Introduction to Slater's

Slaters was founded in 1918, and since then, the name Slaters has

become virtually synonymous with that of the town itself.

In 1912, a single site car repair and paintshop business was opened on

what was then the main road between Chester and Anglesey. Subsequently

sold to Captain Slater in 1918, this garage is today the site of

Abergele's Kwik Save Supermarket.

In 1923, Harold Knowlson the father of the present Chairman and

grandfather of the current Managing Director took over the running of

Slaters with his partner, the late Mr Harry Budge.

This started a unique association with Abergele that has seen both the

company and town grow and thrive together in a way never more apparent

than today. The family firm has now grown into the town's largest

single employer, with 150 men and women working from eight separate

sites.

Today Slater's reputation for quality, service and customer

satisfaction extends far and wide with customers regularly travelling

to the town from as far afield as Manchester, Liverpool and North-West

England.

customers even in the very early days. Colin Knowlson, Managing

Director, explains:

"Motorists needs were very different in those days - and car

reliability was also very different. In the early days - soon after we

had introduced North Wales' first paint spraying facility - Slaters

was a motorist's landmark because it had the first petrol pump on the

road from Chester and this initiation was followed by a
