Caution: Bad Influence

In Jon Krakauer’s Into The Wild, the important story of Chris McCandless is a caution for all readers.
Chris McCandless took a long journey into the Alaskan interior unprepared, and cautionless. He only carried a few items in his backpack as he ventured out into the unknown. For example, Krakauer writes, “He [Chris] had no axe, no bug dope,no snowshoes, no compass. The only navigational aid in his possession was a tattered state road map he’d scrounged at a gas station” (5). This proves that Chris was very unprepared for his trip and he carried very few possessions with him. The fact that Chris died in the wilderness shows that it was very irresponsible to go into the wilderness unprepared and vulnerable. Chris had to hunt animals to get food in the wild, which was very hard for him to do since he was unprepared. Krakauer writes, “Maggots already! Smoking appears ineffective. Don’t know, looks like a disaster. I [Chris] now wish I had never shot the moose. One of the greatest tragedies of my life” (167). This proves that Chris didn’t know what to do with the moose he had shot. He thought the right thing to do was to smoke the carcass, but he should’ve cut it into strips and laid it out to dry. Chris didn’t have enough knowledge about hunting to be in the wild. People who want to follow in Chris’s path should be aware that Chris was unprepared and impulsive, and they should not make that same mistake.
Chris McCandless’s story, in Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer is an important story to be heard, but it should be read as a cautionary tale for all people wanting to go into the wilderness unprepared.
