On chapter 4 on the textbook, the author explains, “culture provides a member of a society with a common bond, a sense that we see certain facets of society in similar ways. We are living together at all depends on the fact that members of a society share a certain amount of cultural knowledge (Ch4, 132). Individualism and collectivism contribute greatly to the dimension of culture. For example, how many members of the culture define themselves apart from their group memberships. In individualist cultures, people are expected to develop and display their individual personalities and to choose their own affiliations. In collectivist cultures, people are defined and act mostly as a member of a long-term group, such as the family, a religious group, an age cohort, a town, or a profession, among others. This dimension was found to move towards the individualist end of the spectrum with increasing …show more content…
However, they seem to take the ugliness of the body to a whole new extreme. Their fascination with the mouth is extremely interesting. Today, we don’t necessarily see the mouth as an evil device, but more as a tool for communication. The relationship between oral and moral characteristics is an interesting way to see the world. When I was young, I had a lot of cavities and I can say that I wasn’t not impress with my dentist. The Nacirema seems to read a lot into things that are just repercussions of a life lived. The medicine men or witchcraft as they refer him seem to be taking extreme advantage of the people he is supposed to be taking care of. They seem to be out for more selfish pursuits as opposed to sincerely helping the
Consider how the natural development of narrative techniques in George Orwell’s 1984 creates a theme of individualism verses state. What was the point in writing such an obvious theme, since a dystopia is the prime example of an imperfect world? He uses extremely well-developed techniques to demonstrate the dystopian society. Specifically, Orwell uses symbols as well as the setting to thoroughly contribute to the idea of a totalitarian state in his dystopian society; the ideas are in symbolic objects, themes, and characters. Orwell clearly suggests that are flaws in the world that he has created, and, more importantly, Orwell the possibility of the characteristics becoming reality.
The next communication gap concerns with the individualism- collectivism dimension, which is the degree an individual is integrated into groups in a society (Hofstede, 2001). Individualistic cultures like the U.S put a strong emphasis on individual autonomy and independence, whereas collectivist cultures like Vietnam believe in belonging, obligation
From all the three distinct characterized political subcultures the moralistic political subculture, individual political subculture and traditionalistic political subculture I believe that Houston is both individualistic and traditionalisticpolitical subculture. There many reasons that pushed me to that conclusion, some of these reasons are crystal clear if you are walking in Houston down town you would see all of things that do not add up together meaning seeing a Latino or Hispanic restaurants next to a complex apartment building by itself or a club next to a complex building, or even a dentist next to a bar therefore Houston in known for its lake of zoning. Also in old neighborhoods many of the residents set up a town meeting to decide
A totalitarian government relates to a centralized government that does not tolerate parties of differing opinion and that exercises dictatorial control over many aspects of life. In George Orwell’s 1984, the government controls all aspect of the lives of the citizens in Oceania, taking away all individuality. When a totalitarian government gains power, they tend to try and hold onto it with a deathgrip. When a government is given that much power, there is not many things you can do as a citizen, other than sit back and hope for the best. In the novel Nineteen Eighty Four, George Orwell uses the two minutes hate and telescreens to show the importance of keeping your individuality.
In reading one, Body Rituals Among the Nacirema, since this is my second time reading this article this year I have a clear understanding of what the Nacirema tribe believes to be deviant and how they seek to get the deviance out of their daily lives. This community believes that their bodies are deviant, hence men and women would visit a godly like medicine man to perform what we would consider as deviant medical

Hypothesis: “We hypothesize that the performance of individual members in such situations is likely to be highest when the members hold both individualist and collectivist orientations toward their work” (Hollenbeck, Humphrey, Meyer, Wagner, 2012, pg. 947).
The idea of Individualism can be traced all the way back to England before America’s existence. As we know, individualism has been interpreted in many forms throughout history. The 19th century is no different, taking hold of its own idea of individualism, called transcendentalism. Transcendentalism suggests freedom should not be confined to those focused on money and superficial gains. Instead, people should depend on no one but themselves. This movement focused on “greater individualism against conformity” (Corbett et al.). Heavily influenced by the Romantic period, transcendentalism adopted the belief that reason was more important than logic as Benjamin Franklin has believed. Reason must also include unique emotion and spirit (Corbett et
Finally, the rituals and beliefs regarding the human mouth are extreme, in my opinion. The article sums up the mouth rituals stating, “preponderantly masochistic people have developed sadistic specialist” (Miner, 1956). In my opinion, Miner was right in stating that the Nacirema people are masochistic. The descriptions of the mouth-practices are shocking, and raise the question of why anyone would want to have such painful procedures done. From an anthropological standpoint, it’s hard to grasp the thoughts behind the procedures since pain and injury are not conducive to fostering a healthy and thriving culture. The Nacirema people and their rituals are fascinating and deserving of greater study.
According to (Hofstede, Hofstede, & Minkov, 2010) described that the culture can be defined as it is made up of “thinking, feeling, and potential acting” that all people carry within themselves, which he terms as “mental programs.” Likewise, after did a large number of research, Hofstede decided to divide cultural differences into five dimensions, they are power distance, Individualism vs. Collectivism, uncertainty avoidance, Masculinity vs. Femininity and long-term vs. short-term orientation respectively. Putting more details into these five
In recent years, more and more social networking websites are designed and developed to facilitate human communication and development of self-image. People can use their smartphones to get access to some social networking applications. Those technologies enable the human to communicate instantly almost everywhere in the world and add special effects to the sharing photos enhance the emotion they want to express. These change the ways they express themselves and satisfy their needs. This essay will argue that social networking websites are intrinsically good for the development of expressive individualism and help to achieve a good and fulfilling life because these technologies help people to obtain happiness by easily expressing themselves
Our society as an entire hemisphere has been based on the ancient idea of democracy, and for democracy to work the citizens need to be involved. The source shows the opinion of someone that believes that citizens should not be involved in the government. In other words the source tells us that this person would like citizens to be unable to make crucial decisions and leave those jobs to the one’s that know what they are doing. The ideological perspective in this source is fascist because the opinion states that the government should have complete control while the citizens have little to none which is similar to fascism in the way that the citizens are not allowed to disagree with the government and the government would have complete authority over the people. The source therefore has a primarily collectivist perspective. The principles of liberalism that are implied are 3, 4, and 5. Principle #3 and 4 is implied because the source is sharing a view which is the opposite of what principle #3 and 4 expresses. Principle #5 is implied because it states that the government has a responsibility to the people in their most vulnerable state, while the source does not
Would you give into temptation or would you do your own thing? Being an individual is being single or separate from others. Following the crowd means going along with the majority or doing what others are doing. Being an individual is more important than following the crowd.
In the end, what we learn from this article is very realistic and logical. Furthermore, it is supported with real-life examples. Culture is ordinary, each individual has it, and it is both individual and common. It’s a result of both traditional values and an individual effort. Therefore, trying to fit it into certain sharp-edged models would be wrong.
