The mission of a student for having a higher education is not just getting a better job, or making more money; the way to have a better life is the most important thing that a student can learn by going to the college, and one of the skills that really can help them is how to communicate with other people. The college can be a good place to learn the students how to companion with others who have different race, religion, ideas and so on. A safe space is a place for students to talk about their beliefs, ideas, opinions, differences, and their views about the problems of the society without fearing of being judged about their differences, but intellectual safe space only allows the ideas that are in the same points of view to be discussed . This rule is in opposite of freedom of speech, does not allow students to think and talk about their ideas freely, and does not teach them how to treat with different opinions in their life. intellectual safe spaces in colleges. The first Amendment of Constitution of the United States guarantees the right of freedom of speech. All people can talk about their ideas and opinions. The colleges are the places that should learn the students to fight for their rights, and to change the society by their great ideas, but imagine what happens if the colleges do not allow the students to talk by different ideas. It is the first step for a society to feel censorship and isolation, and can cause so much problems in the society. Carnelia Roux believes that “safe spaces assume that we will be less isolated if we express our individual diversity.” (57) The students should not give the freedom of speech away. If the colleges, the places that can change the society, take their first right, no one knows what will happen next. When students feel they have a place to talk about their ideas, it helps them to think more and then talk about their ideologies, but by intellectual safe space all students are not allowed to talk about their ideas.
The students with a different ideas feel there are no ears to hear their ideas, and they loose their self-confidence, and in the other way, the students who are attending the intellectual safe spaces will get the false self-confidence, and believe they are always right, so they can not progress in their life, because they always believe they know better than anyone else. Peter Wright has a good statement that “ This affects not only how students treat each other’s opinions, but also how they treat their own opinions.” (Wright) The students should start to talk with other people with different ideas, so they can teach each other or learn from each other, and it is one of the biggest achievements that a person can have in
college. The students should start to talk about their ideas, and then after a time they can learn how to deal with people with different ideas. They will learn that they are not always correct. as Katy Waldman believes “success by one metric has little to do with success by the other” (Waldman). The students start to hear more and more, and then they will see that they learn more and more. Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt Just mentioned the advantage of this opportunity in the best way. They said ”It is creating a culture in which everyone must think twice before speaking up” (Lukianoff and Haidt). The students will be familiar with other ideas, and even with other ways of life, and it can help them to find their paths, be a better person, and have a better mentally and emotionally life. By intellectual safe space, the colleges take this opportunity from the students. A safe space can remove the pain of differences in a society, and in colleges as a smaller society, and “many educators have adopted this concept to consciously (re)create their classrooms as safe space, so that all students—including those with marginalized identities—are free to “unravel, build and rebuild knowledge” (Antipode), but by intellectual space free, students can not taste the right of freedom of speech, so they allow anyone to take it away in their life. They can not start to talk about their ideas with other people, and they can not learn how to live better in a society with different ideas.
College is full of new experiences, new people, and new communities, and many universities encourage the exchange of new ideas and diversity among students. This year, the University of Chicago sent out a letter to all of its incoming freshmen informing them that in keeping with their beliefs of freedom of expression and healthy discussion and debate, the school would not provide “safe spaces” or “trigger warnings”. Freedom of speech has been a controversial issue throughout the world. Our ability to say whatever we want is very important to us as individuals and communities. Although freedom of speech and expression may sometimes be offensive to other people, it is still everyone’s right to express his/her opinion under the American constitution which states that “congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or the press”. Although this amendment gave people the right express thier opinions, it still rests in one’s own hands as how far they will go to exercise that right of freedom of speech.
In her op-ed, "In College and Hiding From Scary Ideas", Shulevitz discusses the idea behind freedom of speech on college campuses and how safe spaces are snuffing it out. Shulevitz uses multiple examples of problems that have arisen because of safe spaces at universities such as Brown University, Columbia University, and Oxford 's University 's Christ Church college. Debate cancellations, essay opinions that caused protest, and other situations involving freedom of speech that Shulevitz uses to back up her opinion that safe spaces are nothing but harm to college campuses. However, there are limitations to our constitutional liberties on campus and they, most frequently, manifest themselves in the form of free speech zones, hate speech and poor university policy. Most school codes are designed to protect students, protect educators and to promote a stable, non-disruptive and non-threatening learning environment. However, students’ verbal freedom becomes limited via “free speech zones.” Free Speech Zones are areas allocated for the purpose of free speech on campus. These zones bypass our constitutional right to freedom of speech by dictating where and when something can be said, but not what can be said.
This occurs even when the regulations arent enforced souly because they fear being punished for what they may say. As shown in Silverglate and Lukianoffs essay, some campuses go to great extents when giving students permission to give free speeches. They claim that “as long as the policy exists, the threat of enfocement remains real and will inevitably influence some peoples speech” (636). This is a valid argument because they then proceed by saying that The First Amendment calls it a clinging effect. Another effect of these regulations would be that colleges are teaching their students that their opinions and beliefs should not be shared when they are even slightly controversial.
