In many hospitals around the world, patients in the adult Neurological ICU experience a low quality of life and the hospital staff has limited resources to monitor the patients. Traumatic brain injury, or TBI, patients are recovering in an environment where they have monotone environments and have limited movements. The patients can experience cases of depression, disrupted sleep cycles, or have longer recovery times. Recently, I was able to attend the Heads in The Game Research program at the University of Mississippi to research solutions to help TBI patients in the Neuro ICU. We finally settled on making a headband or cap that would monitor and improve sleep cycles. The headband would have 4 or more EEG sensors positioned on the front and back of the headband. The headband would also have some type of Bluetooth headphones to play white, brown, or pink noise to promote sleep. The headband would transmit the data via Bluetooth or Wifi to a companion app that would produce a user-friendly chart to show the sleep quality of the patient and ways to improve. After establishing what the headband would do, we looked into different materials and hardware for the device. We knew that the material for the headband would have to be soft, durable, bacteria-resistant, elastic, and waterproof. Being a part of the research group gave me an inside look at what occurs in the field of research. Working alongside the undergraduate students taught me that not all solutions are viable. One of the experiences I learned the most from happened when my group ran into problems to get the final product. Developing a headband was not our first solution to help TBI patients. I learned that when your first or tenth solution does not work, you keep going until you find a solution that will be able to help others because that is the job of a researcher. Researchers seek solutions to help improve the quality of life for mankind and to broaden its horizons of the unknown. In recent years, there has been an increase in research investigating the long-term effects of repeated head trauma on the brain, especially in athletes. Following his discovery of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), Dr. Bennet Omalu inspired a movement of research aimed at establishing better safety standards and protocols in football. It was not until 2002 that the initial connection between repetitive head trauma, such as concussions, and brain injury was suspected (Ott, 2015).

Did you know, that someone suffers from a brain injury every 21 seconds (Haas)? Children get concussions all the time, and most of the time they go unnoticed. The majority of concussions happen when one is playing a sport such as football, hockey, or lacrosse. Many famous athletes have had their careers, even their lives cut short due to concussions. Brain damage and death can result from serial concussions (Schafer). When one suffers from a concussion, one’s brain needs time to recover physically and mentally. Between 2002 and 2006, statistics showed that 52,000 people died from concussions and about 275,000 were hospitalized (Fundukian). Everyone’s recovery process is different (“Injury and Pain Care”). Although concussions seem minor, they are very serious brain injuries that may result in severe damage to one’s brain.

Traumatic brain injury effects people of all ages and is a major cause of death and disability worldwide. A traumatic brain injury can be caused by a blow or jolt to the head that disrupts normal functions of the brain Also, traumatic brain injury can cause physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and behavioral affects.
An anonymous person once said, "He who has health has hope; and he who has hope has everything." Ever since I was a young girl, I always knew I wanted to do something with helping people. But as I grew up, I also took an interest in sports, which leads me to where I am today. I would like to be able to help people in the sports ' world. In this essay, I plan to research concussions and how the long-term effects can impact people for the rest of their lives. Through research, I have learned exactly what a concussion is, the long-term effects and severity, and finally the treatments for a concussion. This relates to my senior project because for my final product, I will be presenting the lasting effects of concussions.
Over the course of this class I feel like I have become a much better writer. When I go back and look at some of my Journal entries and assignments that I did at the beginning of the semester, I can’t help but tense up at some of the things I wrote. Sometimes the things I was writing didn’t flow well, or I might have even have missed glaring grammar mistakes.
As a second language learner I have never expected myself to be a perfect writer throughout the semester. Even If English was my first language still, I would not be a perfect writer. It is not about first or second language, it is about how well I understand the learning objectives. Then organizing and writing with my own ideas and putting them in my paper. From the year 2001 to 1005 children aged 5-18 accounted for 2.4 million emergency room visits due to sports related injuries. Of these visits around 6 percent involved a concussion(The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Every athlete that receives a concussion does not necessarily go to the emergency room. Not only was I able to make more better essays but I also learned important topics such as how education creates an impact in the world. My involvement in the Learning Team environment at the University has been a great learning experience. When we were assigned teams at the end of the first week, I did not really know what to expect. I have worked on teams numerous times in my career, both in the professional and private sectors. The teams I have worked on have always been to either produce a product or improve a process. Learning has always been a part of these teams, but I have never been on a team whose specific purpose was centered on learning.

This brain computer can now be used by strapping a transmitter to the patient’s head and wired electrodes into the skull would their thought command to be delivered wirelessly as fast as a home internet connection. Arto Nurmikko, the professor who led the creation of this wireless system states “the device transmits data out of the brain at rate of 48 megabits per second (Regalado, 1, 2015)” and use only a fraction of power of what a smartphone would use. Operant Conditioning is a way of learning that uses rewards and punishments for certain behaviors. It was first coined by BF Skinner. It is also known as Skinner Conditioning. It creates an association between a consequence and a behavior. Sometimes it is also referred to as response-stimulus conditioning.
