Itzamna: is considered the sun god and is the Mayans earliest hero and leader. Legend says that he let a migration from beyond the ocean and through a pathway the would magically open ocean waters. He was also the creator of the universe. He emphasized opposites of world( ex. Light and dark, male-female) He is credited with bringing writing and technology to the Mayans. He is pictured as an old man. He is associated with the moon, medicine, birth, heaven, and underworld. Kukulcan: He was a priest and also a teacher, and considered Mayan kingdom and empire founder. His name means “ feathery serpent”. He was a supreme god, and god of four
elements.
The Enuma Elish’s emphasis is not on the creation of humanity, but rather on the rise of the sun god Marduk, and how he became the supreme god. Marduk was born of Ea, who was born of the bitter water god Tiamat, and was very powerful. He was enlisted to defeat Tiamat and her monsters in a great war, and agreed on the condition that he will forever remain king of the gods. He defeated Tiamat, tore her body in half and used it to create the Earth and the sky. He is also credited with positioning the constellations to represent the gods, and assigning jobs to the gods who fought on the losing side with Tiamat in the war. He then created man to serve the gods in their defined duties, as it was deemed beneath them to perform such duties. The creation of man as a working servant of the gods established a lower role of humans in the Babylonian society than in that of the Mayans, where the people were created to praise the gods, not serve them through hard
The Mayans just have one religion called polytheism. They had multiple gods. The ultimate god that they believed in is the sun god/ corn god. They thought that the sun/corn god was the most powerful because they thought this god would be the reason why the sun came up everyday so that they could stay alive because they wouldn’t be able to grow their crops without the sun. In return they would sacrifice their own people and sometimes enemies instead of killing them. They also thought that the queen and king of the mayans would
The Mayans lived in Southern Mexico and Central America in their capital, Tikal, which is in present day Guatemala. The Mayans were known for their engineering, one structure they were famous for is their pyramid temple in Tikal (Document 1). This pyramid was the tallest structure in the Americas up until the 20th century and is still standing today. The government must have been strong and well organized in order to carry out such a large task. The Mayan religion had multiple gods and this pyramid was most likely devoted to one or used as a place for sacrifices. Another accomplishment of the Mayans was the creation of their calendar. An extra document that would be useful is one that explains how the calendar was created. The Mayans must have studied astronomy and math to a great length. Similar to the Ancient Egyptians, they wrote with symbols and pictures known as glyphs that were used in the calendar. These glyphs were gods, such as Zotz (Document 2). The use of glyphs is an acknowledgement of a writing system, which is another accomplishment.
Mexican civilization is very much affected due its contact. with France, New Orleans of the USA.”Design, style and gastronomy are expressions that show the vibe of Yucatan, sentiment relevance more than its personal kingdom.”(4).
According to legend, he was a vengeful god whose special power was being able to see and punish all of the evil going on everywhere in the world. Tezcatlipoca is important because of the myth related to him. The Aztecs believed in one high god Ometeotl, the original creator. Tezcatlipoca had a brother Quetzalcoatl, the god of good, knowledge and learning. They were born enemies, which is predictable considering one is the god of good and one is the god of evil.
The people of early Mesoamerica had an abundance of different foods. One main food they had though in the 3 main groups (Aztecs, Olmecs, and Mayans) was maize. Maize is a corn like plant derived from teosinte that was domesticated around seven thousand B.C. to five thousand B.C.. Maize was about seventy percent of the Mesoamerican diet and around twenty one percent was meat . The Olmec’s had corn, beans, squash, and chili peppers (194). Each of their food items went in to a balanced diet of carbs, minerals, and vitamins. According to Concise Thematic Analysis “The Olmec system produced a food surplus that freed members of the community to take on specialized roles” (194) which just goes to show how much was around for them. Mayans ate corn and beans as their most important part of their diets, but also had some small domestic meats such as dog, turkey, duck, and fish. The Mayans also had honey and alcoholic drinks made from a stingless bee. The Aztecs had a good variety of plant foods as well with maize topping the charts of their diet with having other stable foods such as sweet potatoes, tomatoes, beans chilies, squashes (also big in their diet), carrots, etc. They also, had a lot of animals to choose from but they did not
The Maya and Aztec civilizations were both indigenous people that flourished in Mesoamerica during different periods of time. Maya 's classic period is dated from 250 to 900 AD, which was considered to be the peak of their civilization. They covered much of the Yucatan Peninsula and were centered in what is now known as Guatemala. The Aztecs dominated from 1325 AD to 1521 AD, in what is now modern day Mexico. Although they shared cultural similarities such as their social structure, they also had their differences in military and religious rituals.
The Olmec, Mayan, and the Aztec Indians were very advanced civilizations for the 14th, 15th, and 16th century. They would used different kinds of resources found around them to create the technology they used to survive. For example the Olmec and the Mayans used cotton to create all kinds of garments, the Mayans also created a number system and their weapons and armor to go to war, the Aztecs adopted an education on how to hunt, how to fight, jewel cutting, metal polishing, song composition, science of the heavens, planing trees and flowers, cooking, cleaning, and many other things. Many cultures were influenced by these three civilizations as they had spread across the world and still use many of their techniques in our everyday lives.
Many civilizations have similar qualities as other civilizations, but they also have their differences. Some of these differences include: Religion, Geography, and Government. These three things were a big part of any civilization. Two civilizations had many different things and many similar things. These civilizations are The Maya and The Romans. The Romans had a very unique and interesting culture, The Maya were also very interesting and different. Even though they were unique in their own way, they also had many similar qualities.
The entirety of Maya culture was based on the experience and knowledge accumulated by their ancestors. They were passive, modest, religious people who believed in the cyclical nature of their reality, events and phenomena (Bower 1986). The Maya can be deeply understood due to their elaborate calendar, numerical system, logographic glyphs, and detailed recording of dates and events on various media. Maya glyphs are known for depicting place names, political events and religious beliefs (Coe and Houston 2015). The cyclical pattern of birth, death and rebirth is associated with the underworld, Xibalba, whose inhabitants represent cause of death like disease, sacrifice, war, and games of defeat (Bassie 2002, Wilson 2006).
When Spaniards first set foot on Mesoamerican shores in the early sixteenth century, they encountered not the godless mass of natives they believed they found, but a people whose rich spiritual traditions shaped and sustained them for thousands of years. These diverse spiritual practices legitimized nearly every aspect of Mesoamerican daily life, from science and architecture to art and politics (Carmack 295), in many of the same ways Catholicism did in Spain. The collision of these cultures in the Great Encounter and the resulting Spanish colonial state mixed not solely two different peoples—Indian and Spanish—but thousands of variants: elites and slaves, peasant farmers and traders, priests and traders, organized and local spiritual customs, all with different degrees of diversity in their respective religious practices. This diversity set the stage for the syncretic religious traditions that emerged in Mayan society and remain a vital part of that culture today.

Klobuchar explains how the Mayans were driven by their beliefs and known to offer sacrifices to their gods (13). Most of these sacrifices were animals, but occasionally they would carry out human sacrifices (Klobuchar 13). The human sacrifices were looked upon as the ultimate sacrifice and often took place on top of pyramids. Human sacrifices varied from criminals to orphans (Sharer "Social Stratification in Maya Culture”). Sacrifices weren’t the only tribute to the Mayan gods as they constructed many architectural wonders. These consisted of stone pyramids, temples, and palaces (Ramirez, Stearns, and Wineburg
The following paper is made for the purpose of publicizing an issue as important and historic as it is "Maya Architecture",the characteristics of the Mayan architecture. Mayan architectural elements, ceremonial platforms, pyramids, Temple, cresting, Orientation, Maya Vault, Stele, Glyph, Urban Design, Building Materials, Construction Process, Regional Architectural Styles. The Mayan architecture is the richest in the New World, because of the complexity and variety of means of expression. Structures gigantic limestone stucco covered were his hallmark.
Mayan pyramids were much more a place for ritual and sacrificial offerings to ancestors and used often throughout the daily spiritual life of their people. The bas-relief sculpture found in Pacal’s tomb reveals information about the Maya concept of rebirth. Playing a large role between the world of the dead below and the heavens above. He is central to keeping order in the universe, while on earth, only himself has the power of gods and in partnership with the pantheon can the cycle of creation
