Have you ever had surgery? What about brain surgery? Have you had more surgeries than you can count on both hands? All of these questions I can answer with a confident “Yes!”. My life has been an amazing ride, full of ups, downs, and nights in the ICU. On the surface, other than a few scars, I look just like anyone else. In reality, I’m one of a kind. As many have said to me countless times before, it’s amazing to see how I could go through so much and still be so persevering. I was born three months premature, weighing only three pounds. Because of prematurity, I developed Hydrocephalus, a condition where spinal fluid in the brain doesn’t drain at all. Around the same age, I had so much pressure building up on my brain/eyes that my eyes went crossed for a short period of time. Uncommon and unexpected, this terrified everyone. I was lucky enough to not need surgery for the next twelve years. 2014 started a marathon of surgeries that would not let up until 2016. One in eighth grade. Three in ninth. Five in tenth. For this on-and-off period, I basically lived in the hospital. As soon my Mom and I would arrive, we would set up our room and prepare to stay, not knowing how long we’d be there. The longest I’ve stayed was two weeks. I turned sixteen the day of one of my most recent surgeries. I had to have another shunt implanted, this time on the left side of my head. The amount of surgery I had in such a short period of time eventually caused short-term memory loss. Since then, I’ve woken up twice on school days with the realization that I remembered absolutely nothing from the day before. Not even going to school. Luckily, I’m only occasionally forgetful, although I do have “bad days”. This won’t hold me back though. These surgical scars remind me where I’ve been, and my dreams remind me where I’m
