There are drugs out there that are really dangerous, and I’m sure you know that but there is a type of drug that out there that people we trust are giving it out to people. Those people are our doctors! And they are giving out prescription opioids that are really dangerous and highly addictive. Opioids is a class of drug that it naturally found in the poppy flower. The poppy flower is used to make just about all of the different opioids. Some prescription opioids are made from the plant directly and others are made by scientists in labs using the same chemical structure. There are many different kinds of prescription opioids that come from the poppy flower for example: Oxycodone, OxyContin, Percodan, Percocet, Hydrocodone, Vicodin, Lortab, …show more content…
Lorcet, ,Diphenoxylate, Lomotil, Morphine, Kadian, Avinza, MS Contin, Codeine, Fentanyl Duragesic, Propoxyphene Darvon, Hydromorphone, Dilaudid, Meperidine, Demerol, and Methadone. These are most of them and they treat different kinds of pain like: acute "severe" pain, often after surgery, forms of chronic pain, cough and diarrhea People often keep using these prescription opioids after they don’t need it even after the pain or any reason is gone.
Opioids can also make people feel very relaxed and "high" which is why they are sometimes used for nonmedical reasons and that’s why people use it afterwards. If you take more of the drug than you need can be really dangerous because opioids and or prescription opioids can be highly addictive and overdoses and death are really common. Some of the side effects of abusing drugs: Highly addictive can slow one’s breathing to dangerous levels, including accidental overdose, particularly dangerous when used in combination with alcohol. There are many reasons people misuse the drugs like to feel good or get high, to relax or relieve tension by using painkillers and tranquilizers, to reduce appetite by using stimulants, to experiment, to be accepted by peers and succumb to peer pressure, to be safe, it is a false belief that prescription drugs are safer than street drugs, to be legal it is a mistaken thought that taking prescription drugs without a, prescription is legal, and (once they do it for a while) to feed an addiction. And there are many more reasons why people miss use the
drugs. One of the most missed used and the most deadly type of opioids is one that a lot of people know. Heroin is one of the world's most dangerous opioids, and is used as a medicine in some countries but it has never been used as a medicine in the United States.
Doctors work under intense pressure, and if a pill could fix a patient’s problems than many saw nothing wrong with that. What exacerbated the problem was that many hospitals also changed their modus operandi with regards to treatment. In some hospitals, “doctors were told they could be sued if they did not treat pain aggressively, which meant with opiates (95). However once the patient became addicted and could no longer get their prescription legally refilled, the drug dealers saw their chance. What is surprising is the fact that pharmaceutical companies acted in the same manner as drug dealers. Both sides did not care about the end user, and the problems they would have to deal with after using what was given to them. Their motive was purely to profit as much as possible, and they did not care about who would get hurt as a result of their
Opioid addiction is a tragedy that affects countless of Americans on a daily basis. Almost everyone is acquainted to someone, who suffers from opioid addiction. Everyone, but specifically family and friends of the victims to opioid addiction need to understand why their loved ones are so susceptible to becoming addicted to opioids. The word opioid in itself is complex to define, but it entails a variety of prescription medications. Most opioids are used as pain management medications and qualify as CII medications also known as narcotics. They are supposed to be used on an “as needed” basis, but that is not the case for many users of opioids. Opioids cause great fear in the health community because they are easily addictive and
The next time you consider popping ibuprofen, for a headache or joint pain, understand that relief may come with a deadly price — heart attack, stroke and potentially life threatening gastrointestinal bleeding.
Surprisingly, some people actually take this drug on purpose for the euphoric high that it produces. This practice is also extremely dangerous because in addition to the side effects, the drug can be addictive. This means that the longer you use it, you need to use more and more to reach the same level of “high” and if you stop taking it, you go through withdrawal.
Opioids are used as pain relievers and although it does the job, there are adverse side effects. Opioids are frequently used in the medical field, allowing doctors to overprescribe their patients. The substance can be very addicting to the dosage being prescribed to the patient. Doctors are commonly prescribing opioids for patients who have mild, moderate, and severe pain. As the pain becomes more severe for the patient, the doctor is more likely to increase the dosage. The increasing dosages of the narcotics become highly addicting. Opioids should not be prescribed as pain killers, due to their highly addictive chemical composition, the detrimental effects on opioid dependent patients, the body, and on future adolescents. Frequently doctors have become carless which causes an upsurge of opioids being overprescribed.
Opioids work by attaching to specific proteins called opioid receptors which are located on nerve cells in the body. When the drug attaches to the receptors it reduces the perception of pain, but it can also cause drowsiness, altered mental status, and nausea. Misuse and addiction to opioids are very common. According to the CDC 1,000 people annually are seen in the Emergency Department for treatment regarding misuse of prescribed opioids. Addiction occurs in older adults aged forty years and older more frequently than adults aged twenty to
Opiates are a class of drugs that are used for chronic pain. Opioids are substances that are used to relieve pain by binding opiate receptors throughout the body, and in the brain. These areas in the brain control pain and also emotions, producing a feeling of excitement or happiness. As the brain gets used to these feelings, and the body builds a tolerance to the opioids, there is a need for more opioids and then the possibility of addiction. There are different forms of opioids manufactured such as Morphine, Oxycodone, Buprenorphine, Hydrocodone, and Methadone.
In medical school/pharmacology school, medical professionals are taught to treat severe pain with opioids. However, opioids should be prescribed with the possibility of future dependency in mind. Physicians often struggle with whether they should prescribe opioids or seek alternative methodologies. This ethical impasse has led may medical professionals to prescribe opioids out of sympathy, without regard for the possibility of addiction (Clarke). As previously stated, a way to address this is use alternative methods so that physicians will become more acquainted to not not treating pain by means of opioid
Health Specialist Angela Stander said, “ studies have shown that in as little as seven days you can become physically dependent on them” (Bringhurst). Pain is difficult to measure and patients need to understand and verbalize their symptoms and needs. Doctors also need to be more thorough about the effects and dangers of opioids. They need to spend more time educating patients and they should have more natural and healthy alternatives. Physicians are usually more inclined to increase patients dosage as time goes on and they become more tolerant to what they have (Lockhart, “Utah Opioid Bills”). Patients are taught to trust their doctors so a lot of the times they won’t question things that their doctors say, even if it doesn’t seem right to
Opium, the first opioid, is derived from the sap of opium poppies, whose growth and cultivation dates back to the ancient civilization of Mesopotamia around 3400 BC. Egyptians and Persians initially used opium. Eventually spreading to various parts of Europe, India, China, and the Middle East. During the 18th century, physicians in the U.S. used opium as a therapeutic agent for multiple purposes, including relieving pain in cancer, spasms from tetanus, and pain attendant to menstruation and childbirth. It was merely towards the end of the 18th century that some physicians came to recognize the addictive quality of opium.
The rate of death due to prescription drug abuse in the U.S. has escalated 313 percent over the past decade. According to the Congressional Quarterly Transcription’s article "Rep. Joe Pitt Holds a Hearing on Prescription Drug Abuse," opioid prescription drugs were involved in 16,650 overdose-caused deaths in 2010, accounting for more deaths than from overdoses of heroin and cocaine. Prescribed drugs or painkillers sometimes "condemn a patient to lifelong addiction," according to Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This problem not only affects the lives of those who overdose but it affects the communities as well due to the convenience of being able to find these items in drug stores and such. Not to mention the fact that the doctors who prescribe these opioids often tend to misuse them as well. Abusing these prescribed drugs can “destroy dreams and abort great destinies," and end the possibility of the abuser to have a positive impact in the community.
Still, some people think that it is good to use drugs. My thoughts are that they should not be used because of all the danger- from dying from to getting arrested. Certainly, one should be aware of hazardous effects. What about the health risks? I think that the health risk is to much for any one to handal.
Central Idea: Prescription drugs can cause serious mental and physical health problems if they are taken incorrectly or abused.
3. Most users roll it into a cigarette called a "joint", or into a cigar called a "blunt". Users may also smoke it in a water pipe referred to as a "bong" or they can eat it by mixing it into different foods called "special food".
Users who abuse drugs by prescription improperly use them by taking somebody else 's prescription, taking medication to get high, or taking medication in other ways than applied
