at day to day. But smart didn’t want it to just be like this so he added interesting media .He did this style of painting to capture what a ramshackle shed would look like. It basically presents the ideas and qualities of the shed in the era. The reason I chose these artworks by Jeffrey smart, is that they are inspiring and pleasing to the eye. Cahill express is my favourite of the best three artworks I discussed. I find the artwork more influential because it depicts a modern day scene along with capturing media. Smarts style of work is very depicting and precise. He also paints urban scaped themes which relate to subjects that i enjoy. The texture along with great detail makes these works of art interesting. Personally I look up to smarts artwork and aim to be like that. Overall my opinion is at a high standard, I hope to achieve highly in my art project with similar theme to Jeffrey smart. Jeffrey Smart has held over 50 popular exhibitions.
A representation of his works was held at many Art Galleries around Australia in the year 1999. This was one of the ways he became very famous. In 2001 Jeffrey held concurrent exhibitions in Brisbane and Sydney Galleries. This was clearly smarts most successful time of his life. The Brisbane exhibition was one of his most recent works along with the Sydney exhibition being popular. Drawings and studies from 1942 through to 2001, show that Jeffrey smart increased in his art complexity throughout his works and galleries. Jeffrey smart has improved dramatically in his painting style. It was towards the end of his life that he became popular and successful. Smart has contributed to my painting as he has been eye opening and inspiring to me. I have only heard of smarts work this year and he has made a big difference. He has opened my mind to urban scaped themes which has contributed to my artwork. This is why I believe Jeffrey smart is a good

Asher Lev and his mentor, Jacob Kahn illustrated a relationship of God’s creation and temptation from the devil. Throughout the novel, Kahn pushes Asher to devote his life to art, and describes it as “a tradition; it is a religion...It has it’s fanatics, and I will force [Asher] to master it” (Potok 213). Throughout Jewish texts, it is clearly stated that God’s people, whom Asher Lev belongs to in the novel, will face temptations from The Other Side that will lead them away from Him. As art is against Orthodox Jewish beliefs, another Jew persuading and encouraging Asher Lev to continue his passion of painting, can be a symbol of the devil in disguise. This is furthered, as Kahn introduced his pupil to many

Joseph Mallord William Turner, 1775-1851, born the son of a London Barber and Wigmaker, is considered one of the greatest European artists of the 19th century. Turner, the English romantic landscape painter, watercolourists and printmaker, was regarded as a controversial and revolutionary figure by his contemporaries despite his training being similar to other artists of the time. His work ‘Walton Bridge’, Oil on Canvas 1806-10, reflects much of his training as a young artists as well as his well-known Romantic style. In this essay I will follow the beginnings of Turners artistic life, showing how his influences, training and opinions surrounding landscape painting have influenced his work ‘Walton Bridge.’ I will further explore how art critics, fellow artists and the wider public of the 19th Century received ‘Walton Bridge’ and his Landscape paintings in general.
Serpico (1973) is a movie that reveals the true story of Frank Serpico who was the only honest cop in the New York police sector at his time. The film shows the realistic view of the corruption that was evidenced in the New York police and highlights the character of Frank as being honest and courageous. Although he started as an inexperienced cop, he later worked as an undercover officer and was determined to bust all the criminal activities especially the drug dealers and pushers. Unlike the other cops, Serpico refused to take any bribes from the wrongdoers. More so, he felt that the other officers were doing wrong by accepting bribes and wanted to expose the situation. The other officers were so corrupt that they collected more money through bribes than the salary they earned, a situation that did not please Serpico. His strong stand concerning corruption made his friends turn against him, placing his life in danger. The anti-corruption efforts of Serpico jeopardized his life at the hands of his colleagues. He was later transferred to the Narcotics Squad where he was shot by a drug dealer after his partners betrayed him by failing to support him. The cop was then rushed to hospital. The shooting made Frank deaf since it affected the brain, rendering

He received his education from University of Louisville and is a world renowned color artist. Morris Louis and Ken Noland’s works of art had a huge impact on Sam Gilliam and his works. Gilliam taught in Louisville publics schools and many art colleges. He is known for his colorful and unique art. He was one of the first artists to not frame his art work instead he would just paint on a bare canvas or drapes. His art style is very modern and loud. When someone looks at his works of art they have instant imagination and questions. Gilliam leaves his works of art up for interpretation, there is no solid meaning to them. Anyone can make see whatever they want, his art allows for freedom and Ray II is no different.
Media. The main means of mass communication regarded collectively. It comes in the form of t.v., radio, newspapers, magazines etc. The media has a way of portraying a story in a way that they want it to be seen by audiences. In other words, the media only tells us only what they want us to hear; which, may or may not be the truth or include the entire story. The media is always looking for the next best story and the competition to be the first one on the scene can be intense. A documentary by 9.14 Productions tells the story of a man and his art collection; The Barnes Foundation.
“How awful it is for that person which suffers this great wrath and infinite misery!”(Edwards 89-90). This is the best example of Edwards doing what he does best in his sermons; using literary devices to scare people. Why would anyone do this? Well, he uses fear for persuasion. How he does this is carefully and delicately layered in his words. Edwards uses loaded language, vivid imagery, and specific types of sentences in order to scare his audience into becoming better Puritans.

Artists have a knowledge of all the artists that preceding them, creating a visual vocabulary from the art that they have seen and understand. For Jean-Michel Basquiat, that knowledge translates into his work, despite never having formal training in an art school. It is his awareness and understanding of the culture that surrounds him that brings a layer of sophistication to his painting, setting it apart from street graffiti that has been painted on canvas. Basquiat’s Untitled (Julius Caesar on Gold) (1981) is a confrontation of his own identity that is created with the visual vocabulary of artists that preceded him.
Vincent Van Gogh is celebrated today as the greatest Dutch painter, besides Rembrandt (“Vincent Willem”). Born in Holland on March 30, 1853, Van Gogh had five other siblings and two parents, and although his mother was an artist, he never bothered with art until much later in his life (“Vincent Willem”). Van Gogh had many shortcomings in his little and dismal time on earth and it was not until his late twenties, after all else had failed, that he gave art a chance. Thanks to the help of his older brother Theo, Van Gogh was able to put all of his emotions and mental worries into productive use, creating masterpieces that are sold today for millions of dollars (“Vincent Willem”). Although he is hugely successful today, Van Gogh had little to no fame in his lifetime and he struggled immensely with his mental state of mind for many years. Ultimately his mental illness (some believe there were more than one) lead to his untimely death, but his turbulent state of mind also helped him to create magnificent images that are revered as some of the greatest pieces of art of today.
When I found out I qualified to be a candidate for the NJHS, I knew I had to take this chance. This group is made up of people who depict leadership, character, citizenship, academic success, and service and I would love to join. These characteristics wouldn't just be valuable for a candidate to have, but for everyone to have to exceed in life. If I were to be in the National Junior Honor Society, it would give me an opportunity to ameliorate my future and motivate me to do better.
The main driving element in William Morris’s life has been the nature around him and the houses he lived in. The most prominent influence was the Kelmscott Manor. Therefore, I chose to go with Kelmscott Manor’s layout plan that exhibits the “inspirational garden “ that led to most of his design decisions, a map that depicts the pockets in the manor and how Morris was inspired by it. In addition to this, an original drawing of the Kelmscott Manor’s exterior that depicts how the manor amalgamated within the garden. To reinforce this, I picked a watercolor of the Kelmscott Manor and a photo that captivates the various perspectives of the garden in the manor. Moving on to his designs that interprets his love for nature I picked up the very first of his wallpaper design of the trellis that has a very naturalistic touch to it with the vines which seemed to be an extension of the “inspiration garden” on to the paper. Also chose one of the wallpapers he designed during the middle of his lifetime and one of his last designs as well. The underlying concept behind picking those was to outline the consistency in his design concept throughout his life. William Morris was a poet , whose poetry and compositions were also inspired by nature, and to depict his poetry in form of naturalism concept I picked a stance from one of his compositions that talks about forest, flora and fauna which directly ties to his underlying concept. Also the compositions he wrote always had engraved borders which was ...

Michael Finkle, the author of The Strange & Curious Tale of the Last True Hermit from GQ magazine, has a certain fondness of Christopher Knight, the North Pond Hermit. He shows this in his article by using language that never condemns Mr. Knight for stealing or making Mr. Knight seem like a filthy thief living in the middle of the woods terrorizing the locals. Mr. Finkle instead paints him more as a gentle soul by using softer language. Finkle uses emotion and logic to persuade the reader that Knight is a kind and gentle soul that means no harm. Mr. Finkle strays away from using language that could condemn or paint a bad picture of of Mr. Knight.
Vincent Van Gogh’s well known artwork had a profound impact on the world. After being rejected countless times by other jobs, Van Gogh realized that art was his calling and he begun to research other artists and various artwork. He visited several museums in London and got inspiration from many of the impressionists living in Europe at the time.
