Whenever we say or write something that will be put out in the public, we need to filter our words. If we don’t edit ourselves, we risk being scrutinized for not being politically correct. But, by censoring ourselves, we are taking away our freedom of speech. Being politically correct is necessary in many situations, but when it starts taking away our first amendment rights is when it becomes a problem. There are multiple instances when it is necessary to be politically correct. Currently, candidates are campaigning for the presidency and are trying to win voters. To get elected, the candidates should be politically correct at all times to not offend voters. Donald Trump should really take this example and apply it to his campaign. We should be mindful of our words when talking to strangers to not offend them before you know them. We have to take so much caution in what we say because of this, that when we say something, it’s not even in our words. It is important to be tolerant of others, but it should not start to take away our freedom of speech. When my words are criticized, I never intended to offend anyone. When I do try to be politically correct, I take so much time in trying to make it sound as inoffensive as possible, I usually just delete or erase what I was going to say. If the way that people take offense to any type of words and phrases continue, our first amendment right won’t exist anymore. There are many times when you should censor your words to be tolerant of others, but there are also times when censoring has taken away our first amendment. When people start trying to ban things because they take offense to it is when it has gone too far. It is important to censor yourself, but it is equally important to be able to say what you
