I interviewed Eric Kriemelmeyer, the owner of FASTSIGNS Waldorf (11750 S Business Park Rd Ste 105, Waldorf, MD 20601, (301) 392-1131). Graphic designers are visual communicators. They design and develop print and electronic media for consumers and businesses. They may be employed by advertising agencies, design companies, publishers and other businesses that need design professionals. To become successful in the graphic design industry, you need to have at leasr a bachelors degree and years of experierience, you need to have creativity, computer skills, detail oriented, and artistic abilities. You ahve to make sure you get the cuntomer’s pjojects done on time and make sure that there are no mistake and eveything printed perfectly. What Eric likes most about the job is that he is able to meet many different people. This line of work attracts many different kinds of customers with many different personalities. Eric dislike how stressful the job is. You have to meet so many different deadlines for many different customers, it becomes difficult to keep up with. The biggest challenges are dealing with angry customers and making new, big sales. He said that not many people in this area are looking for big signs. Most of the customers are small businesses, churches or realtors looking for yard signs. The most significant reward is the feeling after you complete you job and your customers are very satisfied. The necessary rewuirements for an entry level job are basic design skills and the ability to talk to customers. The opportunity Eric has had in the job was the ability to go to Dubai to make a presentation on digital signage. The industry isnt changing much in the next few years. The concepts of the design are the same, however, things are becoming more digital. Eric said it is a bad idea to own your own design company, I comes with more more stress than it is worth. There is also almsot no upward mobility in this field. However, if you love designing things for people then persue this career. Eric said that it is very important , when designig, that you are consious about how the product is going to pre produced, How ill the colors come out? How will something cut? Does it need crop marks? Will it be visually pleasing?
