There are many factors concealed carry is good for Illinois. Too many innocent people are getting robbed; People should be allowed to defend their self from any danger. Before the law was passed, a person was only allowed to carry in their home. Even if a person legally owned a firearm, if they were caught outside of their home carrying a firearm they could face jail time. Locking a firearm in a case, unloaded, taken apart, and placing the case in the trunk of a car was the only way a person was allowed to transport a firearm. Not everyone can obtain a concealed carry license, it is not as easy as people think. The State of Illinois doesn't just hand them out like candy. First a person must posses a F.O.I.D. card. A person is disqualified from getting one if they have a felony conviction; ever been convicted of domestic battery, or domestic violence; or if a person is subject to an Order of Protection. If a person does have a F.O.I.D. card they must now take a 16 hour firearm training class and pass the test. I think people should have at least 40 hours of firearm training. If a robber knows a person is carrying a gun, would a robber would try the rob that person? Before a thief wants to strip someone of their valuables they have to think twice. No one knows who can be carrying a firearm now; grandma going to the store; mom or dad going to work; brother going to the game. I believe less armed robberies will take place now. In addition gangs in Chicago are a tough problem right now. People might think just because they are not part of a gang, they don't have to worry about being shot at by them. Wearing a hat tilted to the wrong side in certain neighborhoods can get a gangs attention. The gang would approach a pe... ... middle of paper ... ... in. I grabbed my shotgun, opened the door and told them "there's nothing here worth dying for", they then apologized and ran away. I don't know what would of happened if I didn't have a firearm, but I can say refuse to be a victim. In conclusion I hope I could reach out to more people who are against firearms. Maybe more people would change their mind if the problems get closer to their home. With all the violence going on in Chicago some even on the block I live on. We need to be able to protect our selfs. I will not run and hide or move away because the gun violence. Guns don't hurt people, as pencils don't make mistakes, it takes a person to make the move. I have convinced my girlfriend that concealed carry is not only good for Illinois, but great for our family. Now I hope I could change other peoples minds or at least loosen their hatred towards guns.
Many Americans are now applying for a license to carry licensed concealed arms with them. The rate at which licenses are being approved is worrying. This development is concerning law enforcement authorities. Putting so many firearms at the disposal of the public is counterproductive to the gains that are being made on improving security and especially in the cities where incidences of gun crime and violence are on the rise.
First off, United States citizens were given the right to bear arms in the 2nd amendment of the Constitution, so many people buy firearms. For example, 40% of all US homes have at least one gun. The United States Constitution states, “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” Although it is a given right, the 2nd amendment is also just a reminder to the government not to take this right away from citizens. Additionally, Wisconsin has a state preemption law that says that cities can not pass firearm ordinances that are more strict that the state laws. They can enforce a sal...
They are afraid the wrong type of people will legally own a gun, and then commit a crime, and it happens. “In 2007 the South Florida Sun-Sentinelreviewed a list of concealed gun permit holders in Florida and found that 1,400 had pleaded guilty or no contest to a felony, 216 had outstanding warrants, and 128 had active domestic violence injunctions” (“Right to Carry a Concealed Handgun” 4). It is a good statistic of how the wrong people can still obtain legal guns. However, that was back in 2007. Illinois is the last state to approve the Conceal and Carry act. The benefit of that is Illinois has witnessed all other states and their gives and takes on this law; this has helped create Illinois own Concealed Carry Law. Observing all other states, Illinois has created a careful application in order to obtain your concealed carry license (“CCL).In the Illinois Bar Journal, Caitlyn G. McEvoyl explains the rights and restrictions of the Conceal and Carry Law. The first step is to obtain a FOID card, which is the id to legally buy a firearm. It is harder to receive a FOID card than it is to apply for the CCL. Such restrictions like mentally or physically impaired, addicted to narcotics, or mentally ill can discontinue your application. Afterwards one must have sixteen hours of training with an approved instructor; this involves: caring and safety of a
Law abiding citizens should have the right to protect themselves against criminals. You are less likely to suffer an injury when attacked if you are carrying a handgun, as opposed to other methods of self-protection. The right to carry a concealed handgun is protected by the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The U.S. Constitution states “the right of the people to bear arms shall not be infringed” (ProCon.org 1).Carrying a handgun could keep a lot of people from being killed during a public shooting incident. Concealed handguns protect citizens from violent crimes such as burglary and robbery. Most criminals are armed and you don’t have much of a chance of survival if you are not carrying a
Everyone has had that time in their life where they feel that they would be safer if they had some sort of protection, concealed carry is a great option for protection. Over the years it has been growing in popularity, more and more people are going out and getting their concealed carry permit. With more and more people going out and getting their permit, some may view it as dangerous, while others feel it is a necessity. Concealed carry is essential because, it allows added protection, has certain restrictions that the person must meet, and if guns are handled properly they are not as dangerous
Gang involvement has been quite higher than past years. The 2008 National Youth Gang Survey estimates that about 32.4 percent of all cities, suburban areas, towns, and rural counties had a gang problem (Egley et al., 2010). This represented a 15 percent increase from the year 2002. The total number of gangs has also increased by 28 percent and total gang members have increased by 6 percent (Egley et al., 2010). This shows how relevant gang related activity is in today’s society. More locations are beginning to experience gang activity for the first time. Gang crime has also been on the rise in the past...
During the problem definition stage, one must realize that “a condition is not a social problem unless it is seen as violating certain fundamental values and beliefs about how society should operate” (Gusfield, 2011). I have determined that there exists a problem concerning gun control, more specifically, concealed carry laws, as they are inconsistent throughout the states. While 48 states now have some form of concealed carry policy in place, the Illinois does not. Thus, the citizens’ rights are in violation of the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
In fact, five states, California, Florida, Illinois, New York, and South Carolina think that is better to keep conceal carry over open carry. Concealed carry is different then that of open carry. Both laws let a person carry a handgun out in public around other people, but with concealed carry the user must hide the handgun underneath some form of clothing making it invisible to others. It could be placed in a multiple of places underneath a coat, vest, at the lower back, hip, leg, or on one side of the rib cage. Open carry only lets you carry the firearm on the side of your hip. Also, each person must get a license or permit showing the proper use of the firearm and pass a background check. This lets only people who are not hostile with experience of a firearm the right to carry in public. Making sure that not only is the user safe from the firearm, it makes sure that citizens around them are not in

Mayor, Jane Byrne, was able to push through the ban for firearms in 1992, but it only lasted until 2010 when the Supreme Court shut it down (Chicago Tribune). Later in 2013 the general assembly passed a law that granted residents the right to concealed carry (Chicago Tribune). The Chicago Tribune stated that “Right now (as of this year), New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco have stricter gun laws on the books, than Chicago”. Even though they were trying to make it strict and hard to get guns, the black market is used to get illegal guns and there are many other loopholes through these laws. Most of the guns that are in Chicago are purchased in neighboring states or southern states with more relaxed gun laws (Chicago Tribune). These are then sold on the streets in Chicago for a premium
This is caused because the more guns there, are the less violence there is. Dangerous criminals will think twice about robbing someone that has a gun. A victim with a gun is no longer a victim because they can not fight back against the attacker. Therefore, they can save their lives and save lives of the public which need help at that moment. Lott states, “The estimated annual gain from 1992 from allowing concealed handguns was over $5.74 billion” (House Report). This states that when a decline in violence goes down the amount of money goes up. Concealed guns can only benefit everyone in multiple ways. Concealed weapons can help create the feeling of safety and reduce violence. No one wants to live in
When the United States Constitution adopted the Second Amendment as a part of the Bill of Rights it was to recognize citizens the right to keep and bear arms. This Second Amendment is the reason why strong gun advocates are afraid to have any gun policy put in this state. The people that have their guns believe that the government is going to be corrupted and the people have to overturn it. But, they live in a fairytale if they really thinking that they are going to beat a army like the United States. They are afraid that the local government will take away their guns. This policy that I will explain to you won't do none of these options, but instead help the state lower the crime rates that involve guns and keep law enforcement well know to people that have guns in their possession. We are trying to go after the illegal owners of firearms instead to outstanding citizen that owns gun trying to protect his family from an home invasion, protecting his herd from wolves so the farmer won't lose more money , or just having a good time hunting with his friends and family.
Citizens want to conceal carry a handgun because every day there are dangerous individuals who prey on the weak. In addition to that, concealed handguns are an effective non-lethal form of self defense the majority of the time. Gary Kleck from the Federal Bureau of Investigation “estimated that, 2 million to 2.5 million victims annually use handguns to repel criminal attackers” (Kates). The surprise of being armed is the advantage for the victim, which the victim has the disadvantage of knowing the time and place of being attacked. Concealed carry actually provides protection to citizens that do not carry because the criminals are not sure who is able to defend themselves....
Should guns be carried around by everyone? Maybe they should. I am not sure if I am with legalizing guns, but if I look at the situation in Chicago, it might be different. Chicago especially the west side is very dangerous and to be around that neighborhood has its risks. If you do need a gun to defend yourself, it’s less likely for you to get threatened. Not saying that you should kill people because you shouldn’t harm anyone, but to make sure that you are safe. Sometimes all you need is to show that you have the ability to defend yourself and other will leave you alone. The education and poverty seem like the biggest problem that leads to gun violence. I would let people in Chicago get a gun, but only for protection and improve the education and use TIF money to help people get out of poverty.
As stated by John Lott and David Mustard, “When state concealed handgun laws went into effect in a county, murders fell by 7.65 percent, and rapes and aggravated assaults fell by 5 and 7 percent”(Lott 19). This goes to show how when a law-abiding citizen is in possession of a concealed firearm they can prevent crimes from occurring as often. Also in many cases they don’t even have to use the firearm, just by having possession of the weapon many people will be scared off from committing their crime and no one will get injured in the outcome. However opposition to concealed carry would say that its too easy for criminals to get concealed carry permits but there are actually multiple rules that prevent permits from falling into the wrong hand. As summarized by Robert McCulloch there are laws in place that prevent people from getting a permit like not having felonies and not being in a mental hospital for the five preceding years(McCulloch 1).
