Some people would say that Arnold Schwarzenegger has been an influential person. Others would call him a sham and opportunist who was obsessed with power. Do I think he is an influential person? I am confident when I say he should be in the top 100 list for the most influential people in American history. Schwarzenegger lived the dream that anyone would want to experience, he was a professional athlete, became an actor and then a governor. Writer and bodybuilder Anthony Church said “ This champion would soon have one of the greatest influences over the bodybuilding and fitness community of all time and help change the society in which he lived, and in which we exist today.” At the age of 15, Arnold Schwarzenegger was a skinny boy weighing …show more content…
“Participating in the competition meant so much to me that I didn’t carefully think through the consequences.” He ended up serving 7-days in the big house for that decision. In 1968 Schwarzenegger came to America with $20 in his pocket and could barely speak English. He was determined to be successful. In that year he would win the IFBB Mr. International, start up a mail order business and gain sponsorship from Joe Weider. Up until the early 1970’s bodybuilding was viewed as an odd sport. He did much to change the perception of bodybuilding and helped to spark a generation of fitness and lifting. A long time friend, Delbert Hickman said, “Arnold was instrumental in bringing bodybuilding to the “mainstream. Once Arnold arrived on the scene, bodybuilding became a quintessential sport and, as a result, attracted multitudes of dedicated, committed and tenacious athletes.” He put bodybuilding on the map and in the eyes of the public and made it a respected sport. He was criticized when Schwarzenegger admitted to using performance-enhancing steroids while they were legal, writing in 1977 that "steroids were helpful to me in maintaining muscle size while on a strict diet in preparation for a contest. I did not use them for muscle growth, but rather for muscle maintenance when …show more content…
Having an affair and child with their live in nanny. You don’t see much of Schwarzenegger in the public eye anymore, although he does spend time writing and stands as one of America’s highest-profile environmental activists. He also helped to make thousands of government buildings energy friendly and built some of the state’s first hydrogen-fueling stations. Being who he was, Schwarzenegger felt the need to set up physical education programs for all of the schools in California. He is quoted saying “Expect to train hard, and over time our hard work will pay off in
In the novel, he shows toughness, courageousness, and the ability to overcome obstacles. Arnold shows these three components by writing comics and playing on the high school basketball team. He uses these traits to be the person he is in the book. Arnold proves that even when the odds may be against you, you can still fight for what you
As Benedict Arnold grew he was a “Dare Devil” said a local resident in 1751. There is a well know story about Benedict Arnold from when he was waiting in line at a local mill waiting to have his corn ground into cornmeal. He grew very interested in the wheel outside the mill and jumped on it and rode it then he became submerged for a few seconds and then reappeared and this was the start of Arnold’s adventurous life.
Benedict Arnold was born on January 14, 1741 in Norwich, Connecticut to wealthy merchants. When the family business went down due to his father’s drinking problem, Arnold had to drop out of school at age fourteen. Arnold was sent away to learn to become a shop apprentice. When he was twenty-one, Arnold completed his apprenticeship and went to New Haven, Connecticut to open his own drugstore. He soon sunk into debt and was forced to close his store. Then, he became a sea captain for the next ten years. He bought three ships and launched a trading business, trading horses from Canada for rum and molasses in the West Indies. He was eventually able to reopen his store in New Haven and became a member of the New Haven Masonic Lodge. However, British laws began placing heavy taxes on the colonists in order to pay for the colonial war. As a result, Arnold, like many other merchants, began smuggling goods on his sh...
something to his body and he did enhance his body using steroids, the most controversial drug in
He was a trusted confidante of General Washington. West Point was itself to become an American icon. These circumstances have rightly earned Arnold his infamy. What is new about Arnold is contextual: he is a traitor to a republic, at a time when revolutionary zeal insisted on the demonstration of republican virtues. Arnold had betrayed the republic and American citizenry, In addition, Arnolds teacher exposed a weakness in the republic plan. If one of the heroes of 1775 could turn from virtue to treason, how strong were the ordinary American citizen? Given this awareness, it became all the more critical to condemn Arnold’s offence, in order to fortify oneself against similar temptation. (Weeks
An influential person has a great impact on someone or something through their actions and legacy. Charlemagne was a Frankish king who encouraged arts, culture, and education, and greatly influenced the development of the Western culture. If he had not lived the Frankish people would not be as sophisticated as they are today (Charlemagne).
He is a man of great stature. A bodybuilder, an actor and the governor of California. He has proven time and time again that to be the best, it takes hard work. This is a lot of what he bases his USC Commencement Address on. In the speech itself he focuses on what he likes to call “Dr. Schwarzenegger’s six rules of success. These rules include: 1) Trust yourself, 2) Break some rules, 3) Don’t be afraid to fail, 4) Ignore the naysayers, 5) Work like hell, 6) Give something back. His first rule is to believe in yourself. He says no matter what your parents, your teachers, your role models or whatever anyone else says, you need to believe in your own vision. His second rule is fairly ironic. He uses humor by saying that rule number two is to break the rules. All people in this world do the exact same thing so he believes you must break them. You must be an outlier. The people who get remembered in the future are never the ones who played it safe. It is always the people who are a little bit crazy who get noticed, the people who are
What makes a person influential? Influential people make positive changes for others, are leaders, and set good examples for people to follow. Helen Keller is considered one of the most influential people because even though she had a disability and had to learn to work through it, she later became determined to learn about the world and she wanted to help improve the lives for others. Helen Keller once said “I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do” (Keller). For example, she decided to teach the blind to be courageous and to make their lives successful, diligent, and significant for others and for themselves.
This was such an important event in the American Revolution that one of his solider would later write that he was “the very genius of war.” In fact, the enemy also held this viewpoint, for it was British General Johnny Burgoyne who said that it was because of Arnold that he surrendered.
Anabolic steroids are a group of muscle building chemicals, which are synthetic versions of the male hormone, testosterone. Developed in the 1930’s, they were prescribed to aid in muscle tissue repair by those who had undergone surgery or had degenerative diseases. Now the patients do not only use them but also athletes. Starting in the 1940’s steroids were introduced into sports. Steroids were one of the main reasons that Russia’s 1952 Olympic weightlifting team came out with pile of medals. With these results other nations thought their competitors should have the same advantage, and the use of steroids spread like wildfire.(NIDA pg 2) But now steroids are illegal to use if not prescribed by a physician, and have been banned by nearly all-athletic organizations, both professional and amateur.
In conclusion, Abraham Lincoln is definitely the top most influential leader of all time. He legally freed all slaves in America. He displayed many leadership qualities, which included perseverance and faith. He always thought in the shoes of others and also influenced others in a magnificent way. Abraham Lincoln should undoubtedly be at the top of your most influential leaders of all time
Abstract: Since the beginning of sports competition, athletes have always looked for some kind of an edge over their competitors. They will do whatever it takes to be one of the elite and that includes injecting supplements into their bodies to make them bigger, stronger, and faster. Steroid use is probably one of the most common drug misuses in sports competition. Athletes found that with anabolic steroids one could become a better athlete twice as fast. Not until 1975 was the drug first banned from Olympic competition because of the health risks it produced. Shortly thereafter, the rest of the sports world did not allow anabolic steroids as well. With the use of steroids no longer permitted athletes began to look for other alternatives. On the rise is two substances called creatine and androstenedione, both of which are sold over the counter. These two performance enhancers have only had minimal testing done on them, excluding the long-term effects, simply because they haven't been around long enough. Creatine and androstenedione have been said to produce results like steroids without the side effects. The truth is they do produce side effects and irregular muscle growth. By banning the use of performance enhancing drugs, just like steroids, sports competition will have a much healthier and fairer environment to participate in.
People define being influential as having someone or something looking up to you. Another way people define being influential is having control over something. Influence can be used in many ways, it can be used to make you buy something, or it can make you think different, it can also be used to help encourage people. Most of the time famous people are influential to the lower tier an example would be a professional baseball player would be a big influence to someone who is just starting out, or an popular actor influential too. Although some people say that having much influence is bad because it can make you become greedy with power but, Stan Lee proves that wrong by using his influence to help to other people in his life. He also worked very hard to show to everyone else how badly he wanted to make his dream come true. His dedication to his career proves to be a great reason for being influential. He changed the way people looked at comics and how they were created. He built his personality into the comics he created so that he knows that whoever was reading them would get enjoyment from them. Although he faced a lot of hardships and criticisms in his life Stan Lee deserves to be in the top 100 influential people because he used his vision to see others and himself improve in their knowledge throughout life, while revolutionizing the comic industry giving the world an abundance of content to enjoy and giving back to the people in every way possible.
Steroids became an option to athletes in the Olympics and other major sporting events during the 1950’s. But this use of steroids among athletes only became widely apparent when Canadian sprint runner Ben Johnson tested positive for steroid use after winning the gold medal for the one hundred-meter dash during the 1988 Olympics (Francis, 45). Now a skinny fifteen-year-old can just walk down to the local gym and find people who either sell or know how to get in contact with those who sell the drug that will make him envious of his friends. Steroids are an attractive drug. While steroids seem harmless to the unaware user, they can have a risky effect. Most of the time whether the users are new or experienced, they do not know the dangerous consequences steroids can have on their bodies and their minds. Though steroids cause a relatively insignificant number of deaths in our society, the banning of steroids is justified because steroids have a lot of side effects not known to the uninformed user.
Bodybuilding emerged in the late 1800s and early 1900s made popular by a man named Eugene Sandow, who was also considered the first bodybuilder. Most people have only heard the name Sandow when talking about the famous Sandow trophy which is won at the Mr. Olympia, the most elite bodybuilding competition held once a year in the fall. A name people do recognize is Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is known for having one of the greatest bodybuilding physiques of all time. Arnold was also considered the face of bodybuilding back in his prime and was a huge ambassador of the sport. Arnold first got into bodybuilding at the age of fifteen. Arnold's parents weren't too fond of his new hobby, mainly because his father was a strict police officer in a small town in Austria, and bodybuilding was unheard of there. But it wasn't until 1966 were Arnold first came into the international bodybuilding scene. His first big international...
