Through history, the United States has participated in many significant events, such as the infamous Civil War, World War I and II, and the Cold War. In the same manner, the United States has been in many conflicts with the Middle East. For instance, the Gulf War where, we, the United States, liberated the Saudi Arabian country Kuwait from the dictator Saddam Hussein; however, he is in command of one of the most powerful armies in the globe (Operation). Even though this conflict only lasted for months, America had overcome a milestone. So many military personnel have participated in this conflict and all have different stories as well as perspectives. Whether the veteran was on the front line or working behind the scenes, everyone who contributed in Operation: Desert Storm made it successful. Despite the many deaths in this conflict, the lives that were sacrificed will be remembered forever.
To learn more about this historical event, I interviewed a veteran of Desert Storm and more, the Persian Gulf War, my interviewee, Rob Hernandez. His roles, feelings toward, and frame of mind during this conflict were discussed during the interview. Operation Desert Storm occurred near the end of the Persian Gulf War with Iraq. According to Lt Col Paul D. Berg, Desert Storm was compared to the Spanish American-War when John Jay states that the Spanish American War was a “splendid little war.”
In fact, Rob Hernandez explained that Desert Storm was a brief conflict. In the same manner, Operation Desert Storm was originally called “Desert Shield” when American Troops were originally migrating into Kuwait. Rob Hernandez explained that he was proud to serve in the military and never got tired of serving for his country. The Persian Gulf War and Desert Storm were one of many conflicts that America has won and has promoted peace throughout the world. At the end of this war, there was still divergence between Saddam Hussein’s forces and the United States, which will lead into the future Iraqi war. George H.W Bush’s efforts and command of the military during the Gulf War helped create peace in Kuwait and areas around it. At the end of the interview Rob Hernandez gave information about how life was in the military where a person would have to move from Europe to America and possibly back, and then life working on the different air bases located around the different nations.

Made famous by Theodore Roosevelt’s volunteer Rough Rider’s and the Buffalo Soldiers, the Battle of San Juan Hill (July 1, 1898), also known as The Battle of San Juan Heights, was the bloodiest battle of the Spanish American War. After landing on the beachhead, the US V Corps under the command of Major General William Shafter fought their way west toward the port town of Santiago. After an indecisive clash at Las Guasimas on June 24, Shafter readied his men to take the strategic heights around the city, while Cuban insurgents blocked any Spanish reinforcements arriving on the roads to the north, in what would be one of the most decisive battles of America’s “Splendid Little War.” 1
Mitchell, the son of a wealthy Wisconsin Senator, began his military career at the age of eighteen when he enlisted as a private in the First Wisconsin when the United States declared war on Spain in April, 1898. Due to his father’s high position, “in three weeks Mitchell had accepted a second lieutenant’s commission in a volunteer signal company.” He witnessed the ceremony of Spain’s surrender in Havana, Cuba, an important experience in bringing him to “appreciate America’s new worldwide role.”
The story of Jason Poole as presented by Grady is a clear picture of the ravage of the potentials of soldiers in the face of war, and the wrong priorities of the American government in spending billions of dollars for the war that have no clear advantage for them or the American people, that is worth dying for. The sending of potential young men and women in Iraq to sustain its war lacked the basic objective that warrant their sacrifices, as well as the billions of dollars spend in pursuing such unclear purpose that is wrongly labeled “war on terror.” As per records, American fatalities in Iraq as of January 20 stood at two thousand two hundred twenty five (2, 225), while casualties numbered at 16, 472 (The New York Times, par. 8). Grady cited that medical treatments for brain injuries in Iraq alone would cost fourteen billion dollars.
Clinton made strenuous efforts to avoid being shipped to Vietnam: he received education deferments while at Georgetown University and Oxford University, enrolled, but never joined, the Army ROTC, and, upon learning of his high draft lottery number, revoked his enrollment in the ROTC to entertain a career in politics. The letter written to the director of the ROTC program was leaked prior to the election of 1992. The 1992 election came during the wake of the so-called Gulf War and Operation Desert Storm ordered and successfully carried out during President George H.W. Bush’s administration. The American public, though not supportive at the onset of Desert Storm, came to appreciate Bush’s work in establishing American dominance in a post-Cold War world. Thus, considering the heightened degree of patriotism exhibited by the American people leading up to the election, the rhetorical barrier presented to Bill Clinton came in the form of his need to contest the negativity surrounding his draft-dodging during the Vietnam War. Operation Desert Storm took place between January 16 and February 24, 1991. The operation had four phases: 1) attacks against logistics infrastructure, and military communications systems and government electricity in Iraq; 2) attacks against the Iraq air force in Kuwait territory; 3) attacks targeting the Republican Guard Saddam Hussein, and the rest of enemy weapons; 4) conduct a ground invasion with a Coalition force to expel the invaders from Kuwait (Zarpelão, 2010).

As a result of Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait on August 2nd 1990, Operation Desert shield was implemented by the United States on August 7th. Trying to deter Iraq from advancing farther into the country the U.S. began staging troops, equipment and other supplies needed to sustain a military in war time. Moving resources by air and sea the American armed forces presence was made known in the region with resources being staged in the allied countries of Saudi Arabia These later we mobilized initiating operation Desert Storm on January 17th 1991 at 3am Arabia Time when the first tanks rolled across the Saudi border, this conflict would continue until the official cease fire would take effect on April 11th of the same year (Operation). During the 10 month time span of the Persian Gulf War I, Military Sealift Command had conducted the largest modern sealift operation of war materials of the American military. The ability for the United States to mobilize and sustain during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm displays America’s national security goals of forward power projection, maritime supremacy and the effective planning of their sealift strategy.
I chose the easy route of interview my grandpa (Dean Randel) who served in World War II as flight deck operator that signaled the aircrafts and got them ready for flight. He was station in San Diego on the USS Wisconsin which was of course a aircraft carrier. As I grew up he always told me stories of the good times he had with buddies and just living the good life. This is a first for me to sit down one on one with him and hear about what went on. Before I could even get a word in my grandpa ask me, “Do you know how Veterans Day was brought about?” I was so shock he was into doing this that I just shut my mouth and listened. He continued by saying in 1921, an American soldier -his name "known but to God "-was buried on a Virginia hillside overlooking the Potomac River and the city of Washington, DC. The burial site of this unknown World War I soldier in Arlington National Cemetery symbolized dignity and pride for all American veterans. Similar ceremonies occurred earlier in England and France, where an "unknown soldier” was buried in each nation’s highest place of honor (I later researched and found out it was in England, Westminster Abbey; in France, the Arc de Triomphe). These memorial gestures all took place on November 11, giving universal recognition to the celebrated ending of World War I hostilities at 11 a.m., November 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). Mr. John Eisenhower is a retired Army General from Westchester, Pennsylvania. He is also the son of retired General and later President, Dwight D. Eisehower. He is an author as well as a military historian. Mr. Eisenhower’s other works include, The Bitter Woods, published in 1987 and critically acclaimed by Life magazine author, S. L. A. Marshall as being “written with power by a true military historian.” Reviews of his work from The New Yorker and New York Times Book Review describe his accounts as “Exceptionally interesting” and “Written with enthusiasm that is hard to resist.” Using his military background, Mr. Eisenhower was able to bring an unbiased opinion to the U. S. war with Mexico by pointing out strengths and weaknesses on both sides of the conflict.
The Iraq war, also known as the second Gulf War, is a five-year, ongoing military campaign which started on March 20, 2003 with the invasion of Iraq by U.S. troops. One of the most controversial events in the history of the western world, the war has caused an unimaginable number of deaths, and spending of ridiculous amounts of money. The reason for invasion war Iraq’s alleged possession of weapons of mass destruction, which eventually was disproved by weapons inspectors. Many people question George W. Bush’s decision to engage a war in Iraq, but there might be greater reason why the decision was made. The ideas of George W. The alliance troops entered Kuwait along with the USA troops and cleaned the Kuwaiti streets from the invaders (4). On 26th February 1991 Kuwait was freed from the Iraqi invasion (4). The Kuwaiti people were very happy and they were waving with the Kuwaiti flags as the coalition troops were driving among them. That time was unforgettable to all who witness it.

This wasn 't the first time I had been this far from home by myself, but it was the first time I was making adult decisions without my parents involvement.
