The tundra artic plains completely covering most of the earth’s lands north of the coniferous forest belt. The tundra’s ecosystem is very sensitive. It doesn’t have a good ability to restore itself. Controlled by sedge, heath, willow, moss, and lichen. Plains that are pretty much alike, called alpine tundra, occur above the timberline in the high mountains of the world. Even the Antarctic area has a couple of its own arctic regions itself.
The climate of the tundra is characterized by harsh winters. The average temperature in the tundra area is about –27 degrees. But what is even worse are the long night. At nights the lowest temperture recorded was –67.36 degrees. There are even times in the year when the sun doesn’t come up for days. In the tundra we have little snow and even less rainfall. The rainfall is about a quarter inch in a yearly rainfall. Even though the tundra’s winters are long a harsh there summers are the shortest season of all. Do to the terrible weather and climate in the tundra their animals and plant life is very limited.
This artic tundra is mainly formed by permafrost, “a layer of permanently frozen subsoil in the ground. Putting frozen ground and flat landscape stops the drainage of water. As the water is being held up on the surface it makes ponds and bogs that give moisture for the plants, or countering the low precipitation. “The periodic freezing and thawing of the soil forms cracks in the ground in regularly patterned polygons”. Some areas are not drained very well causing irregular landforms. Some of these landforms like the following hummocks, or knolls, frost boils, and earth stripes. Another common area to the alpine tundra is a “bare rock covered ground” also known as fell fields, in which not alone support but helps the growth of lichens. The many “microhabitats” given by these landforms provide a variety to the tundra’s landscape.
As you already know the amount of different plant species in the tundra is very few. Also their growth level is low, “with most of the biomass concentrated in the roots. To add to the many difficulties the growing season isn’t very long its self. The plants are better off “to reproduce vegetative by division and budding than sexually by flower pollination”. The main plant life in that area is cotton grass, sedge, and dwarf heath also including mosses and lichens.

Due to the moderating effect, this ecozone has long, mild summers (18 to 22°C) and cool, short winters (-3 to -12°C), with around 720 to 1000mm of precipitation, and 180 to 260 growing days annually. The Westerlies can also alter the weather quickly in this ecozone.
Vegetation in the Hudson Plains mostly follows latitude patterns, because of the flat nature of the land. The Hudson Plains are a merge of boreal forest and tundra. Trees are few and far between, denser in the southern, wetter area of the ecozone. In this wetter area, the variety of plants includes: tussocks of sedge, cottongrass, sphagnum moss, dwarf birch, willow shrubs, white spruce, black spruce, larch, balsam, poplar, tamarack, and Jack Pine. In the drier area, vegetation is shrubby and low-lying. It includes Lapland rosebay, crowberry, blueberry, cloudberry, reindeer moss, caribou lichen, and herbs such as arctic aven, purple saxifrage, prickly saxifrage, and lousewort.
The vegetation is mostly trees. There are many types of trees, Some of the trees are coniferous trees and deciduous. It is all scattered in the southern part of the Canadian Shield. The forests are all mixed with birch trees, aspen trees, tamarisk trees, black and white spruce trees, willow trees, hemlock trees, pine trees and balsam fir trees. The mixed forests are beautiful in the fall when the leaves of the deciduous trees change color.
The glaciers have been through a minimum of four glacial periods. They’ve been through the Little Ice age, which commenced around 4,000 years ago. Marks of retreating glacier ice are seen in the rock-strewn and sculpted peaks valleys. The land and bodies of water that the retreating ice has created a new display of animal and plant communities.
The Arctic conditions are extreme; they consist of sub-zero temperatures, heavy snow, strong winds and ice. To survive these conditions animals must keep a constant body temperature to maintain the optimum temperature for essential chemical reactions to take place. If a living cell cools to a temperature below 0°C then ice crystals can form which will puncture the cell membrane causing the cell to burst. If a living cell reaches temperatures above 45°C then the proteins (including enzymes) are denatured; therefore no longer work. This means that the thermal limits for life are 0-45°C. Animals must regulate their body temperatures' between these bounds to survive. Mammals and birds stay closer to the upper bound.
The arctic fox or the Vulpes Lagopus is a very beautiful and majestic animal with many interesting features. This animal can survive extremely frigid arctic temperatures that can drop as low as -50°F. The arctic fox is a very resilient animal. It has furry soles, short ears, and a short muzzle, which are the essentials of what is needed for the animals to adapt to the chilly climate. These foxes usually live in burrows and in emergencies like snowstorms, strong winds or animal conflict, they may tunnel into the snow and create a shelter for them. They have a beautiful white coat that protects them from the hardy weather. Amusingly, when the season changes, the fox changes its coat color making it a unique animal. In winter, their coat is white where as in summer its turns into an orange-red color. This is mostly because it helps them camouflage in the surrounding. These colorings help foxes to effectively hunt rodents, birds, fish and even baby polar bear cubs. But in winter prey can be scarce on the ground. At such times, these animals eat the left over kill of the polar bear. These foxes will also eat berries when they are available. Its coat has been known for its strange adapting qualities, it is a rarity in science today and therefore is highly researched. Not only does it have a thick coat that helps them camouflage and protects them from the cold, but also has the ability to run extremely fast. It is known to be one of the fastest animals in the arctic region.
The Alaskan moose are located between 60 and 70 degrees latitude in Alaska and Western Yukon. They reside in boreal forests which is an area “dominated by coniferous forests, particularly spruce, interspersed with vast wetlands, mostly bogs and fens”. and mixed woodlands which consist of both coniferous and deciduous trees where there are many fallen trees and much debris. This region receives very harsh winters, the ground is covered with snow and temperatures fall as low as −60 °F or -51.1 °C and so by early spring food is very scarce. As the warmer temperatures of late spring and summer arrive food becomes plentiful as shoots, grass and leaves begin to grow. Summer temperatures can reach as high as 90 °F or 34 °C, while precipitation in this region can range from 10 inches to 100 inches of rain per year. This mostly comes in the form of snow.

There are two major tundra biomes: the Artic Tundra and the Alpine Tundra. The Artic tundra is located around the north-pole in the northern hemisphere. This biome has temperatures of about 36 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer and about -30 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter. Bogs and ponds are common as a result of constantly frozen surface moisture and melted permafrost. As a result of these extreme conditions, tundra animals develop adaptations to survive the harsh environments. Plants in the Artic Tundra are short and grow closely to each other. Examples include mosses, heaths and lichen. They are adapted to perform photosynthesis even in the freezing conditions. In some parts it can be up to 180 days. This is only found in the more southern part of the tundra. The Arctic region is home to a variety of valuable animals and plants, including polar bear, seal, and so on. The ecosystem of the Arctic region is fragile because these animals are evolved to live in extreme conditions. With the climate change, many animals are endangered. Ice is the habitat of polar animals because they have to rely on sea ices for resting, food, and reproduction. With the climate change and the decrease of sea ice, the number of polar animals is decreasing and their health is threatened. For example, the average weight of female polar bears in 1980 was about 650 pounds, but the number reduced to about 500 pounds in 2004 (Djoghlaf 15). The earlier breakup and later condensation of sea ice shortens the hunting season of polar bears. Polar bears mainly feed on seals that indwell icy land. The melting ice reduces the number of seals and food intake of polar bears. In addition, polar bears are used to living in ice caves. The rising temperature causes the collapse of ice caves, which can kill baby bears. The climate change is negatively affecting the biodiversity in the region and will definitely harm the ecosystem
