Are violent crimes towards women becoming a social norm for America? The answer is yes, violent crimes such as rape and murder are all becoming “just another story” for many Americans. From Isobel Parker, a twenty-three year old woman who was murdered by her boyfriend in Tennessee, to Dru Sjodin, a twenty-two year old college student, who was murdered by a man in North Dakota, all the way to these stories are no longer shocking to many Americans simply because they hear about stories similar to this on a daily basis. So why has America stopped viewing these vicious and violent crimes as serious as they actually are? Could it be because they come about so frequently? The motive of her kidnapper, rapist, and murdered, pleasure. Sjodin was a graduate of Pequot Lakes high school, attending the University of North Dakota. At around four o’clock on November 22, 2003, Sjodin had just finished her shift at Victoria Secret, and was walking to her car and talking to her boyfriend Christopher Lang on the phone, when she said “okay, okay” and the call dropped. On April 17, 2004, just west of Crookston Minnesota Sjodins’ body was discovered in a revine. When she was found, her hands were tied behind her back and she had been beaten, stabbed, sexually assaulted, and had several lacerations. The largest laceration was a five-and-a-half inch cut on her neck, parallel to the rope that was also tied around her neck and remnants of a shopping bag were found under the rope, suggesting that a bag had been placed on her head. Alfonso Rodriguez Jr., kidnapped, raped, and murdered Dru Katrina Sjodin, all for pleasure. He was convicted on September 22, 2006, yet still to this day, he denies any participation in the Sjodin
