Thesis- By the end of the class you will know what the different kinds of dreams are. I. Intro: My name is Marwa Abdein and today I’m going to talk about dreaming and the different types of dreams. Every one of us dreams even if we might forget the dream. We spend more than two hours a night dreaming, yet scientists do not know much about how or why we dream. II. Main Points: a. Different types of dreams 1. Maladaptive Day Dreaming: This is a disorder where people spend about 60 percent of their waking life in a self-designed imaginary world. This condition causes intense daydreaming that distracts a person from their real life. Maladaptive daydreaming is often misdiagnosed as schizophrenia. It can interfere with your daily life. It can be …show more content…
Recurring Dreams: They are experienced frequently in one’s life especially when a person experiences stress or change. Recurrent dreams occur in between 60% and 75% of adults. The common themes include: being attacked or chased, falling, being stuck, being late, missing or failing an exam, and even losing control of a car. Even if recurrent dreams stop for a certain time, they may return again during a new period of stress. b. Sleep Walking 1. Is also called “somnambulism” 2. Is much more common in children than adults and is more likely to occur if a person is sleep deprived 3. May be difficult to awaken and will probably not remember the sleepwalking incident. 4. Symptoms are sitting up in bed and looking around, walking around the room or house, to leaving the house and even driving long distances. 5. It can be quite dangerous not to wake a sleepwalker. 6. Between 1% and 15% people sleepwalk c. Sleep Paralysis 1. Causes you not to speak, move your arms and legs, body, and head. 2. You are still able to breathe normally. You are also fully aware of what is happening. 3. Can last for seconds or minutes. 4. Very much like normal sleep paralysis, a demon can feel like it’s pressing down on your chest or choking
Organization: Topical pattern. Audience analysis: The audiences are raging from 20-21, and are currently residential students at Liberty University. They are all from South Korea, but each has different backgrounds. Topic: Nursing can be used to show and share the love of God.

The discovery of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep suggested that sleep was not, as it was thought to be, a dormant state but rather a mentally dynamic one. Your brain is, in fact, very active in this state, almost to the level at which it is when a person is awake. Yet during this active stage in which most dreams occur, the movements of the rest of the body are completely stilled. To imagine this paralysis during dreams not occurring is a frightful image, since in many cases dreams are violent and active. When the neurotransmitters that control the movement of the body do not work properly the person develops REM sleep behavioral disorder (RBD).
Catherine Valente remembers clearly about her terrifying experience. It was around 3 in the morning when she woke up in the middle of the night, she saw an old woman figure with long white dress, long black hair, and awfully long nails sitting on her chest. She felt like as if she’s paralyzed. She couldn’t move a muscle or even open her mouth to scream. She laid there unable to move for at least 15 minutes. Have you ever had the same experience like Catherine, felt like you were awake but had some difficulty to move your body? You might have even felt petrified but could not call for help? This weird phenomenon is called Sleep Paralysis.
This may be attributed to muscle tremors and altered sensorium thus inability to control normalcy of the body posture. Response to both auditory, visual and tactile stimuli is also affected. Speech is impaired as the urge to acquire immediate sleep increases. The person may exhibit confused speech or in worse scenarios incoherence sets in. Visual hallucinations are one of the earliest signs of sleep deprivation since the eyes are directly affected. Colour distinction becomes a problem after missing 72 hours of sleep
Arousal disorders are the most common type of parasomnia. These disorders include: confusional arousals, sleepwalking, sleep terrors and nightmares. Experts believe that each is related and share some symptoms. Essentially, they occur because a person is in a mixed state of being both asleep and awake, generally coming from the deepest stage of non-dreaming sleep. The individual is awake enough to act out complex behaviors, but asleep enough not to be aware of or remember them.
Could someone commit a crime or murder while sleeping? Could someone drive 14 miles from home without waking up or wrecking? How do you determine if someone was sleepwalking when only the victim and offender would know that answer and one of them is dead? How do some people get away with the sleepwalking murder defense while others don’t? Many questions come to mind when sleepwalking and murder come into play. While asleep people have been known to talk, walk, do simple tasks, eat, fight with your spouse and even have sex, but when it comes to the murder defense it a whole other story.
Sleep paralysis is a condition that occurs at either the onset or upon awakening of sleep. The medical terms for the two forms of sleep paralysis are hypnogogic and hypnopompic (1). When a person falls asleep, the body secretes hormones that relax certain muscles within the body, causing it to go into paralysis. Doing this prevents the body from acting out a person's dream, which could result in an injury. Sleep paralysis generally runs within one's family or in those who suffer from narcolepsy (2), but there is currently no explanation for why some people get it while others do not.
In this paper I hope to open a window to the vast and mysterious world of dreaming. To most people, information about dreams isn’t common knowledge. In researching this subject though, I found that everybody has and reacts to dreams, which are vital to your mental health. You will also find how you can affect your dreams and how they affect you.
Guilleminault, C. & Palombini, L. & Pelaya, R. & Chervin, R. (January 2003). Sleepwalking and sleep terrors in prepubertal children: what triggers them? Pediatrics, 11(1), 17-25.
Did you ever awaken and find yourself unable to move? Perhaps you sensed a presence in your room or a pressure on your chest. This is sleep paralysis. It is a common disorder that affects millions of people. Most believe it occurs as we are on the edge of REM sleep. The disorder has been connected with such hallucinogenic events such as alien abduction or an evil presence. Sleep paralysis is an inability to move or speak, occasionally accompanied by hallucinations, for up to several minutes upon awakening or just before falling asleep.
In this open question assignment, I will be discussing my first experience with sleep walking. Psychology Today defines the term sleep walking as “…a sleeping disorder characterized by walking or other activity while seemingly still asleep… Other names for it are walking during sleep and somnambulism” (cite). In addition, somnambulism is the partial arousal from stage 4 of sleep (powerpoint slide).
Dreams are series of thoughts, images, and sensations occurring in a person’s mind during sleep. Dreams occur during a certain stage of sleep known as REM. Several different psychologists, including Freud and Hobson, have studied dreams. Psychologists have provided many theories as to what dreams are and the meanings behind them.
We spend one third of our lives sleeping and 15-20% of that time is spent dreaming. (1) Dreams are a sequence of images that appear involuntary to the mind of somebody who is sleeping, often a mixture of real and imaginary characters, places, and events, according to the Encarta dictionary. There are many types of dreams. Lucid dreams can be the most fascinating if one can master them. In lucid dreams you realize that you are dreaming and instead of automatically waking up you stay asleep and control every aspect of your dream. Your thoughts can effortlessly paint any dreamscape and you have full mental faculties as you would if you were awake.(4) Your imagination is the limit! Another more mysterious type of dream is precognitive dreams. This is where time and space no longer seem to fit any rational logical meaning. Precognition is an ability to know and experience a future event before it ever occurs (4) Many experience this type of dream and slowly forget it over time, until it happens in real life. When it occurs in real life you automatically feel a sense of déjà vu and you notice something familiar about the s...
For thousands of years humans have experienced a phenomenon which we describe today as dreaming. It has puzzled and sparked interest to all whom experience it. For as long as people have been dreaming, there have been people trying to understand and interpret them. This research paper examines the causation and deeper meaning of dreams. It will compare and contrast the differentiating ideas on the subject by famous psychologists and also examine first-hand accounts from real individuals. The objective of paper is to shed some light on this complex and bizarre behavior.
