Today, I would like to tell you my story. My wife has a genetic disorder called autism. However, we want to be a full family and we want to have children. It is a very hard decision for us as autism is a genetic disease and we are worried that our child will have ASD as well as his mother. Until the present day, the causes of this disease are unknown. The scientific and medical community states that “Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by difficulties in social interaction and communication and by repetitive and stereotyped behaviors.” (Beaudoin, Sébire & Couture, 2014) Autism is typically diagnosed during infancy, however, there are cases, when it has been diagnosed in an adult, after years of normal development. These symptoms are very stressful to see, and they are very hard to avoid or overcome. Today, there is no such medicine, or therapy, which cures autism spectrum disorder. If it has been diagnosed, its symptoms will remain for the whole life. However, using different treatment and therapy combinations autistic symptoms may be reduced significantly and people diagnosed with autism may live in our society, communicate with other people, even attend a job, and have relations, as my wife does. The success of therapy is heavily dependent on how soon the autism was diagnosed. The early diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder allows starting the intervention with a view to developing the social, motor and speech skills of the child. Considering this, the autism awareness should be raised significantly, as most of the people know nothing about it and about the ways to deal with or react to the people who are suffering from ASD. Few people know that April 2 is a World Autism Awareness Day. One of the largest Catholic churches in the world, located in Barcelona, Spain, which is called Sagrada Familia, will light up blue on April 2, 2016, in honor of this day.
The more information about this disorder will be available to the people, the better the understanding and the perception of the autistic people will be in society. It is very hard for a person who has ASD to understand why he/she is different from others and the better people would know how to react to such autistic persons, the better their development would
