Internship Narrative
As a supply chain major, there are several types of positions that are related to manufacturing. There are positions dealing with resource management. There are positions handling production efficiency. There are positions looking at delivery methods. The Student Supply Management position at John Deere will give me knowledge in all of these categories throughout the entire summer. It will allow me to improve skills already obtained and develop new skills in multiple departments which will ultimately help me decide which area of supply chain I want to be apart of.
Having a clear goal to be completed within the first month of an internship will immediately help me learn about John Deere’s systems. My first SMART goal is

My second SMART goal for the internship is to be able to confidently negotiate with a John Deere supplier by learning to recognize the details of each part in production and compare the different supplier possibilities using supplier cost databases by June 30, 2018. The internship will help me achieve this goal by having my supervisor demonstrate several make versus buy decisions with the purpose of me gaining the knowledge of how John Deere selects its suppliers. After gaining the initial knowledge of important supplier criteria my internship lets me participate in resourcing activities. These resourcing activities include looking at the history of suppliers and collecting cost data to eliminate unqualified suppliers. Similarly, Supply Chain Management has taught me knowledge of make versus buy decisions. In this class, we had weekly activities using Excel to find a company’s break-even point for units produced. The results received from this analysis helped me understand if a company’s decision to use a supplier would be more beneficial at a certain number of units produced. Although this knowledge was discussed in class, selecting a supplier is a skill I plan to learn from other workers at John Deere. During my internship, other workers will teach me the skill of gathering and analyzing historical data to make real-time decisions about suppliers. Learning how to select a supplier will be an aspect used in daily activities, but it will be critical to understand information from an accounting department
John Deere was born in Vermont in 1804. His father went to England to find a job in 1808 and never came back, so he was primarily raised by his mother with his three brothers and his one sister. He was an educated man, and had always been fascinated with blacksmithing. At the age of 17, Deere got his first apprenticeship as a blacksmith in Middlebury. He was so talented, that with just a three year apprenticeship he was able to gain so much knowledge and start his own blacksmith company in 1825. Blacksmithing in Vermont wasn’t as substantial as in the West because the soil wasn’t as hard, so when Deere’s business wasn’t flourishing he packed up and moved to the West.
Likewise, being analytical is critical in this field, because it will help me during the job when I have to manage the warehouse or improve the production
John Deere Component Works (JDCW), subdivision of John Deere and Co. was in charged specifically of the manufacturing of tractor component parts. The demand for JDCW’s products had problems due to the collapse of farmland value and commodity prices. Numerous and constant failures in JDCW’s competition for bids, alerted top management to start questioning their current costing methods. As an outcome, the analysis has to be guided to research on the current costing methods with the intention of establishing legitimacy and to help the company in adopting a more appropriate costing system.
Apart from the experience I have gained at LT Security Inc., my various internship positions have also exposed me to eye-opening responsibilities. For example, as a marketing intern at MySelf New York, I engaged in organized discussions with customers as well as colleagues in the pursuit of better promotional and marketing strategies. I have also gained experience with other matters such as employee coaching and assistance, employee relations, communication and implementation of policies and procedures during my time at Stony Brook University as intern in arts management and at Yunnan Changji Real Estate Co. Ltd where I served as an administrative
John Deere is not only a name brand of equipment, but also he is a persons that created many different types of equipment. John Deere had built the company that many people know of which is John Deere.
With different prices and services across the facilities, management is trying to identify opportunities to standardize costs and services across the business units. It was a clear sunny day, spare the few clouds in the sky, the kind that children are so fond of pointing at and calling a dog or train, down the gravel driveway to the barn and house of Graystone stables. Up in their unseen perches, birds call out dutifully, whether they are asking for help or seeking a mate, their chirps and squawk all blend together to form a type of chorus. But every now and then a bird will quit the choir to seek the comforts of the grass. All of the birds were scared from the ground though when they heard the soft puts of a tractor passing by on its way to the barn. The rusted and dented John Deere tractor worked its way slowly to the barn, carrying in its front loader one black dog, panting happily at the prospect of
In the 1960s through the 1970s, companies realized strong engineering, design, and manufacturing functions were strong market strategy keys to create and capture customer loyalty. As the demand for new products rose in the 1980s, these market requirements were to increase their flexibility and responsiveness to adapt existing products and processes or to develop new ones in order to meet customer needs. As manufacturing improved in the 1990s, managers began noticing material and service inputs involving suppliers and their major impact on an organization’s ability to meet customer needs. As a result of these changes, organizations now find that it difficult to manage their own organizations. First, they must be involved in the management of their network of all upstream firms that provide directly or indirectly, as well as the network of downstream firms, which are responsible for delivery and market service of the product to the end customer. In order to succeed, managers have to realize that they cannot do it alone and they must work together on a daily basis with the whole organizations in their supply chains. Because supply chain management involves all functions within an organization, managers need to know what a supply chain is, why it is important, and the impact of supply chain management on the success and profitability of their organization. Today, Wal-Mart topped the list of the America’s biggest companies on the Fortune 500 list, “with sales of almost $345 billion — more than a quarter of a trillion dollars” (Forbs). Wal-Mart’s supply chain management is becoming recognized as a core competitive strategy.
Tractors: From Then to Now “The farm implement industry has profoundly shaped both American agriculture and the national economy. Of all farm implements, the tractor has had the greatest impact on rural life” (Robert C. Williams, qtd. in Olmstead). To understand the history of the John Deere company, one must know its origin, development, and its impact on the farming community.

If I could not meet the other levels, then I clearly was not going to reach self-actualization while working at Sears. I was not engaged in my job because there were not challenges being presented to me, or experiences that would help me grow, and reach my potential. I was often apathetic towards my job, and disinterested that I would bring a book to read or homework to do at the cash register. My managers were not promoting an environment in which the tasks I had were challenging or interesting. I was not receiving training that would further enhance my skills or develop new ones.

The internship will include orientation on the function and will focus primarily on learning and developing new skills. This will help in the deeper understanding of concept through hands on application of the knowledge learned during the internship.
My job at TCS has exposed to the various nuances of Supply Chain Management and therefore, I feel I can add value to my profession through a pursuit of this course.
