A medical issue and why it is important to you or your family

According to Google, “Epilepsy is a neurological disorder marked by sudden recurrent episodes of sensory disturbance, loss of consciousness, or convulsions, associated with abnormal electrical activity in the brain.”After studying biology for the past year I have learned that when brain cells are disrupted there is a transient change in the normal functioning of the body. Over 200,000 people suffer from this disease each year. Epilepsy can happen to anyone of all ages. Many people have seen a person suddenly begin to tremor or shake vigorously but not quite understand why this may be happening. This is because of the burst of electrical impulses which triggers the brain and causes a person to have a seizure. As reported by WebMD, “In Idiopathic Generalized Epilepsy there is often a genetic inheritance of this disease and it tends to appear during children between the ages of 5-8. Contained within this disease there are no nervous system abnormalities other than seizures. People of which carry this disease pertain normal intelligence. This type of Epilepsy is usually treated with medication.” On the other hand, Symptomatic Generalized Epilepsy is caused by widespread brain damage. The most common epilepsy would be an injury during birth. There are other neurological problems other than seizures that may also occur such as, brain disease and brain infections. This is the most common type of Epilepsy that begins during adulthood. This type of Epilepsy may be successfully treated with surgery, reported by WebMD.
