If you’ve ever been to a national park, you will probably remember the experience for the rest of your life. But what is it that makes you remember that experience? Is it the sights, or the landmarks, or the history behind the park? Well I believe that Glacier Bay national park in Alaska is the most beautiful because of all of these reasons. The sights are breath taking; the tidewater glaciers are spectacular; and the history behind the park is intriguing. The Grand Canyon is beautiful, but are their kayaking trips or whales in it? Does Yellowstone have a history dating back to the Ice Age?
Early this February the states surrounding the great lakes in the northeast were pounded by lake-effect snow storms. Some areas saw more than four feet of snow. These states are accustomed to lake-effect snow storms, but it has been some time since they last saw one of this magnitude. Some areas saw up to 140 inches in less than twelve days. The storm was accountable for 35 deaths. (msn.com 2007)
Lake effect snow was not a quick discovery compared to other forms of weather. In the 1800’s when there was no satellites or weather radar to track a storm, early day forecasters would have to get observations from spotters across the country and provide a one and two day forecast on the type of weather that may ...
Technology was a lacking factor on that January 12th day of 1888, which did not give those people warning on what was coming their way. Forecasters that were subject to human error did not have access to information that could have been provided by the Army. Certain weather terminology was forbidding to use for the fear that some cities were immune to these storms. During that day of the blizzard there were no advanced warning signs (outside of the temperature dropping) that the worst blizzard was about to occur, technology had not yet reached that point. If on that day or any day, the Army would have made weather a top priority some of those children could have been saved or at home with their families instead of dying alone in the snow. Forecasters could only get weather information the day of or twenty-four hours before. Many of the weather disasters were not accurate, so if there were any weather predictions good or bad, the people had no choice to believe it. Both parties really did not know any more than the
would snow up to depths of eight inches and sometimes it would rain and hail for
The 1906 San Francisco earthquake was one of the largest earthquakes in the United States. Even though it only lasted less than a minute, the damages and aftermath of the earthquake were disastrous. These damages were not just from the earthquake, but also from other hazards that occurred because of it. It also had a huge effect on the people living in San Francisco. Many people, the government, and other countries helped the city of San Francisco with relief goods like food and clothing. The city used up their resources in order to rebuild the city and spent a lot of money. This earthquake also started a scientific revolution about earthquakes and its effects.
The complaints of the purchase of Alaska started to die down after lots of gold and oil was discovered there in 1860 and many immigrants began to travel to Alaska. The population of Alaska increased by 300% after those discoveries, and William Howard Seward made back his loss from the purchase of the territory in the next two years. Now Alaska has a thriving population, and it generates a large amount of income each year. It was a great financial investment for America, and has proven to be a great state. The territory of Alaska was turned into an official state of the United States of America in 1867. (The Alaskans 16)

On January 12, 1888, the Children’s Blizzard hits part of the Northwest Plains. This blizzard is also known as the Schoolchildren’s Blizzard or Schoolhouse Blizzard (Potter). The name is associated with schoolchildren’s because it was mostly children trying to go back home, that froze to death along their way. It was such a beautiful day, just like one of those days someone would have in April, that no one would have suspected such a bitter snowstorm to come. The blizzard came when a cold, arctic wind from Canada met with the winds that came from the south. Everyone, including the kids, were dressed up with short sleeves. Just like how somebody would wear on a hot, spring day. The air from Canada carried heavy snow and harsh winds along with it, causing the hurricane (Blizzard Brings Tragedy to Northwest Plains). The Children’s Blizzard hit both of South and North Dakota (back then in 1888, it was one territory), Nebraska, Minnesota, Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho, causing lots of heartbroken and unexpected deaths (McLeod).

These categories are broken down into different genetics of bear species. The most common bear found in Alaska is the black bear. The black bears are smaller than most bears. They are found in almost all states in the US except Hawaii. Most are found in forest, but some may be found in swamps and mountains. An estimated 100,000 black bears live in Alaska.
The arctic provides plenty of challenges like getting food and staying warm. Getting food was tricky. Usually, they kill a caribou, fish or hunt sea mammals. There is also always the possibility that they will go overboard in their small canoes when hunting. With those heavy jackets it will be harder to swim, and that walrus could be angry and charge.
