The Great Gatsby is a novel that has captivated the minds of many. One question still remains. Is Gatsby really great? The Great Gatsby is a novel that goes through the memories of the narrator, Nick Carraway, and his experience with a man named Jay Gatsby. Gatsby is in a sense the embodiment of the “American Dream” as he worked his way up from the bottom to the top all to get the girl of his dreams. Gatsby has his weak points but his strong points that led to his riches and achieving the all important “American Dream” outweigh them. His mark is forever left on the lives of those in the novel and his name remains known in the real world as well. The great American novel The Great Gatsby has become an icon to the American dream because of one fictional man who achieved it. While there are countless definitions of the word “great,” most can be seen in Gatsby. Though the author F. Scott Fitzgerald never liked the name of his famous novel, The Great Gatsby stays true. Gatsby is great.

One definition of the word “great” is someone who is of high rank or social class. Of course this is seen in Gatsby. His name was heard around every corner, his parties caught the attention of many, and his charm captivated the heart of girl named Daisy. Most of the attendees at Gatsby’s wild summer partied arrived without an invitation simply because Gatsby liked people and did not mind the extra company. His money could feed them all. At the first party Nick attends he comes across a strange man in Gatsby’s library marveling at the books Gatsby was able to buy. “‘See!’ He cried triumphantly. ‘It’s a bona-fide piece of printed matter. It fooled me. This fella’s a regular Belasco. It’s a triumph. What thoroughness! What realism! Knew when to stop, too...

Gatsby landed himself the fitting description of someone who is truly great. The Great Gatsby captures the true impact of the American dream through Gatsby himself. Because of Gatsby’s hard work towards his dreams, he has become a symbol of dreams and determination for American’ everywhere. Every American tries to obtain their ultimate dream but it is rare they succeed. This is what sets Gatsby aside from the crowd. Setting aside Gatsby’s lack of a moral center, it is his abilities to dream and achieve that ultimately makes him great.
