Is Space Exploration Worthwhile? Rachel was sitting in her bedroom feverish as the countdown for the rocket launch began. The second the rocket was launched, the orbital caught fire, and killed everyone inside. Space exploration is not worthwhile. First, space exploration is just too expensive. An example of the this in “The Space Race is a Pointless Waste of Money”, when it’s stated that “a $278 million package was blasted off from Vandenberg air force base then promptly crashed into the pacific.” To illustrate, it was explained that the satellite would have advanced the study of global warming, but instead sent hundreds of millions of dollars swirling down the drain. This is shown again in “Is Space Exploration Worth the Cost?”, when the author explains that just in “2007, NASA had a budget of $16.3 billion”. To clarify, $16.3 billion is and forever will be a lot of money, even if it is just a fraction of the total G.D.P. The loads of money being put towards space exploration needs to come to a cessation; however, there’s no sign of this happening soon. Second, the goal to colonise …show more content…
other planets is completely unreasonable. This is demonstrated in “The Space Race is a Pointless Waste of Money”, when it’s stated that “a spaceship capable of traveling at a million miles per hour (20 times faster than Apollo) would take over 4,000 years to reach the nearest star system that might just theoretically be hospitable.” To clarify, Stephen Hawking's view on the colonization of other planets was being discussed, and the author immediately shut down Hawking’s viewpoint. We know that Earth is indeed ill-fated, but where else might we travel to? As“Is Space Exploration Worth the Cost?” states, “What’s the hurry? Mars isn’t going anywhere.” In like manner, why are we even trying to find other habitable planets when we haven’t even attempted to save Earth? Are countries too afraid of the drudgery to actually commit to solving Earth’s problems? Last, Earth has many issues that need to attempted to be solved before space exploration gets anymore funding. Why does America have no disregard for hapless countries? This is shown in the article “The Space Race is a Pointless Waste of Money”, when it’s said that “Every rocket fire signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed.” To illustrate, those words were spoken by Eisenhower, who once reprimanded and veteod Apollo. Another example of this is in the same article, “The Space Race is a Pointless Waste of Money”, when it’s discussed that an ego trip to the moon is ridiculous when “terrestrial frontiers such as disease, starvation, and drought cry out for cash.” To elaborate, whenever money is tossed over to NASA for unnecessary missions and studies, Earth is blatantly ignored. Some people think that we should commit hard-pressed budgets for space exploration to continue our leadership in scientific and technological discoveries; however, they are wrong.
This is demonstrated in “The Space Race is a Pointless Waste of Money” when it’s stated that “Bush’s project, priced at $400 billion, was inspired by his desire to stay ahead of the Chinese in the new space race.” Furthermore, Bush just wanted to avoid the pity of not being first. Another example of this is in “Is space exploration worth the cost?”, when it’s said that America needs “to keep the flame of manned space exploration alive as China, Russia, india, and other countries forge ahead with substantial investments that challenge U.S. leadership in space.” To elaborate, American funds NASA just because it’s insecure. Who cares if another country gets ahead of us in space
exploration? It made Rachel feel sorrowful that space exploration is still carried out. She doesn’t understand why Earth is neglected while space exploration is praised by budgets. Space exploration is not advantageous to the world.
NASA Funding The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was booming in the late 1960s because the U.S. invested over 4.5 percent of the Federal Budget (Bolden). Unfortunately, in the recent years, the Government has slashed funding for many of NASA’s projects in an attempt to cut back on the deficit and boost the economy. Despite the plummet in NASA's budget, the program has proved that it's prominence in the U.S., space programs like NASA continue to face difficulty in increasing its funds. Although, NASA leads evidently, the government doesn’t think NASA is worth more than 0.47 percent of the federal budget.
Space exploration needs advancing scientific research, more machineries and equipments which means that it would cost us a lot of
Have you ever wondered what Earth was like without space exploration? In the story Leaving Main Street the author states, “The United States has more important things to spend money on.” On the other hand some people believe that successful space programs adds to our economy, national prestige, create jobs, and improves national security. We shouldn't spend valuable resources on space exploration, because we could end hunger and poverty.
In 2013 spending on NASA will be at the lowest point in the last four years because the United States government is in extreme debt. Many feel that this will lead to a halt on all space exploration and technological advancements in the world of Astronomy. In my opinion I feel that this lack of funding for NASA will thoroughly hinder progress for future generations as well as our own.
The Space Race began in or around the late-1950s, during the Cold War. The United States and Russia were both anxious to become the country to explore space. Unfortunately for the US, Russia launched the first artificial satellite and man-made object to orbit Earth, Sputnik. The launch of Sputnik surprised the United States, and we rushed to get our own space craft into space, and to beat Russia to anything else space related.
When one thinks about the space race one’s mind automatically envisions connotations of the cold war; the Soviet Union battling against the USA for technological supremacy in spaceflight capabilities. This was not only a strategic race for national defence reasons but was also seen to be a pivotal stand point of national superiority. This is also the main basis of the majority of space law still in force today. But the reality is there is a space race occurring right now in the present day, not for national supremacy but instead for commercial supremacy no longer is there a search for strategic advantage it is now a race for profit gain.
As a country we need to start investing more money and research into space technology. Programs currently exist for this effort, but the potential for research and progress is limited by a lack of funding; compared to other government funded programs, aerospace funding is pitiful. Continued research in space technology is a necessary step in our growth and development not just as a country but also as entire human race. If we are to achieve this goal, it is necessary to increase funding for space research and technology and consider the possibility of colonizing outer space. If we limit our existence to the planet Earth, and continue to drain the resources on this planet, we will destroy the only home we have.
When talking about the current space program, Neil Degrasse Tyson once said, “I got angry with America, because advancing is not just something you do incrementally. You need innovation as well, so that your advances are revolutionary, not merely evolutionary” (Tyson 3). America used to have the top space program in the world. Being first to the moon excited the country and gave everyone a sense of pride and fulfillment. Lately, though, we have been falling behind in space exploration. A successful space program is needed in America, and here’s why: we are losing our grip on the title as the world superpower and a new age of economics and politics is coming faster than we are prepared for. To be prepared for this new age we need the funds,
The main argument against space travel is that the money used could be better put on other matters. This is, in fact, very untrue. Looking at NASA’s 2015 budget of $17.5 billion, it may seem like a lot, until you realize that the US military budget for 2014 was $581 billion (5). Furthermore, it was estimated that each dollar in NASA’s budget was equivalent to 8 – 10 dollars of economic benefit (6). If an organization can bring about economic value at 10 folds the original budget, it would be logical to continue funding it, if not increasing the funds.
In America, space travel is a controversial issue that many discuss. Although exciting, some people find it unnecessary and a waste of money. There are also many risks associated with space travel and many issues are more important than space travel that should be focused on. There are ethical, diplomatic, and economic issues that need to be considered before making decisions about space exploration.
The 1960's brought new advancements for all of Earth. Machines and men were sent into space, and this sparked a new government agency, called NASA. Space was a new frontier, and virtually everyone was interested in exploring it. Over the years, the interest in space exploration has weakened, and NASA was almost terminated from existence, although there have been many advancements in it over that time. Space exploration should continue because it could help solve many problems on Earth, such as overpopulation and lack of resources. Exploration of the final frontier must continue in order for human life to continue.
Most people think that the costly downside to funding space exploration is a reason to avoid spending money on sciences and instead spend it on problems here on earth, but such funding for space exploration actually promotes economical as well as scientific benefits. Space exploration is an important expenditure for the high cost because of the potential for numerous benefits such as the possibility to find useful resources to cultivate, space exploration and satellites produce many thousands of jobs in our economy, and it creates and discovers newer and better technologies through research and development.
A serious disease might lead people to the death, natural disasters possibly will occur, or end of earth might come without any warning and take innocent people’s lives away. Regardless of this fact, there are still many people arguing that the space exploration is waste of money. Actually, the amount of money on the national budget always looks huge, but it is not really huge compared to other areas that the money was used. Furthermore, I believe that investing money on space exploration is same as people buying insurance. If space exploration succeeds, humans will doubtless find a new planet to live on and become safe, and investing money on space exploration will just turn out to be the preparation for unclear future. In many cases, people should think about the whole first, but not the individuals, in order to benefit everyone in the society. If they use most of the money to help the poor people, but not use any money to prepare for future, people would suffer from the devastation at the end. For this reason, humans must use money on space exploration. Space exploration definitely will become the permanent aid and benefit the
“Sheltered as we are by Earth's atmosphere and magnetic field, which deflect lethal radiation from space, we are like coddled children who have never ventured into a tough neighborhood” (Folger 2). Humans have been fascinated with space since the beginning of our time. Just like children and rough neighborhoods, we have tackled obstacle over obstacle to make it home again. In the end, we have a better knowledge and strength than before. The future of space exploration can assist us in answering the everlasting question of how the universe came to be. The more we explore the infinite galaxies, the more we can scientifically discover and create new technologies as science advances. As we continue to discover, we can create new fields and occupations for aspiring young students like myself.
Space has always been a pivotal and utmost important subject for many years. In the past, scientists have made monumental advances in this field such as sending people into orbit and landing a man on the moon. Of course, this has only barely been explored and we still have a lot more to see of the ever-vast outer space. One of the most significant topics of all of science has only been touched and there’s still more to come.
