According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, over half a million homeless citizens (578,424) lived in United States during 2014. In large cities like Portland, over 4,000 people live in homeless shelters or on the street each night. Obtaining basic amenities like healthcare or medical treatment is often a difficult and tedious process for them. In Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, Dr. Withers provides medical treatment to the homeless, defied the ideas of conventional medicine to started practicing street medicine, and formed Operation Safety Net. For these reasons, Dr. Jim Wither should be the CNN Hero of the year.

Dr. Withers took a stand against the conventional idea medicine and started practicing street medicine. When he started, his sanity was questioned, his career path was in doubt, and he even considered himself an outcast. Still he pursued on, and even influenced several of his students to join his cause. Dr. Wither shows he not going to sit and watch the homeless die, but he is going to do something about it
One might object, that taking a stand against the conventional idea of medicine is heroic. They might believe it is unnecessary when there are plenty of options and places to receive medical care, but this is simply not true. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, medical treatment is often difficult for the homeless to obtain without medical insurance. They often wait and end up causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in emergency room
Statistically, over 670,000 Americans are homeless with a growing number. 48 million people go to bed hungry every night. Although we do provide shelters and opportunities in America, millions of people are homeless worldwide. Even on a more minor level there are still hundreds homeless within hometowns. Everyday we encounter the homeless whether by seeing them holding their personal signs at stoplights, confronts with beggars, or viewing them from afar under bridges. In her essay titled “On Compassion”, writer Barbara Ascher uses rhetorical techniques detailing some of her personal homeless experiences within the city life, Asher does effectively use logos, pathos,
The National Coalition for the Homeless (2006) is the most effective strategy as it seeks to address the problem of homelessness through various means, including volunteer work, advocacy efforts, and contributions. Firstly, the strategy requires people to volunteer their time to work directly with the victims of homelessness in the city to help them meet their immediate needs. People can volunteer their time to work with children in various programs, share hobbies, and help build houses and shelters among others (Miller, Hess, & Orthmann, 2011). This is extremely important and can help victims of homelessness to acquire some of the basic needs they lack.
The biggest reason people are homeless is simply because of poverty. They just can't afford to have a place to live and food in their mouths. As of 2000, 11.3% of the US population lived in poverty.(1) The number of people in extreme poverty has been increasing since 1999, accounting for 39% of people in poverty, and making less than half the amount of income a person considered in poverty makes.(3) With this amount of people living in poverty, it's no wonder why there are so many homeless today. The reason people are in poverty is because of inflation since the 70's, and the loss of affordable housing projects.(4) This accounts for almost all homeless, but there are also other factors that can contribute as well. There are many people with addiction problems that make them homeless. It's not because they are addicted to drugs, because many people live quite well with an addiction problem, but they could be in a hard point financially, and could be driven to the streets because of money issues. The hard part for them is getting off the streets once they're on them. Since so much of their money goes to drugs, most drug addicts can't overcome being homeless once they have been for more than 6 months.(1) Mental illness is also a big issue causing homelessness. Approximately 22% of single white male homeless people are suffering from a severe mental illness.(1) The main reason is because Millions of mental patients were dis-institutionalized in the 50's and 60's, and affordable housing wasn't an issue until the 80's, when many of them were reaching 50 and couldn't work and afford housing. Yet, according to the National Resource Center (NRC) on Homelessness and Mental Illness, 80% of the homeless population is off of the streets within 2 to 3 weeks. The NRC is the only national center specifically focused on the effective organization and delivery of services to the homeless and the mentally ill. It is important to note that the NRC reports 10% of people are homeless for 2 months and only 10% are chronically homeless. This fact shows that many people want to get back to ordinary lives and will work hard to do so, in spite of Awalt’s
Homelessness in the United States has been an important subject that the government needs to turn its attention to. There has been announced in the news that the number of the homeless people in many major cities in the United States has been increasing enormously. According to United States Interagency Council on Homelessness reported that there was an estimation of 83,170 individuals have experienced chronic homelessness on the streets of the United States’ streets and shelters on only a single night of January 2015, which is a small decrease of only 1% from the previous year (People Experiencing Chronic Homelessness, n.d.). The United States must consider this subject that most of the people underestimate it and not pay attention
Many of the homeless may have faced a loss in society such as losing a job, losing a loved one, they may also have drug and alcohol addictions where they lose all their money and then do not have money to pay off their bare necessities. Some homeless may even have a mental illness not knowing how to deal with the world or they may just have been simply psychologically abused and abandoned by their loved
...em to come to the same general conclusion: public health programs for the homeless are not as effective as they could be. Whether it is not providing full attention in the type of service that is provided or a lack of outreach by the programs, a majority of people are not receiving the care they need. Instead of criticizing homeless people for crowding the emergency rooms consider the fact that they typically do not have an easily accessible alternative for medical care. “Systems like the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program have spent the past decades building a public health program that now has helped find insurance for 76% of patients who come through” (Oppenheimer et al., 2010, p.1401). It is important that cities all across the country begin programs that will improve and eventually completely eliminate the health care inaccessibility for the homeless.
Homelessness is a vast predicament in America and around the world. It is severely overlooked as people don’t really think of homelessness as real world problem. However, there have been ways that people have tried to fix the problem. They have come up with homeless shelters, emergency shelters, food banks and soup kitchens. These solutions have limitations though, which will hopefully come to an end.
Homeless young adults have increased health concerns as a result of poor living conditions, malnutrition and reduced development and still rarely have access to health care services. This is not only due to their socioeconomic status but other factors such as the stigmatization surrounding homelessness and the fear of discriminatory attitudes and being judged by health care workers (Haldenby, Berman, & Forchuk, 2007). Other factors that limit access to health care services are transportation and the need to locate food and shelter. Furthermore, the longer a person is living on the streets increases their risk of losing their family physician, therefore, for health care services they rely on walk-in clinics and emergency rooms. As these alternatives are extremely expensive many people only seek medical help when it is the last possible
During my career, I saw a lot of cases indicate that homeless go to hospitals or pharmacies to find a charity or to get help by doctors or pharmacists. Through my Professional working in one of the pharmacies. I faced many of these cases that sick people with low income or homeless, especially in the winter asking for medications against Cough or Flu, through my moral and my profession. I tried to give some donations or humanitarian aid to whom needs. My ethical value is to help people when needed. Hence Beneficence is one of the important qualities that should every doctor or pharmacist that infuses. A smile or handshaking to the homeless can build hope and help to make his day better. Back in Syria I worked with a group of colleagues to collect medications for pressure, diabetes diseases, gave them to the associations that provide medications for the homeless who suffer from such chronic diseases. Thus In my opinion, it 's a right of any person, whatever his circumstances, can get the required treatment and to be treated fully

Mona Counts works in the village of Mt. Morris, Pennsylvania. It is a medically underserved area and a HPSA (health professional shortage area). The town has an extremely poor economic base and majority of Mona’s patient population are poverty level. Mona is not worried about the money and will tell a patient to come in for a check up, regardless of whether or not they have health care. One patient said, “she is old-fashioned, she talks to you and tells you what you nee...
Homeless individuals are known for taking hand outs and they prefer to plead for money rather than to go work for it. People assume most of the the money that is given to homeless people they spend it on drugs and alcohol because of the fact that many homeless people have drug and alcohol addictions. It is not uncommon to come across homeless youth and older homeless population that are known to abuse substances like drugs and alcohol. Because of the fact that homeless people have substance abuse problems, they tend face illnesses and infections. Many hard working Americans ask themselves “why don’t homeless people just get jobs?” The assumption is they are just lazy and unmotivated. Homeless people choose to live the life they live. Everyone goes through problems but not all people take the path homeless people do. The problems homeless people face is not an excuse for them to be helped and maintained by other hard working people. Although homelessness might be a choice to some, no one knows the hardships these people have gone through. Some assume these people are just lazy but in reality a lot of these homeless people have jobs of their own, they just can’t afford housing and a decent life. Everyone has their own opinion on homeless people, but that does not change the fact that one should still serve the homeless. Not because homeless people need help but because we are
Many homeless people do not have access to healthcare and they go many years without seeing a doctor. According to Fitzpatrick, “there is a clear and defined need for healthcare for homeless people and their families.” She is right, it todays society homelessness is just ignored by many people and has became a serious problem. Most of society does not know about the organizations that help the homeless. For example, Fitapatrick believes in a organization called The Opening Doors Project it is a group of nurses and other health professionals that look at substance abuse within the homeless community. Due to not seeing a doctor and the common knowledge of homeless people abusing drugs and alcohol, “homeless people can have complex and multiple health problems” (Who quoted it). Not everyone agrees with Fitzpatrick, “I am convinced that handouts are basically wrongheaded,” says Sherman. She believes giving anything to the homeless will not help change the homeless persons situation (Sherman). Sherman's advice does not make sence, ignoring the problem will not help either and without proper medical care there is no way to improve homeless health which will cause many people to die a unessary death. According to Hopper, “generative forces behind widespread homelessness runs deep and their correction will req...
