John Ellwood and Eric Patashnik’s “In Praise of Pork” argues the reasons why Congress requires “pork” to function efficiently. The two authors argue, in order for painful but necessary bills, such as tax increases or budget cuts, to be passed, appropriations must be utilized to alleviate some of the pain. Furthermore, they bring up the contention that “pork” will not be leaving the political landscape any time soon, if ever. Therefore, it is almost obligatory of a representatives to ensure that federal spending on local projects go towards programs that have a positive impact on the population. Yet, in this prospect, a problem is created because legislators will not always be completely concerned with the public good. Instead ,they will be

Varying theories such as rational choice theory, trait theory, and social structure theory are commonly used to explain why crime happens. Application of these three theories in discussing the crimes of Richard Speck can help us to better understand which of the theories may apply and perhaps help give us insight into why he committed his crimes. But they are more beneficial when not looking at a single specific crime, but the person and all the crimes they may have committed throughout their criminal careers.
Source two accurately depicts total war from 1914-1918 and has features of European life through its utilization of death and battles. The piece also uses religion to express its message. Total War in the early twentieth century was brutal and contained numerous tragic deaths due to the advanced technologies which Péguy depicts honestly in his 1914 poem “Blessed Are.” Charles Péguy, a Frenchman, utilizes satire through repeating the phrase “just war.” He states that a lot of men died due to problems that could have been solved on a political, not warlike basis. Péguy opens almost every line of his poem with the phrase “Blessed are,” which mimics the Beatitudes. Nearly all of Péguy’s work expresses his nationalism as well as his concern for
In the story “Two Kinds”, the author, Amy Tan, intends to make reader think of the meaning behind the story. She doesn’t speak out as an analyzer to illustrate what is the real problem between her and her mother. Instead, she uses her own point of view as a narrator to state what she has experienced and what she feels in her mind all along the story. She has not judged what is right or wrong based on her opinion. Instead of giving instruction of how to solve a family issue, the author chooses to write a narrative diary containing her true feeling toward events during her childhood, which offers reader not only a clear account, but insight on how the narrator feels frustrated due to failing her mother’s expectations which leads to a large conflict between the narrator and her mother.

The most recent, the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 (Child Nutrition Reauthorization Bill) provides necessary guidelines for our government 's involvement in school lunches. The Kids Act improves the choice of foods the State distribution agencies purchase for their school districts and allows for stricter food choices; however, this act leaves the decision to the state government. Though the Kids Act has not ensured healthier food it is, as Rebecca Edwalds said, “ By becoming the first piece of legislation to impose a federal nutritional education requirement, the Kids Act is a big step in the right direction” (Edwalds 1061). Edwalds then proposes an amendment to the Kids Act, including substantial guidelines rather than broad, open-ended recommendations. “The proposed amendment seeks to strike a balance between the need for more concrete guidelines and the nuances of different school districts” (Edwalds
Over the years, in response to national crisis, many of the government's powers, particularly those over social programs, were centralized to the federal level. However, in recent years, an increasing number of people on Capitol Hill and across the country want to devolve, or transfer, power from Washington, D.C. to state and local governments. After the 1994 elections, the Republican majority in Congress pu...

This article addresses a problem of limited spots’ availability in Pre-K programs. The income of many middle-class families is too high to qualify for state-funded programs but is not high enough to pay for private schools. Since Pre-K programs are income based, many middle family kids miss the opportunity to attend them and are not ready for kindergarten. Some parents, like Bridget Green-single mother of three, decide to quit their jobs in order to qualify.
Kingdon explains the public policy process using three different streams. The first stream is the problem stream. Kingdon explains that there is at all times a set of problems that a country is facing (Lovell, 9). Members of congress as well as the executive branch consider only some of these problems. Often times a crises or well-publicized event will set certain problems as precedent over others. Over the last decade, there has been a rise in concern for the state environment. Much focus has been directed towards issues such as climate change and green house gasses. Powerful actors in both Congress as well as the public eye are taking strong notice ...
A good representative doesn’t look at their job as just a salary. “During the early Congresses, being a senator or representative was a part-time occupation” (Davidson, Oleszek, Lee, & Schickler, 2015, 35). Today, a good representative spends more time working with other elected officials to rectify the issues that all people are hindered by. Although, many people do not believe that members of congress are in session for a sufficient amount of time to figure out solutions to the issues that affect
The majority of policy studies assume that, once a policy has been formulated, it will be implemented. This is not unreasonable, after all. The scholars who analyze policies and build models of the policy processes do base their work on the assumption that the policy will be implemented, exactly as it is. Furthermore, this assumption extends to another: that the desired results of the policy will be close, at least, to those expected by the policy makers. It should be noted that this assumption is shared by many common citizens. As Thomas R. Dye said in 1972, “We assume that when Congress adopts a policy and appropriates money for it, and when the executive branch organizes a program, hires people, spends money, and carries out activities designed to implement the policy, the effects of the policy will be felt by society and the effects will be those intended by the policy.”
Public policy is something that determines the legislative process in America, and around other states. What would you do if policy affected your area? Do you know your fellow state representative you can contact? These are things you should know about the public policy process, since we are the people to elect representatives on our behalf to represent our ideal views. In the first part of this essay I will discuss why policy change is incremental. Through defining incrementalism I will then compare, and contrast the definition with the rational model of public policy. The second part of this essay will cover a significant area of the public policy spectrum that I have researched. I shall then use a policy instrument that government has relied
We need a better system for our government funding so that we don’t waste our money when we could be using it on other things that are more important than giving people a free life. If we want to stop the obesity crisis, we have to start buckling down and starting with the basics.
A greedy congressman would probably forget his responsibilities, and duties as a congressman; this would only make it worse for that particular state.
