In the earlier days there was an inmate code that prisoners abided to, but as decades went by the prisoner code would slowly diminish due to new, younger, and less intellectual capacity used by inmates. Inmates become residents of the prison and learn to form their own customs, beliefs, value systems, and lifestyles. Part of the inmate code is to act masculine for those who are placed in a maximum-security prison. To act masculine gives the impression to other cellmates that you are tough, firm, and don’t give in to others. Prisoners have the chance to make the guards associates which can help them in long run to learn who to trust and which ones not to trust. Inmates must form their own customs, beliefs, value systems and lifestyles. A reason a new inmate might reject the notions of the inmate code is because they are serving a short sentence and are unwilling to accept the prisonization process. New inmates continue to have a large contact with the outside world and continue to keep their personality they had before entering the prison system. Prisoners that don’t adapt to the prison life have an excellent chance to reenter society compared to those that rely on the inmate code. Accepting the prison life may not be as easy to adapt, but considering that many inmates who are serving longer sentences must find their place and what role they will be playing. I would keep to myself, respect others, and keep myself grounded by following the set rules that have been adopted into the prison system. It sounds a lot easier said than done, but while awaiting a transfer to a prison I will hear the horror stories of the prison life. I will enter prison hearing belittling shouts from other prisoners and be greeted in degradation ceremony reminding once again that I’m no longer a freed man, but a caged animal. The feeling of having emotions will slowly leave my body as I will have to learn how to look out for myself and make enemies in the process if I plan to survive the prison life. I will no longer have alone time or be able to wander wherever I please in the world instead I would have to use my greater imagination to wander off to the outside to help me feel
