What is the appeal of electronic communications? Why would people replace face-to-face conversations with such nonsense like communication through e-mails, text messaging, and social media? While the use of technology for communication is effectual in its quickness and easiness, it is less substantial than interpersonal communications and experiences. In this technology-driven world where speed and efficiency are important, many people around the world prefer to use electronic devices to communicate with one and another. Those people are also likely the same ones that use electronic devices extensively, thus causing them to forget the true values of face-to-face communications. Face-to-face communication can be defined as a conversation that one has with another party while being in close proximity of each other. This type of communication is important in the workforce, education system, and many others as people are required to communicate and cooperate with his or her colleagues. By communicating in such manner, the speaker and audience are able to hear and observe each other’s tones, facial expressions, and styles of language which can result in an overall better conversation, and more likely a bond or relationship to develop between the two.
To appreciate the values of interpersonal communication, one must first be able to understand the inabilities of electronic communications. In a simple and straight-forward conversation, e-mails and other technological communication devices carry out the conversation quite fluently but in conversations involving emotions, different tones, or nonverbal cues, face-to-face communications work exceedingly better than electronic communications. In the21st century, Amazing changes in communication has affected interpersonal relationships. Some prefer to use technology like Facebook, Line, and Wechat to communicate with their friends rather than talking in person. Communicating with technology will make them alienated. Interpersonal relationships are also important by personal talking, which may lead to improve relationships. Through logic and reasoning, Sherry states, “But what do we have, now that we have what we say we want, now that we have what technology makes easy?”(Turkle). Face to face conversations are now mundane because of the accessibility to interact at our fingertips, at free will through text, phone calls and social media. Belonging, the very essence of a relationship has now become trivial.

...ss social. Our amount of social skills has gone way down over the years. The lawyers and doctors do not have as high of education and the way they interact is not as good. When we talk through messages, it causes conflict resolution, which causes war. What has this world come to, so many kids bring their cell phones to school which distracts them from learning. It is up to the parents to teach their kids the importance of using face to face communication. We cannot back down; limit the amount of electronics they use. “We barely have time to pause and reflect these days on how far communicating through technology has progressed. Without even taking a deep breath, we’ve transitioned from email to chat to blogs to social networks and more recently to twitter” (Alan 2007). Communicating with technology has changed in many different ways. We usually “get in touch” with people through technology rather than speaking with them face to face. The most popular way people discuss things, with another individual, is through our phones. Phones have been around way before I was born in 1996, but throughout the years, they have developed a phone called a “smart phone”. The smart phone has all kinds of new things that we can use to socialize with our peers. On these new phones, we can connect with our friends or family on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Technology has also developed Skype, a place you can talk with people on the computer with instant voice and video for hours. The new communication changes have changed drastically from the new advances made in technology through our smart phones, social networking sites, and Skype.

Advancements in technology have forever changed the way we connect with one another. Starting with the most primitive cave paintings during the Paleolithic era, onto the development of the letter press by Johannes Gutenberg in the 1400s, and now to today’s increasing availability of the Internet, communication is at a record high. Even with the growing capability to correspond, some individuals feel that scores of people may forget the advantages of face-to-face communication or even over the phone conversations, while others may argue that the ability to communicate sans physical interaction closes the gaps caused by distance, therefore making people feel closer than before.
Interpersonal communication is one of the significant skills while communicating with other individuals. It normally covers an extensive area and includes both verbal and non-verbal communication. Body language and facial expression may affect the accurateness of the message transmission directly. Interpersonal communication skills normally ensure that the message is sent and received correctly without any alteration thus improving the communication efficiency. Learning diverse aspects of interpersonal communication has greatly aided me in better understanding of what it consists. I am capable of applying the knowledge gained from this course to my personal experiences. This paper reflects on my personal experience in learning interpersonal communication.
With 80% of Americans using internet, and that 80% spending an average of 17 hours a week online (each), according to the 2009 Digital Future Report, we are online more than ever before. People can't go a few hours let alone a whole day without checking their emails, social media, text messages and other networking tools. The average teen today deals with more than 3,700 texts in just a month. The use of technology to communicate is making face to face conversations a thing of the past. We have now become a society that is almost completely dependent on our technology to communicate. While technology can be helpful by making communication faster and easier, but when it becomes our main form of conversation it becomes harmful to our communication and social skills. The Pearson Podcasting Episode on Communication titled “Technology and Interpersonal Communication” relates very well to our lesson material. This episode is number three in a series and is very similar to Professor Green’s portion of the lecture titled “The Dark Side of the Internet” on CANVAS, because it clearly presents both advantages and disadvantages of Computer Mediated Communication or CMC (Green “Dark”; Podcast). The podcast also reinforces the definition of Interpersonal Relationships as those having a degree of interdependence among the participants (Green “Penetration”; Child, Pearson, and Nelson 39; Podcast).
