Preserving Positivity: Why Transnational Adoption Should End
When families cannot have children many turn to IVF (in vitro fertilization) but often times this treatment fails and after the cost and wait, they lose hope. A last resort option is adoption. The motives behind couples wanting to internationally adopt are disturbing and unethical. Couples feel that if they adopt a baby from Africa or China that they are “saving” a child but the child may have had a good life. Other couples want to feel better than others in the fact that they adopted a impoverished orphan, but some couples believe that a child in foster care is damaged and therefore believe a foreign baby is valuable. When people think of adoption most picture a baby from another country getting brought to the United States and living a joyful life. This is called international adoption and while it seems like a good idea for those children and

China, South Korea, Ethiopia, and Russia are all among the top countries that families adopt from. Each country has their own set of requirements for families to meet in order to qualify to adopt. According to Doctors Marijke Breuning and John Ishiyama, professors at Truman State University, “Malawi requires that prospective adoptive parents foster the child they hope to adopt for 24 months while residing within the country” (Breuning and Ishiyama 89). It is difficult for a family to move across the world for two years in order to receive a child. There is the issue of finding work, housing, and even food in order to get by. Families wanting to adopt would be better off adopting in the United States, where they do not have to meet tough requirements. Adoptive efforts should be focused on their own country, where there are many of orphans in need of homes within 30 minutes of any city in the
For a mother or father to learn that their adopted child, who they believed was an orphan, actually has a caring and loving family is heartbreaking. Adoptive parents feel guilty. The children yearn for their true home. The biological family feels deceived and desire for their child to return. This situation is far too familiar within intercountry adoption cases. Many children are pulled away from home, put into orphanages, and painted as helpless orphans. The actions perpetrated by adoption agencies reflects an underlying network of corruption and exploitation. This is not for the purpose of discouraging international adoption, but to shed light on the horrific practices taking place behind the scenes. Intercountry adoptions are often tangled
Parents have the tendency to overlook how lucky they are to have had the ability to create their own children. Many do not recognize what a true blessing it is to have kids, and that others are not fortunate enough to experience that miracle. Ten percent of couples endure infertility (Advantages) so they must consider other options. A very popular choice is adoption. It is not only a good alternative for the couple, but also for the child who needs a loving home.
Poverty is a cause of adoption of children today. Some of the people in the vast population of developing countries are languishing in poverty. The gap between the poor and the rich is widening with time and this has led to increase in poverty levels in various parts of the world. This is where Canadian individuals, unable to have children of their own, or wanting to make a difference in a child’s life become parents and saviors.
Think back to your very first memory. Are you baking cookies with your mother? Are you throwing a baseball with your dad? Now, imagine your childhood if you did not grow up with a loving family who supported you and cared for you. Alternatively, maybe you grew up in a negative environment therefore; you understand what it is like to feel unloved. What does this have to do with adoption? There are over 1.5 million children without a family in the United States. 1.5 million children do not know what it is like to feel as though they have a purpose. The only way to solve this problem is through adoption because it provides that positive environment that the child never had. Through my research, I have found that domestic adoption is a better option for families in the United States, versus international adoption. One of the main reasons it is a better option is that domestic adoption is much less expensive in the end. A second reason domestic adoption is superior is that it is a faster process. It is quicker because the parents do not have to go through the stubborn and often very difficult adoption agencies. Also, you do not have to travel to the foreign country multiple times to meet with the agency and go through all the extensive paperwork. The last reason domestic adoption is the better option is that the child has the option to meet his or her birth parents later in life. A child who is adopted internationally often does not have any family records or medical history. Despite people saying there is not a need for adoption in the United States, as of the Census in 2000, there are over 1.5 million children ready to be adopted nationally.
Ladies and gentlemen, good morning. Adoption recently has caused a hot-spot debate in Australia . Mr Rudd just argued that we should maintain the policy but I don’t agree with him. I am sure many of you are not satisfied with the current situation because we all clear this is not a great one. Adoption is so important because it is a way to change children’s lives. This debate is not about me and Mr Rudd; it’s about you and these children so you should make the best choice. For too long this policy has been disadvantaged to the children who are adopted or going to be adopted and those foster families. It’s the time to change. Relaxing the regulation of adoption within Australia and from overseas will be one of the liberal party’s aiming next term if I get your support. And let me tell you why choosing to relax adoption’s regulation is stepping up in the right direction to change.
The idea of adoption has been around far longer than the formal legal system of adoption in place today. In the bible, there is a passage detailing the adoption of Ester by her cousin, Mordecai, after the death of her parents. Ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, and Babylonians all had their own systems of adoption. Adoption systems differ from country to country. United States citizens who internationally adopt today allow for the blending of cultures, languages, traditions, and ideals. In contrast, the practice of adult adoption in Japan is a particularly interesting system used quite differently and reflects a lot of traditional Japanese culture itself.
Adoption is the complete and permanent transfer of parental rights and obligations, usually from one set of legal parents to adoptive parents(Ademec 27). Not until the late 19th century did the U.S. legislative body grant legal status to adoptive parents. This is when children and parents started to gain rights and support from the government. Through the years new laws have been passed and amended to keep the system fair to all adoptive parents. In 1994, Congress passed the Multiethnic Placement Act, making it illegal to delay the placement a child to find a racially matching family. In 1996 the Multiethnic Placement Act was amended to say, “One can not use race as a routine consideration in child placement”(Lewin sec.A). Before 1994, it was difficult to place a black child with white adopters. Last year 5,000 children were adopted from Europe, and 6,000 from Asia, while 183 came from Africa.(Lewin sec. A). The number of out-of-country adoptions are so high because of the requirements and regulations one must follow in the U.S. The requirements include being 21, and include being committed and loving. The home income must be adequate enough to support the family. Passing all of the medical exams and filling out the personal information is mandatory. But the main reason people adopt from overseas is because it is much quicker. A person can adopt a child from another country in a matter of months. In the U.S. the wait can exceed 5 years, which is why some people choose international adoption.
Illegal Adoption usually happens in places with higher population of children like China. The babies involved in the adoption are usually from poor families or orphanages. The babies are usually sold by their parent to an orphanage then by the orphanage to an independent person who will then sell the baby to a couple in the United States. Illegal Adoption usually goes without being noticed because either no one questions the little to no documentation or information of the child’s family or background that is given at the time of adoption. Most parents have no idea they are buying black market babies. There are many movies about Illegal Adoption to prove its awareness A recent one on LMN is Baby for sale and in the movie it goes through the plot of the mother being unable to conceive so they call outside resources to adopt a child from another country and the adoption worker sets a price for money that we would not even believe. After the parents ok the price they will travel to the United States and bring the baby and sell them the baby and they go on with their lives. Sometimes the biological parents of the child has no choice to sell them or they have no idea and the hospital will pretend the baby passed away. It is not fair to the parents of the child or to the child itself, the child will grow up wondering about the parents and the adopted parents would have no idea about the adoption except what was given to them. When adopting a child please look at the d...
Family is not determined by a person's last name or blood relations. The traditional idea of a nuclear family, consisting of a husband and wife raising one or more children together, has evolved in recent years. In this modern society, not only is it common for single parents or unmarried couples to raise a family, but, gays and lesbians are also taking part of this profound trend that is re-defining what a family is as a whole. Imagine if a person's privilege or opportunity of becoming a parent was revoked; how would this impact their life? Even though homosexuals are steadily becoming more accepted and integrated into today's prevalent culture, a disunity is posed when it comes to establishing a family of their own through adoption. Homosexual couples should be granted the same rights to adopt children like heterosexual couples can. The freedom to adopt should be equal in all aspects because there are too many children in the foster care who need a loving home, it is narrow-minded to assume that heterosexuals make better parents than homosexuals, and it is prejudice to deny homosexuals the right to adopt children based on their sexuality.
There are so many families that are not able to have their own children, but adoption is a great way for child loving families to have the opportunity to raise and bond with children in need of parents. Since there are so many families wanting to adopt a child, there is no reason anyone can fairly say that a child could ever be unwanted. In 2011 a total of “730,322 abortions were reported to Centers for Disease Control” and only 9,319 children were adopted. Adoptions are always great for children and safe for them as well. Background checks and extensive research is always mandatory before child services allow adults to adopt, and when they are clear to make an adoption, a child’s life is changed and in most cases they are saved. It is a mystery why anyone would choose death over life and abortion over adoption. To abort a baby is to not only take the child’s opportunity at life away, but to also take away another family’s chance at having their own
When a couple or individual decides to adopt a child, they know they are going to take on the responsibility of taking care of someone else’s child. Due to the biological parent(s) who can’t take care of that child anymore, because of either drug abuse, alcohol abuse, abuse to the child or if the parent(s) had died and there is no other care for the child. So that’s why this gives other couples who cannot have kids, the opportunity to promise themselves to be a great parent to a child in need. Though there are some bad things about adoption as well. Like adopting a child from another country of another race, because once that child is adopted into an American family, he or she will be cut off from their culture and never know about their history. Everyone should to know about their culture and history.
“Nearly half of pregnancies among American women are unintended. About four in ten of these are terminated by abortion” (guttmacher). Abortion should not be a first option and quick decision when an unwanted pregnancy happens. Abortion should barely be used unless there are dire circumstances involved. There are a lot of people that want more than anything to be able to adopt a baby and have the baby as their own. Adoption should be chosen in situations where the parent cannot take care of the child and when the child is unwanted. More people should look at adoption as a first choice instead of abortion because it is the best way to give your child a chance at life. Adoption is a great option for unwanted pregnancies and people that are not capable of giving a child a decent life.
“Adopting one child won 't change the world: but for that child, the world will change.” (Unknown)(Buzzle.com). Adoption can take place in multiple shapes, forms, and fashions. You can adopt from a local adoption agency, or adopt from an orphanage half way around the world. You can adopt a child whose parents are no longer living, or you could adopt from a young mother who is not ready to raise a child. You can adopt one child who has touched your heart from an orphanage in Uganda, or a set of triplets being moved around from house to house in foster care. There are still further motivations and reasons for adopting. What if you and your spouse are unable to become pregnant? The desire to be parents does not diminish with the lack of
“When a child looks in the mirror, you want her to know herself. It is hard to face the world when you don’t know where your face came from”(adoption quotes.2013.pp1). International adoption is the most widely form of adoption used in the United States. Although many people consider this form of adoption as a “chance to save the day and be a hero”, it also opens the door for many inappropriate activities. International adoption has a malicious effect on American society because it hinders U.S adoption, it creates mental issues for the child, and it promotes child trafficking.
Adoption has many pros and cons, such as cross-cultural. Cross-cultural in adoption is when a child and the adopting parents are two different races or come from two different cultures. Cross-cultural adoption is not the same thing as interracial adoption. Some people say that you should not do this because the child may not feel like they fit in with the family. Others say it is great that the child found a loving family that will be getting taken care of. The caring person would agree that it is good and okay to adopt a child with a different race or culture.
