Herland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is a novel that describes a secluded civilization composed only by women. These women reproduce by Ehenogenesis, which means to reproduce without the fertilization. Herland was being reissued because it is believed that the 21st century may learn something about the themes of this novel. For instance, it describes how women were in the highest position in politics and were the only contributors to this successful civilization. Therefore, without them their society would be ruined. In this socialist economy, the government controls the business, industry, and economic activity on behalf of the people. Socialism attracts the proposes to replace a social structure based on competitions and individualism with one that is based on community and cooperation. Because Herland was so isolated and was extremely depended on the women to thrive, the community members would put the community’s needs before their own. Herland unlike the United States, where the three men were from, was more like a family rather than a state. The women were happy to sacrifice things for the greater good. They had shared farming in the forest and common education of the young therefore you can see that the women of Herland are organized around the principle that work and reward are to be shared by all to be able to benefit the most number of women. Herland society is consequently highly efficient. The community confronts internal problems without favoritism, individual ambition, or family feeling to interfere with reaching the most coherent solution. A perfect example of the rational society was the way the women calmly fixed and controlled the population. One of the women explains, that “…Often our young women, those to whom motherhood had not yet come, would voluntarily defer it… by the direct care and service of the babies we already had” (59). Although women would have wanted to have more than one child they were limited and some forbidden to reproduce due to their bad qualities. Van sees his own society as a combination of competitions with one another and the oppression of the female. As we can see here, Herland had a splendid way of dealing this its issues and its structure was tremendously thought out. During The Second Great Awakening, the legal rights of men and women were greatly influenced by gender and race. Paul Johnson and Simon Wilentz’s book, The Kingdom of Matthias, describes the life of two young women, Isabella Van Wagenen and Isabella Matthews Laisdell, both of whom men’s power effected. During the nineteenth century, men were the “backbone” of the family; the men made the money, supported, and provided for the family. Throughout the era, women were nothing more than housewives. A woman’s daily job was to cook, clean, and care for the children. The views of motherhood changed over time as the mothers began bearing fewer children. This alteration was made with the intentions of showing each child more attention with the hopes that the family would rise in social standard and class. There are extreme cases of women's social and spiritual roles changing in The Kingdom of Matthias (Kelly, Dustin). The rising market shaped the rights and freedoms of the women in society. Matthias thought that the increasing rights of women degraded his rights as a man and as a laborer (Fiorini, 3/27).
This argument is supported by the unique position of the narrator they are not an “’objective’ observer” but instead “She is an entrapped cinematographer” (8). The narrator portrays a world through a biased voice making it seem that much more splendid and magnificent. After finishing the description of the utopia, the narrator switches to first person and begins asking questions directed at the audience about the town. These questions “pose real ethical, linguistic, and perceptual problems involved in describing and conceptualizing utopia during the last 20th century” (Roemer 8). By allowing the audience to build the town the narrator allows for the “justification for the brevity and vagueness of the narrative” (Roemer 10). The narrator is made to look even more unreliable by her word choice and “admits her ignorance about many aspects of the Omelas system” (Roemer 10). By using this kind of narrative voice the story becomes more believable and offers a change from previous utopian works it is not offers “a memorable encounter with a modern utopian text” but also causes the audience to become part of “the creation of utopias that may involve unexpected moral responsibilities” (Roemer
The women in this novel are fairly passive and tend to let the men manipulate them. According to Martha Duffy, Smiley sees a link between the exploitation of women and that of the land. The land is stronger than the women in this novel in that despite the fact that men manipulate and attempt to change it as much as possible, it is still its own entity. Women were not allowed to go anywhere in public without an escort, they could not hold a position in office let allow vote, and they could only learn the basics of education (reading, writing, and arithmetic). In law the children belonged to the husband and so did the wife’s property and money. The only job women could think about having was being a ‘governess’ which would give other women education.
The novel is described as a feminist novel. Yet, this is not exactly acurate. The absence of men in the utopian society may seem extreme to some, and it is. This is how Gilman makes her point. She does not create a world without men because men are terrible creatures who have corrupted the world. The utopia which lacks men is a clean peaceful place, which surpasses in almost every way the competitive societies that we live in. But, it is neither the absence of men nor the presence of women that makes this to be the case. Gender, in this novel, is symbolic for the most part. Gilman does separate the two genders to destroy stereo types, but also to establish a concrete difference between the two worlds. The male world is not bad, and the female good is not good. The world in which people are defined by others and limited is bad, while the world in which people are free to grow without being defined or compared to others, and are able to see the unity of all people is good. Comparing Herland to the real world, Gilman begins destroying gender based stereotypes. Because there are no distinctions of gender in Herland, nor any superficial characteristics which accompany gender, Herland women take on the roles of all people without considering any limitations. These women are strong, agile, nurturing, intelligent, cooperative, and able to rely on themselves. They are not "typical" females. As Gilman explains through the male character Van, "Those 'feminine charms' we are so fond of are not feminine at all, but mere reflected masculinity developed to please us because they had to please us, and in no way essential to the real fulfillment of their great process" (p59). In the same way, stereotypes about men can be thrown up as well. Gilman shows the reader that if people stop basing their identities on what others want, they will no longer be slaves to limitations. They will be free to discover their true selves and will allow others to do the same. Gilman shows readers that men and women are distinct people, but reminds us that they are people first. This can be seen when one of women of Herland named Somel, questions the men by saying, "But surely there are characteristics enough which belong to People, aren't there?
From the beginning of this work, the woman is shown to have gone mad. We are given no insight into the past, and we do not know why she has been driven to the brink of insanity. The “beautiful…English place” that the woman sees in her minds eye is the way men have traditionally wanted women to see their role in society. As the woman says, “It is quite alone standing well back from the road…It makes me think of English places…for there are hedges and walls and gates that lock, and lots of separate little houses for the gardeners and people. There is a delicious garden! I never saw such a garden—large and shady, full of box-bordered paths, and lined with long grape-covered arbors with seats under them.” This lovely English countryside picture that this woman paints to the reader is a shallow view at the real likeness of her prison. The reality of things is that this lovely place is her small living space, and in it she is to function as every other good housewife should. The description of her cell, versus the reality of it, is a very good example of the restriction women had in those days. They were free to see things as they wanted, but there was no real chance at a woman changing her roles and place in society. This is mostly attributed to the small amount of freedom women had, and therefore they could not bring about a drastic change, because men were happy with the position women filled.
Women “were expected to bear children, stay home, cook and clean, and take care of the children” (Cobb 29). They were expected to be weak, timid, domestic, emotional, dependent, and pure. Women were taught to be physically and emotionally inferior in addition morally superior to men. During this time, women were ostracized for expressing characteristics and wants that contradicted those ideals. In certain nation’s women have more or less power than women in other nations, but none equal to the power that women have in America today.
Margaret Cavendish’s Blazing World qualifies as both a precursor to science fiction and an exploration of utopian literature. Cavendish redefines customary representations of women through challenging the boundaries of gender whilst eradicating conventions of the genre. In her essay Gender, Genre, and the Utopian Body, author Marina Leslie suggests that Cavendish realigns three of the dominant modes of discourse which are employed in the representation of women in literature; misogynistic narratives of women-on-top, literary conventions of romance and finally the evolving textual practices of philosophy.
Throughout her life Gilman lectured, and created a body of the work which is to this day used to herald the feminist movement. In 1915 Gilman wrote “Herland” a novel which paints the picture of a utopian society of “women who worked cooperatively.” (Radcliffe Institute, 2017) Gilman was labeled as a woman of a weak constitution, but yet she went on to fight some the hardest battles anyone could ever face. She fought her whole life against gender equality, marital norms, depression, and in the end even cancer. She chose use her own death to illustrate how taking one’s own life is no more of sin than leaving a party early.
