When asked to consider the term ecology I have to look at what that word is defined as being. The dictionary defines it as, “The branch of biology that deals with the relations of organisms to one another and to their physical surroundings” (online dictionary, 2013). This is a very short definition for something that is comprised of so much once you start thinking about how many things affect an organisms physical surroundings. For this, I will be focusing on energy and chemical cycles, community structure, biodiversity and succession, and how all of these items are a part of ecology.
How does energy play a part in ecology? Everything that we do requires using energy; therefore, there must be a continuous cycle of energy to ensure that functions can continue. When we categorize how things fit in this cycle, we use trophic levels to fit everything together. The first trophic is comprised of organisms that make use of solar energy by means of photosynthesis. Herbivores comprise the second trophic level, using the plants for their energy. Predators make up the third trophic level, gaining energy by eating the herbivores; higher trophic levels are possible if there are higher-level predators in the local ecosystem. Land based ecosystems are usually limited to around five trophic levels, whereas marine ecosystems the number is around seven. Trophic levels are not a one size fits all type of deal, some species can be categorized in many trophic levels, such as humans who are omnivores could comprise several trophic levels. The transfer of energy between these trophic levels is not very efficient, somewhere around 10 percent, which makes decomposers an important element in the energy flow process. Decomposers, recycling org...

...ed through many processes by different bacteria in order to make it into nitrate form, which is necessary for plant life. The importance of communities within an environment where species are not directly competing each other but have their own niche in order to create a well-balanced ecosystem. The process of succession where if the process is not interfered with it will result in greater diversity and a well-rounded ecosystem, and where succession goes wrong due to invasive species, and what was carefully crafted through the gradual process of divergence comes crashing down in a few careless moments. All of these things are amazing in how it affects, and changes things, and how it has crafted life into what we have today. These different cycles of ecology are definitely very powerful driving forces for the cycle of life in this world, yet easily tampered with.
Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to investigate the various components of different ecosystems in a smaller representation and study the conditions required for the ecosystem’s sustainability as well as the connections between

In some way, shape, or form energy is one of the several reasons why there is an existence of life on earth. Cellular respiration and Photosynthesis form a cycle of that energy and matter to support the daily functions that allow organisms to live. Photosynthesis is often seen to be one of the most important life processes on Earth. Photosynthesis is a process by which plants use the energy of sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose so other organisms can use it as food and energy. It changes light energy into chemical energy and releases oxygen. This way organisms can stay alive and have the energy to function. Chlorophyll is an organelle generally found in plants, it generates oxygen as a result too. As you can see without
In the marine ecosystem the energy from the sunlight powers photosynthesis and photosynthetic creatures like algae, seaweeds, green plants, and multiple sorts of bacteria. These photosynthetic organisms are the start of our food chain. These organisms are primary producers, which allow the ecosystem to grow. One negativity to primary production would be climate change. Climate change influences the physical and chemical marine environment, which affects the food web, and it hurts the production of primary
Ecological theory is environmentally based; it is based on everyone and everything that is in a child’s life. This includes parents, teachers, babysitters, neighbors and even other
Humans interact with the ecosystem in every way imaginable. We humans have a huge impact on the Earth’s biodiversity, whether it’s positively or negatively.
The main biotic factors are the plants, fish, and microorganisms. The plants are the main component of an aquaponic system, and they play a significant role in forming a symbiotic ecosystem, the plants also provide water full of nutrients for the fish. Additionally, the fish play a role in forming the ecosystem, but they also assist in the growth of the of the plants by allowing for clean water to be produced from their waste. The bacteria allow for the nitrification cycle to take place, in turn, cleaning the water in the

People have been relying for their daily needs and well-being on nature. The natural ecosystem provides varieties of goods and services to us, for instance, fresh water, fisheries, timber, water purification etc. The benefits that people directly get from the natural systems are called ecosystem services (ES).
The types of energy can assist in proving the importance of energy in general. First, potential energy is useful because everything has dormant energy in their composition or energy gained from increase in vertical distance. This allows for structural supports added for increase in distance and chemical reactions that allow for oxygen, water and other basic necessities. Next, kinetic energy is energy to allow for motion. To walk, run, drive, move, etc. this requires kinetic energy. In addition, thermal energy is a form of kinetic energy which is measured in temperature. This is useful to identify and react to heat and cold temperatures and manipulate each of these to assist us. Electricity, the force of electric charge can assist humankind because of its ability to power lightbulbs and technology. Technology is a source of entertainment, social interaction and information. Lightbulbs allows us to illuminate the region we are in. Lastly, gravitational energy is force between to two objects with a distance exerted from each object. This can be used to assist with hydroelectricity and gravity. Hydroelectricity come from waterfalls that use the gravity to power the energy transferred to electricity. Gravity being exerted constantly, we can use this to allow for many different activities like acceleration due to gravity or gravity allow us to stay on earth and not float away. To conclude, energy makes up our entire universe and the way we use this energy is important because could there ever be a point in time where we run out of
Scientists have begun to say that we have to do more to protect our ecosystem, because our very existence is depending upon it. When the ecosystem is not functioning properly the continuation of plant, animal and human life ecosystems would be impossible. Life cycles can not function without ecosystems. The ecosystem provides us with clean air, water, habitats for fish and other services. They also aid in the mod...
Ecosystem is best defined in the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) (2005) Ecosystems and Human Well-Being: Synthesis. Island Press, Washington page 40 as the collection of interrelated things that work or reside within in one area and that carry immediate impact in changes of one to another, within the environment as a whole. Moreover it goes on to add that Ecosystem services as benefits people obtain from ecosystems and distinguishes four categories of ecosystem services. What are services? These are the benefits that are provided by the ecosystems in the way of making the provision of good. For example, the service of regulation of air is followed by the provision of oxygen by the ecosystem. A specific example being that of forest ecosystems,
Ecopsychology is a field of study involving the study of how the environmental factors (both physical and biological) interact with the physiology of the surrounding living organisms. This includes the effects of weather, climate, and nutrients on the biological processes in both animals and plants. This interrelationship is necessary for the formation of a complete ecosystem. Plants are modified by external (environmental factors). Ecopsychology is concerned on how plants respond to environmental changes such as drought or cold.
The branch of science that deals with how living things, including humans, are related to their surroundings is called ecology . The Earth supports some 5 million species of plants, animals, and microorganisms. These interact and influence their surroundings, forming a vast network of interrelated environmental systems called ecosystems. The arctic tundra is an ecosystem and so is a Brazilian rain forest. The islands of Hawaii are a relatively isolated ecosystem. If left undisturbed, natural environmental systems tend to achieve balance or stability among the various species of plants and animals. Complex ecosystems are able to compensate for changes caused by weather or intrusions from migrating animals and are therefore usually said to be more stable than simple ecosystems. A field of corn has only one dominant species, the corn plant, and is a very simple ecosystem. It is easily destroyed by drought, insects, disease, or overuse. A forest may remain relatively unchanged by weather that would destroy a nearby field of corn, because the forest is characterized by greater diversity of plants and animals. Its complexity gives it stability.
