The Diary of Anne Frank Summative Assessment Lara Kenyon 03/15/2024 3rd Period The Diary of Anne Frank - Informative Essay During the 1930s-1940s there was heavy discrimination against anti-semitism, segregating them, harming them, and putting them through concentration camps. Those who were defined as Jewish by the German government (You were considered Jewish if you practiced the religion and if one of your grandparents was Jewish). were persecuted by the police. Many people defined as Jews during this time were forced to go into hiding, this was so they could avoid the concentration camps and getting arrested for simply existing. To begin, Anne Frank had gone with her family into a hidden Annex. The plan was for them to stay there until the war was over. They had anticipated that it would only be a couple of months, but they were wrong. At the time, they had to wear a star on their coats to represent they were Jewish. They would not be allowed to go to certain places, speak to certain people, and often be resented by everyone else around them. Though they were not alone, “The Van Pels family followed a week later. The two families already knew each other: Hermann van Pels worked for Otto’s company.” (Annefrank.org) Then additionally a dentist moved in for his protection as well. They had multiple people who helped them with this safety and allowed them to stay there. The people helping were Victor Kugler, Johannes Kleiman, Johan Voskuijl, Bep Voskuijl, Jan Gies, and finally Miep Gies. Miep has been one of the key parts of keeping them safe, and why we know about this today. Miep had been the one who had kept Anne Frank's writings after the families had eventually been caught hiding and taken to camps. She found Anne’s diary and kept it. She began to grow, she was only thirteen years old when she first went into hiding. She stayed there with her family for two years, meaning she was fifteen years old when they were found. During this time she had issues, with boys such as Peter, growing up in an area where she could not get any good social life besides her sister and Peter, it was hard for her. Especially due to her lack of food that she got, when a young woman is growing they need food for it to be healthy for them. She was pale, lacking in sunlight, skinny and lacking in food, and that would damage her greatly. Furthermore, within hiding there was a lot more going on inside. With eight people under the care of the helpers, they had to try and feed all of them. There were many arguments between the two families at times, usually with Anne Frank. She went into hiding right before she reached puberty, and being within a hidden area and not being able to grow socially can stunt how someone acts and matures. She had frequent arguments with her mother, mainly due to her sister Margot being the “golden child” as Anne Frank called her. These ongoing arguments and lack of food and sunlight made
