Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring
Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring was developed while she was teaching at the University of Colorado. It is based on her own views of nursing, combined with her doctoral studies in psychology. Her hope was to focus nursing as its own distinct discipline in the health profession, with its own values, knowledge, and mission to society. Throughout her work, Watson indicates that all humans have a desire to give and receive care, where nursing holds the essence of this basic need.

The first element of Watson's theory, clinical caritas processes, is broken down into ten basic points for caring nursing practices. Genuine caring exchanges are possible when the nurse mindfully enacts the following (Summarized from Watson, 2017):
1. Practicing loving-kindness within the context of an intentional caring consciousness.
2. Being fully present in the moment.
3. Cultivating one's own spiritual wellness.
4. Developing and sustaining helping-trusting relationships.
5. Being present to patients in any way they may need.
6. Creatively using all ways of being, knowing, and caring as integral parts of the nursing process.
7. Engaging in genuine teaching-learning experiences that arise from an understanding of interconnectedness.
8. Creating and sustaining a healing environment.
9. Assisting with basic needs and caring for mind-body-spirit.
10. Providing spiritual care for self and client.
These 10 caring caritas are based on the notion that all of life is interconnected.
Other aspects of the theory are: expanded views of the person, caring-healing consciousness, caring consciousness, recognition of the connectedness of all, and advanced caring-healing modalities/ nursing arts.
