Anne Frank - Impact on Remembering the Holocaust Between 1941 and 1945, the Holocaust was a horrible period of time when the Nazis killed six million Jews and others they didn't like. Anne Frank, was a young Jewish girl who wrote a diary of her experiences during the Holocaust. Her diary is called “The Diary of a Young Girl”. Born on June 12, 1929, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, Anne started writing in her diary when she was 13 years old, and it was published 2 years after her death in 1947. It helps us understand how bad the Holocaust was and how scared people were. Anne's diary also tells us about her family hiding from the Nazis for two years in the Netherlands. The Nazis were gaining power, which caused lots of problems and hate towards Jewish people. Anne's parents, Otto and Edith Frank, moved to the Netherlands, where Otto started a trading business. However, in May 1940, the Nazis took over the Netherlands, making life harder for Jewish people like Anne. The Nazis made unfair laws that took away the rights of Jewish people, like their access to public spaces and education. The situation worsened when Anne's older sister, Margot, got a letter telling her to work for the Nazis in Germany. In July 1942, the Frank family had to hide in a Secret Annex behind Otto's business on Prinsengracht 263. Anne, her family, and four others, lived in a tiny space, constantly scared that the Nazis would find them. For Anne's thirteenth birthday, she got a diary. She described her diary as a red and white plain diary which she named "Kitty". With this diary, she filled its pages with her thoughts, emotions, and feelings while hiding from the Nazis. Anne found comfort in writing in her diary, from not just jotting down her fears and dreams, but believing in the power of her words to overcome her
