INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this essay is to investigate and find
out what causes food poisoning, the bacteria’s that causes, the
symptoms, the infections and its prevention’s.
Food poisoning is commonly found in UK. Generally food poisoning
result from contamination of food and the subsequent growth of food
poisoning micro-organise. Food poisoning outbreaks ore often
recognised by the sudden onset of illness within a short period of
time among many individuals who have eaten or drunk one or more foods

The most serious types of food poisoning are due to bacteria. Bacteria
are microscopic organisms that are found everywhere, which is in the
air, soil, water, plant, animals and human body. A variety of bacteria
may cause food poisoning, however some are more common than other in

Diseases: The most common health concern associated with S. aureus is food poisoning caused by the release of enterotoxins, even in small doses, into food. Release of less than 1 microgram of toxin is sufficient to contaminate food enough to illicit symptoms of food poisoning. The infective dose of toxin is generally present when food is contaminated with an excess of 100,000 bacteria per gram of food. The intensity and variety of symptoms resulting from S. aureus food poisoning differ from individual to individual, but some of the most common symptoms are nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, and prostration (complete physical or mental exhaustion). It usually takes 2 or 3 days to recover from S. aureus food poisoning, but in some instances individuals will require more time to fully recover.
Common Factors Contributing to Food Poisoning Food poisoning can be defined as: “An acute (arising suddenly and of short duration) gastroenteritis. caused by the ingestion of food.” – www.food.gov.uk. Food poisoning is characterized by the following symptoms.

The government food agencies such as The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), do not do enough to ensure our safety from food. Our standards of ensuring food safety have dramatically dropped due to government food agencies not doing enough to protect us and making new rules and regulations to hard for food producers.
Salmonella is one of the most common causes of food poisoning. It is a gram-negative, aerobic (oxygen requiring), rod-shaped bacterium that can infect humans, birds, reptiles, and other animals. It results in the swelling of the lining of the stomach and intestines. Salmonella food poisoning occurs worldwide, however it is most frequently reported in North America and Europe. In the United States, Salmonella is responsible for about 15% of all cases of food poisoning (Salmonella food poisoning).
Food hazards can be generally defined as a state or pollutant that may have the potential to cause disease. The issues of food hazards have become widely recognized internationally in the last decade. With modern technology, scientists have been able to identify foodborne diseases prompted by food hazards on a global scale and have acknowledged these hazards as a primary cause of morbidity (Friis, 2012). I chose to focus on food hazards, their significance, and their effect on a global scale because this is an issue that most people have, at some point, encountered throughout life. In my own life, I’ve experienced mild illness as a result of food that had been exposed to harmful bacteria, and have known individuals who faced more serious health

Typhoid is a bacterium that has been very devastating to the human race for centuries. Typhoid thrives in undeveloped countries and countries with high populations and poor sanitation procedures. But, it is still a relevant disease here in the United States because of its ease of spread once someone is infected (Pollack, 2003). Antibiotic treatment is usually successful when treating Typhoid Fever, but it still has the ability to cause death, even with treatment of advanced medicine and antibiotics. When one thinks of salmonella, they will most commonly think of a food borne illness (food poisoning symptoms) caused by eating raw or undercooked animal products such as undercooked chicken or pork. That is the effect of some strains of the bacteria, but not the one that causes typhoid fever (Pike, 2014).
What is Foodborne Illness? According to a medical dictionary, foodborne illness is an acute gastrointestinal infection caused by consuming food contaminated with pathogenic, bacteria, toxins, viruses, prions or parasites. Such contamination was caused by improper food handling, preparation or storage of food. Contacts between food and pests, especially flies, cockroaches and rodents are a further cause of contamination of food. Foodborne illness can also be caused by adding pesticides or medicine to food or consuming or by accidentally consuming naturally poisonous substances. That is why foodborne illness can also be called food poisoning.
Food-borne transmission refers to any illness that results due to the consumption of contaminated food, pathogenic bacteria, viruses, or parasites that contaminate food, as well as chemical or natural toxins such as poisonous mushrooms (cdc.gov). Bacteria is the most often the pathogen that causes food-borne illness. This is usually due to improper handling of foods, improper preparation of food and improper food storage. According to the CDC, the top 5 contributing pathogens to food-borne illness are Norovirus, non-typhoidal Salmonella, Clostridium perfringens, Campylobacter spp. and Staphylococcus aureus.
