According to Khalil Gibran, a Lebanese-American writer and poet, “Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars.” (The Broken Wings). The meaning of this quote is that when suffering with problems that can make events in life worse, makes the strongest souls and changes them for better, these problems create life-long scars that may never heal, yet the scars show a perspective on how to be stronger and grow from these problems and/or these mistakes to make sure they do not happen again. With Jeannette, she has been living with life-long problems ever since she was a kid. That created her scars from being either physical or mental, which made her the woman she is today. Even though a lot of people had problems with Jeannette being friends with Dinitia, Jeannette knew that she could be friends with whoever she wanted to be friends with, she knew that she could stand up against people and say Dinitia was a good friend. This helped Jeanette grow with perseverance, resilience, and even being brave. Throughout Jeanette’s challenges in life, she fought for what was right and grew up knowing she’d make a change in the world. Jeannette was a strong kid, but once she got older she became a woman of respect and mentally challenged herself to grow up to be more mature, intelligent, and independent. “My mind seized up because what Ernie had said was true: We did live in garbage.” Ernie stuck his face in mine. Because of this quote and what happens through the times when Ernie Goad is around Jeannette, it’s clearly obvious that she knows she lives in a bad situation and this is a piece of her life that’s true even when it’s bad, but it shows that this is a good beginning part of her life where she can start to realize things need to be
