Have you ever rolled your ankle before and been in some extreme pain? Well I’m here to tell you that you could have a much more serious problem than you think on your hands. I would like to share with you how my rolled ankle led to surgery instead of a wrap. The first time that I ever rolled my ankle was at the beginning of my freshman year, I was playing basketball with my friends Gheith, Nawaf and Khalid at lunch like I normally do at lunch when I jumped up to block someone. When I came down, I landed on the side of my foot causing my ankle to just fold over, The right side of my ankle was touching the ground and the left side was sticking straight up in the air. I was in some of the worst pain that I had ever been in ever in my life. James and Ian went to get the nurse and she took me inside. It hurt extremely bad to walk on it or bend it while I was on my way to the nurse’s office. Inside the nurse's office, the nurse told me “An ankle sprain is when the ligament inside the ankle stretches in a way that it's not supposed to.”The next day I went in to the doctor to see if it was broken. He was doing some tests on me to see exactly what was going on in my ankle, he was pulling from different spots and asking me if I felt pain when all of a sudden he pulled a certain spot and my whole ankle popped out of socket. Luckily it went right back into place but when that happened it hurt extremely bad and the doctor said ”That's not supposed to happen”. He had determined the problem.The good news is that we can fix it, the bad news is that it will be a long road to repair properly. Ankle sprains have three degrees of injury ranging from 1-3. The level of the ankle sprain is determined by the amount that the ligament is torn or stretched. A grade one sprain is categorized as a slight stretching and damage to the fibers of the ligament. A grade 2 sprain is characterized as partial tearing of the ligament and abnormal laxity of the ankle. A grade 3 sprain is characterized by complete tear of the ligament if it can be pushed or pulled in certain movements there is gross instability. The movements of the ankle are abduction, adduction, plantar flexion, dorsiflexion, and inversion, eversion. The ligaments of the ankle hold the ankle bones and joint into position. These ligaments protect the ankle joint from abnormal movements such as twisting, turning, and rolling of the foot.

This article is about the results of a survey conducted by three PhD’s; Janet Simon, Matthew Donahue, and Carrie Docherty, and was published by the International Journal of Athletic Therapy and Training. The purpose of the survey was to determine Athletic Trainers current utilization of ankle support, and to determine ATs current attitudes towards the use of ankle taping and bracing. The ACL is a very important ligament in the knee that controls the pivoting motion of the knee. This joint guides the femur and tibia through a regular range of motion. It is the most common and serious of injury sustained to the knee (Duffy, f9). How this injury happens, who is most susceptible, and how it is treated are a few questions athletes are becoming heavily concerned with.
When I went into the doctors, I remember sitting there not thinking I would need more than one surgery and it would be an easy thing to fix. My first doctor was more a back doctor than a leg doctor which he no one seemed to tell me. After my first surgery, I started falling all the time and we did not know what was going on. We called the doctor and he told us to come back in; next realize he is taking more X-rays. I remember he had the coldest hands and when he came in the tell us the news he could look us in the eyes. He told us how he was more a spine doctor and and did not know what to do. We ended up seeing a sport doctor in Appleton that told us that I was bone on bone and my meniscus was gone, which could have been provided if he would not have cut my meniscus in a C-shape but, first cut my femur

Once I could bend my knee again, I started playing sports again. I took a break from basketball, but I kept up with softball and volleyball. My knee didn’t feel quite the same, but I thought that would pass. During my volleyball camp at Olivet Nazarene University, I was jumping up to block and when I landed my knee buckled and I knocked over my friend Christie. I could not believe this happened again! He checked out my knee and thought I had torn my meniscus(the cartilage in the knee joint) and possibly had a small tear in my MCL(the inside tendon of the knee). He insisted that I go to O.A.K. At this moment, I thought that my career in sports was over as I would never come back from the months spent in a boot, unable to participate in any form of physical activity, and the months of therapy that followed, but I persevered and returned to playing condition before too long. My dad explained to me that my femur was broken and that I have to wear a cast until it heals. But something was not right in my leg, I felt it, it still hurt like it was out of place. My dad took me to the doctor and told him that the surgery that was done to me was not right, the bones didn’t connect to each other.
