Courage is not when you don’t fear, its more of deciding that here are far more better things than fear. In the Crucible, the ones that have been accused have to decide whether to lie in fear or be courageous by telling the truth which would result in being hanged. Many characters went their own way by following what they believe which would be what the bible says. When they stuck out and went their own way in telling the real truth, the community started to look down on individuals and everything got hectic. Reverend Parris has many enemies because he is very self-centered. He is always worried about what his reputation is. As the town's Reverend, it is his job to encourage people to be religious and be people of God. “I have fought here three long years to bend these stiff-necked people to me, and now, just now when good respect is rising for me in the parish, you compromise my very character” (Miller 889). In this quote he is talking to Abigail Williams about how he is finally getting people in Salem to listen to him and how she is going to ruin it. He is so revolved around his reputation that he doesn’t really care if witchery is spreading around Salem. He just wants to have a better reputation than anyone else. Those who get accused aren’t really cared for by him. For example, his daughter was so called bewitched and Parris didn’t show much concern because that wasn’t his main focus. Most people in Salem believed those who confessed to witchery but there was a select few that did not. The individual known as Reverend Hale was one of the few. “Excellency, I have signed seventy-two death warrants; I am a minister of the Lord, and I dare not to take a life without there be a proof so immaculate no slightest qualm of conscience may doubt it” (942). Throughout the story, Reverend Parris is shown to be on edge when he speaks, often because he is afraid of what others might think, say, or do to him. An example of this is when Parris is speaking with Abigail and says, “But if you trafficked with spirits in the forest I must know it now, for surely my enemies will, and they will ruin me with it” (Page 10, Miller). This shows how Reverend Parris is afraid of what his enemies will do to him and his reputation. On page 14, Parris is shown to again be very frightful, as he says, “They will howl me out of Salem for such corruption in my house” (Page 14, Miller). He jumps to conclusions and assumes the worst that he will be thrown out of Salem, which characterizes him as fearful.
In the beginning of scene 1, we notice him positioned at his daughter (Betty) sick bed. Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible as a protest paper to the brutality of the Red Scare .The Red Scare was the inoperable fear of Communism within the United States. This scare was caused as a result of the Cold War in the 1950’s. During the Cold War the US was scared of an attack of the Soviets, and the Soviets were equally as scared of an attack upon them by us. Joseph McCarthy, a Senator from Wisconsin, saw this fear as an opportunity to rise to power. McCarthy had many supporters that were primarily Republicans, Catholics, Conservative Protestants, and Blue-collar workers. McCarthy ruthlessly utilized scare tactics to get people to believe and follow him blindly into his accusations as to innocent citizens supporting Communism and either having them jailed or killed by providing phony evidence. Arthur Miller was not intimidated by this he wrote the Crucible as “an act of desperation” (Miller). This desperation was to counteract the lack of speaking out about personal beliefs during the Red Scare for the fear of breaking the law. In The Crucible, Miller wrote about a character named John Proctor who is very similar to Miller himself. Both the author and the character had to overturn the same personal paralyzing guilt, not speaking out soon enough. Nonetheless, their eventual overcoming of this guilt leads them to becoming the most forthright voice against the madness around them.

Statements from Hale show that he has realized the error of his ways. He decides to “shut [his] conscience no more” (223) and quits the court. Hale can no longer suppress his beliefs about the court and in effect, like Pontius Palter, absolves himself from the court. Next, Hale’s Words are used to show the immense amount of guilt that rests on his shoulder. Hale walks the prisons of Salem and, in knowing that “there is blood on [his] head” (234), “counsels Christians they should belie themselves” (234) even though he is also belying his reputation as reverend by doing this.
When people are put in tense and difficult situations, they lose control. John and Elizabeth Proctor, and Mary warren, all exhibit this throughput the play. John exhibits courage, in the sense that he found the strength to keep his name and lose his life rather than keep sinning and lie. Mary Warren displays weakness when she falls to Abby once again, in the end, instead of sticking to her story and assisting John, in freeing Elizabeth. Elizabeth illustrated how difficult it was to tell the truth in life or death situations. A very famous man once said, “There is nothing to fear but fear itself.” (Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1933). This is certainly true when it comes to Arthur Miller’s, The Crucible. Arthur Miller lived through the Red Scare, also known as McCarthyism. After living through this era and being one of the accused communists Miller wrote the book titled The Crucible in 1952. This book told the story of the Salem witch trials with some modifications to make it more relevant to the current situation. The book ultimately became an allegory devoted solely to McCarthyism. In The Crucible it uses situations such as the actual trials; direct comparisons of the characters in the book to those that participated in the McCarthy trials and, the atmosphere of the two events were almost identical.
Reverend Parris is the character that initiates the hysteria of the Salem witch trials, in a community where authorities wasted no time minding the business of it's citizens, what should have been seen as teen frivolity was blown into one of the ugliest moments in American History. Parris sparks this by firstly acting on his own paranoia, which the reader would find in the introduction 'he believed he was being persecuted where ever he went';, and calling Reverend Hale in an attempt for self-preservation '….if you trafficked with spirits in the forest I must know it now, for surely my enemies will, and they will ruin me with it.'; This statement says a lot about the character of Reverend Parris: a greedy, power hungry man who is more concerned with his own reputation than the souls of his niece and daughter. He always acts on fear, a fear that he will lose his position of power in the community. Parris does not want the trials to end as a fraud because the scandal of having a lying daughter and niece would end his career in Salem.
For instance, Parris, Abigail’s uncle and the main reverend of Salem, feels great at first when people started to get accused of being witches. He knows that witchery is unlikely in Salem because the girls admitted to just playing. However, when Parris claims that Abigail can see spirits, he saves his position in the church. It is only when he sees that he may lose his life due to this lie, that he wants to stop. Parris expresses this to the judges, “Tonight, when I open my door to leave my house—a dagger clattered down” (200). Parris starts to care when his life is at stake, but he was stress-free for a while. He foresaw positive effects of this lie, but he understands his mistake of letting the executions continue. Lastly, Proctor admits to the judge that he had an affair with Abigail because he wants this injustice to end. The judge takes Abigail’s side, but they still ask Elizabeth to confirm or deny Proctor’s confession because she is known for only telling the truth. The judge demands an
People are mad at Parris because of everything that is going on: “Tonight, when I open my door to leave my house- a dagger clattered to the ground” (Miller 1324). Parris, the town minister, is getting a lot of blame for all that has been going on lately in Salem. His neighbors wanted to prove a point of how angry they are by throwing a dagger at his door. Parris is a coward and is too afraid to just tell the truth about what happened in the woods that night with the girls. He is afraid his own name will be in parish, yet he is not worried about anyone else’s danger. The town has been torn apart with all of this witchcraft nonsense: “There be so many cows wanderin’ the highroads, now their masters are in jails, and much disagreement who they will belong to now” (Miller 1321). Animals are being left uncared for and are just running ransom through the streets. People are arguing about who they belong to, wanting to keep the animals for themselves. Neighbors are accusing each other of witchcraft, and causing a lot of trouble. The tension is high, with a deep craving of revenge. (PrepPh). Some accuse because they want to take over that persons land for their own, or they have a bad history with them and want them gone. No reason is a good reason because they are not solid facts, just false accusations. A fear of riots runs through the town. Salem is surely unraveling, along with everyone in it.
The host, in this case, is represented by the Witch Trials and the accused. In the quote, “Surely Your Excellency is not taken by this simple lie.” (1307), Parris is responding to what Mary Warren said about not actually seeing spirits. This is an ironic statement by Parris, as he is trying to convince Danforth that Mary Warren is the one lying; when in reality, Parris and the girls are the ones lying. Parris is using his authority (or rather, trying) for purely selfish intentions. He knowingly supported sending innocent members of the Salem community to their deaths. Parris tends to use his authority when he is scared or worried about himself. Parris’ cowardice is plainly seen when he says, “Tonight, when I open my door to leave my house--a dagger clattered to the ground. You cannot hang this sort. There is danger for me. I dare not step outside at night!” (1324). Reverend Parris, the minister of Salem, is begging Danforth to not hang Proctor, Martha, and Rebecca. Unfortunately for Parris, his actions are futile. Parris differs from Danforth in that he does not use his authority in the name of God, but rather, he uses it only to protect his reputation. In Miller’s The Crucible, a prominent character introduced is Reverend Parris. As Salem’s minister, he has significant influence in the town’s court system. As a minister, it is one’s duty to live a life devoted to being a spiritual leader. However, Reverend Parris is far from being a minister and is not a true spiritual leader because of his greed, dishonesty, and reputation.
An individual’s role in society can vary with the number themes the characters exhibit. When there are signs of fate, cruelties, weaknesses, and desires for justice and catharsis the role of an individual becomes more complicated. In Antigone, most of those themes are shown thus a single person’s influence or role on society is very small and complicated to attain. However in The Lottery the society has most of the control and there is not many signs of those characteristics so the role of a person is simplified because they are nothing compared to the society combined. Finally, in The Penalty of Death, there are signs of many of the themes but since it is the societies influence against that of an individuals, it is simplified because they have to work together.
Fear also played an important role in The Crucible. The girls were afraid of being accused as witches themselves, so they started accusing other people in the town of being witches. Moreover, many people who were accused of being witches confessed to being witches because they were scared of death. People who confessed to witchcraft and dealing with the devil only stayed in the jail for a short time while others who refused to give in were hanged. Towards the end of the play, Abigail and Mercy ran away with huge amounts of money because they were afraid that if the authorities found out that they were lying they would be punished severely.
Parris is greedy. John Proctor accuses Parris of this several times. Reverend gives weak justifications, but never denies any of the accusations. Parris's repeated demonstrations of exceedingly selfish behavior don't help his case. He's also afraid that if people think there's witchcraft in his household, he'll lose his position as minister of Salem.
