Evolution is a theory, just like gravity or the shape of the earth. The caliber of measures taken to include the theory in the public school systems is greater than any other theory in science. The question is, if evolution is the only theory, does that make it automatically true? What if there was another theory that could be brought forward to challenge or contradict it? The theory of intelligent design has that capability. The gaps that have arisen in evolution lead to an alternative theory that states many features found in humans are too complex to have appeared entirely from evolution. The base of the argument between Evolution and Intelligent Design stems from the decision of whether Intelligent Design is wholly scientific or not. …show more content…
Religious parents of students involved in the trial that occurred in Dover, Pennsylvania concerning Intelligent Design being taught in public schools, were concerned, that through evolution, God was being pushed out of the picture and their children would no longer firmly believe in their religion. Scientists used this, as well as their own opinion of the matter, to come to the conclusion that intelligent design does in fact violate the separation of church and state, and they also said that it was religion in disguise. Some scientists went as far to say that the goal of intelligent design is to “re-Christianize” society. But, the fallacy in the scientists’ decision is found through the fact that Darwin’s theory of evolution is, in all actuality just a theory, not a law. Coming off of that, other theories, such as intelligent design, should have the opportunity to be taught in schools to allow students to have a chance to form their own opinion of the matter. No one is trying to disprove Darwin, but trying to allow room for other theories other than evolution. If you drop something, and it falls upward instead of to the ground, you are going to try to find a way to explain why it fell upward, but you are not going to completely throw the theory of gravity out the window. The same instance is being used in this
The Dover Area School District of Dover, Pennsylvania is seeking approval from the General Assembly of Pennsylvania House to include the theory of intelligent design in the instruction of biology. Intelligent design, also known as I.D., is a theory that seeks to refute the widely-accepted and scientifically-supported evolution theory. It proposes that the complexity of living things and all of their functioning parts hints at the role of an unspecified source of intelligence in their creation (Orr). For all intents and purposes, the evidence cited by I.D. supporters consists only of the holes or missing links in evolutionary theory; it is a widely-debate proposal, not because ?of the significant weight of its evidence,? but because ?of the implications of its evidence? (IDnet).
In Inherit the Wind, a 1960s film adaptation directed by Stanley Kramer, the battle between religion and science was tested, portrayed through the Scopes Trial of 1925. In the trail, John Scopes, a high school science teacher, was accused and convicted of teaching Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution, curriculum that was forbidden by Tennessee state law. It is clear that a focal point of the film was the discussion of whether religion should be the driving force behind education, or if science and empirical study is a better alternative. This discussion is alive and well in 2017, crucial in a time where Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, is a known believer in theories of ‘intelligent design,’ a theory that suggests divine guidance in the
...cientists explain it to happen from the research previously done and what humans know of it is that, it is too complex for average human knowledge to comprehend. Humans generally choose to believe what there is proof for and in the case of evolution there is none. Realistically the idea of evolution is too complex and the general public finds it improbable.
Evolution has been taught in all public schools for as long as many can recall. Though the process of evolution is not the only theory, schools have been teaching it as if it is the complete truth, ignoring other aspects and only focusing and targeting on Darwin's theory of Evolution. However, there are still many other ideas that the students should be informed of as well because all are theories, all are hypothetic. Teaching of the evolution theory have yet to be proven reliable and confirmed by all scientists, thus it should not be taught in schools and should be left for students to wonder and discover by themselves.
Natural selection is the vitiating factors affecting survival and reproduction based on physical characteristics. The term of natural selection, created by Charles Darwin, was derived from a comparison of natural selection to forced “selective breeding” (Than). Natural selection challenges traditional views because it caused friction between Darwin’s book On the Origin of Species and religious creationism. While in fact, Darwin’s theory of evolution has support from the evidence made by numerous types of scientific studies including genetics, paleontology, and developmental biology. And creationism, has no physical evidence or proof other than being in the bible. This places creation, supported by the bible, and evolution, supported by numerous scientific studies, against one another. Creationists against the theory of evolution state that everything was created by a single god, and explained that divine will govern the evolutionary process. This goes against Darwin’s theory that natural selection, not divine will, governs evolution (Feiro 3). Darwin does not deny creation, that the world may have been created by a religious figure, but it is operated by the natural laws displayed in his theories (Feiro 3-4). The scientific community accepted the gravitational theory without having to change religion, only their views and perspectives on physical properties. Similarly, people worldwide have accepted the theory of evolution with exception to these specific special interest groups. Even with the friction caused by the theory of evolution, such theory is essential to expanding scientific
In 1859, Charles Darwin published his groundbreaking Origin of Species, which would introduce the seminal theory of evolution to the scientific community. Over 150 years later, the majority of scientists have come to a consensus in agreement with this theory, citing evidence in newer scientific research. In an average high school biology classroom, one may imagine an instructor that has devoted much of his life to science and a predominantly Christian class of about twenty-five students. On the topic of evolution, one of the students might ask, “Why would God have taken the long route by creating us through billion years of evolution?” while another student may claim “The Book of Genesis clearly says that the earth along with all living creatures was created in just six days, and Biblical dating has proven that the earth is only 6000 years old.” Finally a third student interjects with the remark “maybe the Bible really is just a book, and besides, science has basically already proven that evolution happened, and is continuing to happen as we speak.” A secular country like our own does and should treat each argument as valid. However, only the third student’s argument cites scientific backing. Is it fair that we are denying that intelligent design be taught as an alternative to evolution in our science classes? When a belief has no legitimate scientific backing, it is not science, but rather a philosophy, whereas biology is in fact science, which is why intelligent design does not belong in science classes in public schools.
The theory of evolution, as set forth by Charles Darwin in 1859, stated that all plant and animal life evolved over long periods of time from simple to more complicated forms through mutation and adaptation. He also taught that only the fittest of each species would survive. He further postulated that the first living cell evolved in a "warm warm little pond" and that it took billions of years for the present diversity of living things to evolve. At the time, it was thought that the few "missing links" in the fossil record would be soon filled.(Darwin, 1927 ). Today, however, there is today a considerable body of scientific evidence that refutes this entire theory.
In a scientific aspect, the existence of an intelligent designer cannot be denied, due to the lack of evidence that contradicts otherwise. On the other hand, creationists cannot prove the existence of an intelligent designer but indefinitely believe through a concept called faith. In addition, both concepts agree that microevolution occurs. For example, since the arrival of sparrows to North America, mutations have occurred from different locations.
The theory of evolution is often taught in the public school textbooks. It is widely felt that evolution is an attempt to completely remove God from all aspects of creation. Evolution destroys all meaning, purpose, direction, justice and hope in life. “You came from nothing, you are going nowhere, life is meaningless!” The Bible says in Psalm 14:1: “The fool has said in his heart, there is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that does good.” Secular schools attempts to erase God from the classroom and from the minds of the next generation by eliminating the Bible as the basis for all knowledge. They pontificate to students and do not allow them the freedom to use their faith-based foundations to express their understanding without being stifled for not being politically correct.
Intelligent design is defined as the theory of life, or the universe cannot have arisen by chance and was designed and created by some intelligent entity. “A smattering of state laws and school board initiatives during the late 1990s and early 2000s attempted to replace the theory of evolution by natural selection with the doctrine of intelligent design in public school biology curricula but most have lost favor through public response or local court rulings (Head, 2014).” For a theory that is not considered a scientific theory, but more of a religious aspect it is looked as controversial.
In the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, it specifically states that the teachings of religion should not be allowed in public schools. Former president, George W. Bush stated "school officials should never favor one religion over another, or favor religion over no religion." Contrary to both Bush’s statement and the First Amendment, public schools are still are still teaching their students creationism and expelling evolution from their curriculum. Therefore, the state laws that make it illegal to teach evolution in schools in America go against the constitutional rights
The first signs of life date back to 2.9 billion years ago but before the 19th century, most people had believed in God, creation, or Intelligent Design. This all changed when The Origin of Species was Published in 1859 by Charles Darwin; he believed in the concept of species changing over time, evolution. The most controversial topic the world has ever known. From ideas of the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Chinese as well as in medieval Islamic science. Beginning with modern biological taxonomy when two opposing ideas influenced with what today is known as Intelligent Design and Evolution. Intelligent Design tells a story of how the features of the universe are explained by intelligent causes. By Intelligent causes, they mean complex patterns
There have been many court cases and debates over the teaching of evolution in schools. The argument isn’t only from Christians, but also from school officials, scientist and parents. For more than eighty years, people have fought for evolution to be taught properly, if at all. Some fight for equal treatment; some want disclaimers placed on textbooks; while some fight for what should be included in textbooks. The courts hold the decisions on what is allowed and what is not. When the people of America fight for equal treatment, freedom to teach, or critical thinking, they are shot down in the name of religion. The law doesn’t allow teaching creationism, sitting separation of church and state, but this law is not being defined correctly. Creationism is science, and evolution could be considered a religion. Both creationism and evolution should be taught in schools, because textbooks and teachers are censored and biased when teaching just evolution in the class room.
Evolution is an unproven theory forced into the minds of youths through the public school system. Some argue evolution as the only true answer in the world of science; yet ignorantly chose to ignore the countless gaps of unsolved information. Evolution is a religion taught as science, leaving many students, such as myself, to follow along with this bizarre theory in order to achieve the grade I desire.
Years ago a discussion about the start of the world raised a debate about how science should be taught in public schools. Must evolution be taught alone in science classes, or must it be substituted by theories for example “intelligent design,” the idea that the Earth and its existence is so complex that it must have been made by a supernatural “designer” or God? This ongoing debate in American education since 19th century that both theories evolution and intelligent design should be taught in schools but intelligent design shouldn’t be taught in science classes. In this paper, the student will discuss Darwin’s theory of evolution, Intelligent Design, and the reasons Intelligent Design should not be taught in science classrooms.
