In the text Charlotte Doyle by Avi I think the theme of the story is to be brave. The main character of the story, Charlotte doyle, has to go through many things on her ride to America. She faces internal and external conflicts. In the story she is on the boat with only men, which can cause trouble. One of the conflicts she faces in the beginning of the story is when she gets sick. This is an example of an internal conflict. She stays sleeping and does not try to get up. Later she is better and can go back to her normal self. This can show bravery by her not just giving up and not try to get better. After this she gets up and has tea. Another conflict she faces is when Zachariah gives Charlotte a dirk (Knife). The greatest conflict in the book was Man vs. Man for David, because he had to face his childhood of when his sister June had died due to down syndrome. This internal conflict led to the guilt he experienced when dealing with the secret of giving his daughter Phoebe away and lying to Norah(his wife) that Phoebe had died at birth. Norah and the family later realised Phoebe was alive but in that time frame before that the family was falling apart.

Courage is an attribute that someone has when they stand up for what they believe in. In the novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred D. Taylor, Cassie shows some acts of courage. Cassie faces some challenges and she handles them in different ways. Cassie shows courage by standing up for Little Man, volunteering to be splashed by the bus for revenge, and standing up to Lillian Jean. I think that she did the right thing when she stood up for Little Man. She was trying to make things right.

The major internal conflict that Janelle faces throughout the entire book is how she thinks of herself. She always seems to be arguing with herself about whether she is pretty, or whether she has a chance with Devon. Like when she was imagining herself as Mrs. Devon Hope, and then starts saying, “Dream on fool. You can stand here in the girls’ room and practice saying that name ‘til your tongue falls out, or the change bell rings, whichever comes first, and it still won’t ever be true. Face it. The reason why I argue courage is because the youngest brother leaves his family to start a new life and that requires courage. He also is too rebellious to be like his older brother. Immorality is a given theme in this book. The mistreatment of servants and the 66th birthday party that was overtly sexual, concubines argue that their society is full of lewdness and that they lack any morals. An interesting observation is that all of the women they love are pure and virtuous and 2 of them die horribly which goes to show how immoral the author viewed his society. Another point to be argued is that inequality is also a common theme of this novel. The main characters in The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle are Captain Jaggery, Charlotte Doyle, Zachariah, and the crew. In the beginning, Charlotte is loading onto a ship called the Seahawk and she keeps getting strange warnings from the crew that she shouldn’t be on board. A crew member named Zachariah is very kind to her and he gives her a dirk but won’t tell her why. Almost immediately after she gets very seasick and Zachariah takes care of her while she is sick. Zachariah tells Charlotte a story about Captain Jaggery. In the story he told of Captain Jaggery a man named Cranick did not tie a knot correctly and the captain cut off his arm. When Charlotte meets Captain Jaggery, at first she is delighted that he is such a gentleman, but as the time goes on she becomes very suspicious. Charlotte had

Mr. Wiggins wants to leave the town and everyone in it except for Vivian, his girlfriend, behind, but he can’t or won’t. Everything is hanging in the balance of what happens to Jefferson. Mr. Wiggins is characterized through a series of changes with the help of one man, Jefferson, throughout A Lesson Before Dying mainly shown in spoken quotes.

By doing this, the child would save her parent’s from years of heartache and regret but would ultimately lead to the end of her own existence. Scout believes at the beginning of the book that courage is all to do with physical feats like fist fighting. Scout and Jem though Atticus was courageous when he shot the mad dog, but Atticus just shrugged it off telling his children that that is not ?real courage?. The children soon see that moral courage is more valuable after Miss Dubose said "Your father's no better than the niggers and trash he works for!" Chapter 11, Page 113 after they walked past her house. On the way back Atticus just walked by and told Mrs. Dubose, ?you look as pretty as a picture?
