Spain had to call in a crane to move a giant sea turtle
What do you do when you see a giant dead sea turtle being hauled up a crane and put into the back of a truck? Take a video and learn more about the incident of course!
The dead giant sea turtle
Earlier this week a dead giant sea turtle washed up on the beach in Calella, Spain. The turtle is actually a leatherback turtle. They’re the largest of all of the turtles, and are one of the deepest-diving reptiles. Leatherback turtles can grow up to seven feet in length, and weigh up to nearly 2,000 pounds. This turtle was seven feet long, and about 440 pounds.
Watch the turtle being hoisted by the crane:
What happened to the turtle
Currently, it is unknown how the turtle died. The body of the turtle is being taken to the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) for an autopsy. Hopefully then we’ll learn

Leatherback turtles turning up dead
It’s incredibly odd that leatherback turtles are turning up dead on beaches in the UK and Spain because these turtles are usually found in South America, in tropical and subtropical waters, neither of which the UK or Spain have. In fact, in the past 2,000 years only about 10 have been spotted in the Mediterranean. These turtles are considered a vulnerable species.
What is killing these leatherback turtles?
The leatherback turtle has no real predators. Sometimes an orca or a great white shark might catch one, but usually they’re left alone. This is another reason why so many washing up dead on beaches is troubling. The most obvious cause is pollution and plastic that’s dumped into the oceans that the turtles mistake for food. Hopefully, the autopsy of this current dead leatherback turtle will give scientists some
I am sure almost all of you have either been to or heard of SeaWorld. Today I am going to tell you about what they do to their orcas that they are trying to hide. I chose this topic after watching a documentary called “Blackfish” that goes into the behind the scenes of how SeaWorld treats its animals. I have since done further research online to prepare for this presentation. This is an important topic because you should know what kind of company you are funding and behaviors you are endorsing when you go on your vacations to this destination. Today I am going to persuade you that SeaWorld is corrupt and maltreats its animals, specifically the orcas. First, I will talk about the specific way the orcas are treated and how it affects them
Shrieks of shock come from the first 5 rows of people as they are doused in water. Tilikum, the 12,000 pound orca who measures in at a whopping 22 feet in length, jumps into the air on command and splashes the crowd who has paid a hefty price to sit and enjoy the show. It was certainly not the first show Tilikum and his trainer, Dawn Brancheau, had done together. To the crowd’s horror though, it would be the last. While going through the routine during their show on February 24, 2010, something seemed to be wrong. Mid-act Tilikum grabbed Dawn’s arm and ponytail and pulled her underneath the water. After having many bones broken and sustaining many life threatening injuries, Dawn was drowned to death by Tilikum in his tank with a live audience
Picture this: you're having a nice weekend at the lake with your family, fishing, swimming, and having an all-around great time. But then you notice that your boat isn't running as well as it should, especially considering you just cleaned it and made sure everything was in perfect condition before leaving your house. Puzzled, you take your boat out of the water to notice that the hull and motor is covered in tiny clam-like creatures, making your pristine white boat look like something that was just drug out of the bottom of the lake. What are these animals that ruined your weekend of fun? They are zebra mussels, and are found in lakes, rivers, and other bodies of freshwater across the U.S. Normally found in Eastern Europe, the first group of this invasive species hitched a ride in the ballast tanks of ocean liners in the 1980s, and quickly spread. Regulations are in place to stop the spread, but removing them from places that have already been infested is tricky. Today we will talk about the damages zebra mussels cause, how this problem is managed, and what you can do to help.
Throughout the animal kingdom, adaptations take place continuously and even the smallest of changes can leave a significant impact. Examples can be seen within any plant or animal. One example would include sea turtles, specifically, the Loggerhead Turtles. These turtles are native to the Indian, Atlantic, and Pacific Oceans as well as the Mediterranean Sea (Deurmit L 2007). They thrive in either temperate or tropical climates and can live in a myriad of biomes (Deurmit L 2007). These biomes include the pelagic, reef, coastal, and brackish water (Deurmit L 2007). Loggerhead turtles are omnivores and can eat anything from insects to aquatic crustaceans, to macro algae (Deurmit L 2007). According to Deurmit (2007) Caretta caretta is classified into Animalia Kingdom, Chordata Phylum, Vertebrata Subphylum, Reptilian Class, Testudines’ Order,
I’m Yukina Yasuda. I'm here to ensure you that the great barrier reef is best icon for Australia.
From a crab to a barnacle, crustaceans are a diverse group of animals that inhabit much of the world. This lesson will explore what it means to be a crustacean and will also provide some example organisms.
As the great Sir David Attenborough would say “The great barrier reef is in grave danger” and everything that comes out of his mouth is in fact a fact.
The green sea turtles have been taken out of the Atlantic Ocean for several years, so now they are an endangered species. Today, the green sea turtles population is growing and in the Florida Refuge they counted up to over 12,000 turtle nests. It is shocking to see how much the refuges care about the green sea turtles. They have been looking out for the turtles for 35 years. It was interesting to find out that these green sea turtles live for a really long time. It takes the turtles 25 years just to mature. This article caught my eye because I love science and animals. Knowing that people are taking care of what used to be endangered animals really means a lot to me. I hate seeing animals hurt or struggling to survive. Because of the refuges
Loggerhead sea turtles, scientifically labeled Carretta carretta, are the most global nesting turtle species and the most abundant in United State’s waters. While they are not nesting, they travel through open ocean water, spending time searching for food and resting on the sea floor. These turtles were nicknamed Loggerheads because of their large heads and strong jaw needed to break the shells of crustaceans. Loggerheads have the largest nesting range of any sea turtle, inhabiting the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans (Spotila, 2004).
They are often found half-buried in the sand, with their upper surface slanting in the direction of the water current. If for some reason the animal is uprooted from its position and they are turned upside down, they are unable to upright themselves back on their dorsal side, they will eventually die because of this. The endoskeleton of them turns a white color and this is the common way people often find them washed ashore. In turn brings on an interesting story that some have concocted on the ledge of the sand dollar, when the animal has died and it is in the dried up state it is said that if you pick it up and shake it you will her rattling.
Place yourself in a fairy tale setting, with trees and singing birds and cute woodland creatures. Now, think of your ideal hero, prince or true love in your fairy tale. You chose someone with external beauty; (you know) muscles, strong chin, or maybe a fair madden. However, the hero of the story I will talk about isn’t exactly handsome, this hero of course is Shrek, the hero of a typical storybook fairytale with a weird and hilarious twist. My purpose is to explain why this Academy-Award winning animated film is better than the “Disney Princess” movies thanks to use of satire, great cast, and its moral messages.
Hundreds of people, who get in the ocean every year, are almost none that encounter sharks. Even if you're lucky enough to see a shark big enough to bite you, you're much likely to die from a heart attack than getting bit by one. Shark attacks are mistakes and the idea of a shark off every beach waiting for people to come in the water is completely untrue. I will inform you on the background knowledge of sharks and the reasons why humans should not be afraid only aware.
Introduction Caretta caretta, otherwise known as the Loggerhead Sea Turtle, is an oceanic turtle that exist throughout the globe. They are circumtropical species (LeBlanc et al. 2014) meaning they are distributed throughout temperate and tropical ocean regions, but most abundant species are found in the United States coastal range. Loggerheads largest nesting aggregations in the Atlantic are found along the southeastern United States coastal range where about 80% of all nesting occurs and 90% of all hatchlings are produced (Abecassis et al. 2013).
They hardly have any predators which makes sense i mean look at the size of those things. In the 1800’s they were hunted almost to the brink of extinction. Now there are about 700,000 of them to date. They can dive to 1550 metres and can hold their breath for 100+ minutes.
The problem I have chosen is the problem of endangered species. An endangered species is a group of organisms that have a risk of becoming extinct. More than 90% of all species that have ever lived on earth has become extinct. Many reasons for this are habitat loss, predators, too few organisms for sustainable reproduction. Habitat loss is the most widespread cause of species endangerment and extinction. Usually, this is happening because of human activity including deforestation and pollution. Pollution and climate change affect the ecosystem, resulting in rise of sea levels, melting of glaciers/ice caps, and pollution can cause death to many seabirds and and marine creatures living on the coast and in the ocean. Rising sea levels can
