Increasing your emotional intelligence, particularly in a high stress environment such as
high school or college. This is an important skill to work and improve on because if one becomes
too emotionally unstable then dramatic events can occur to that particular person. What is
emotional intelligence most would ask? It is the ability to be aware of, control, express ones
emotions, and handle interpersonal relationships both judiciously and empathetically. It is
important that people assess their emotional intelligence because it can help them improve
themselves. There are many ways to assess, reflect, and improve one’s emotional intelligence.
There are multiple ways to assess ones emotional intelligence such as reflecting on
behaviors, using Conover, and reflection from

others. Most people know themselves very well and know how they act. Most will know if they are rambunctious, quiet, full of anxieties, or however they act or behave. Conover is another way that people can reflect on their emotions or behaviors.
Conover is an online website that students can use to reflect on their behavior and see
as to how they act. A lot of JROTC programs use Conover to assess their cadets. It tells how
much empathy they have how well they manage their anger, stress and all sorts of behaviors.
Others that don’t have the resources, can simply ask their peers, teachers, parents, councilors or
other people that are relatively close to assess themselves.
Once when they get their feedback from whatever resource they use, they can truly
reflect on themselves to see what areas they need to improve on. Conover does a marvelous job
on doing this. It shows a graph that shows which areas were weak and strong. This allows one to
reflect and make note as to which areas they need to improve on. If one doesn’t have access to
Conover, then they could simply ask their peers for honest feedback to see how they could better
in some way shape or form.
Once when the individual can reflect, they can make the choice to improve in that area.
For example, if one struggles to have empathy for others, then they can start to try and put
themselves into others shoes. Or if one has troubles trusting others, then they can start to try
and put trust and faith into others. This is obviously the toughest part to improve one’s emotional intelligence. This is where most struggle to cooperate. After a period of time however, they can reassess and reflect to see where they are still struggling or really excel in that area or areas. It is important to understand emotional intelligence and how to improve on it. Of course a dramatic event in one’s life will have an effect on their emotions and feelings, but that is the reason why it is important for that person to understand their strengths and weakness of their emotional intelligence. Once when they improve those areas they improve as a person as well. Overall, understanding, assessing, reflecting and improving their emotional intelligence is just a way to know themselves better so they can improve as a person or to help others improve. Perks of all of this, is that you as an individual get a chance to see you or others improve their lives and feel good about themselves.
Identify and sort out and summarize the problem(s). Decide which is the most important problem.
Empathy is used to create change in the world by reaching out to the emotions of people and attending to them. It is used to help others learn and decide on matters that would not be reasonable without feelings attached to them. Empathy helps bring together communities that would have long ago drifted apart, but instead welcomed all who were different. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. This attribute of human-beings really allows us to not only attend to situations as if they were our own, but it allows us to feel most of what others feel because humans are very much alike in some ways. In many of the articles and novels that we have read this quarter, characters from different pieces of context have portrayed empathy whether it was toward
time, then they can achieve their goals in a less stressful way, and end up feeling better as a
Many people show empathy for humans like homeless people or ill family members or even just someone in a bad state. These people you can say show responsibility towards those events that are unpredictable in life. There are many people that show this, many people that explain this, and even many people that cause those emotions. These people don’t feel the same things we feel, these people see society in different eyes, in different ways, and in other words in different perspectives. They feel that they cannot forgive people for events that caused them anger, depression, or even made them feel like if they weren't worth anything.
For example, as an overseer you watch each individual child that is in your care, I felt disturbed when a child’s progress is different than the other children. This made me wonder whether this particular child’s development is ordinary or if the child may have an incapacity that is influencing his advancement and learning. In my readings of “What Makes a Leader”, Goleman stated that you need empathy- understanding others people emotional makeup (p.3).Goleman went on to explain, “Empathy means thoughtfully considering employees feelings” (2011, p. 16). Dealing with this particular child caused me to think about what Goleman said in his writings for leadership. I was so mindful to consider his emotions on the most proficient method to manage him and his
Emotional Intelligence, also known as ‘EI’, is defined as the ability to recognize, authoritize and evaluate emotions. The ability to control and express our own emotions is very important but so is our ability to understand, interpret and respond to the emotions of others. To be emotionally intelligent one must be able to perceive emotions, reason with emotions, understand emotions and manage emotions.
(Yoder-Wise, 2015, p. 7). Emotional intelligence involves managing the emotions of others while owning personal emotions. According to Skholer, “Researchers define emotional intelligence (EI) as the ability to recognize/monitor one’s own and other people’s emotions, to differentiate between different feelings, and to use emotional information to guide thinking, behavior, and performance.” (Skholer & Tziner, 2017).
Empathy is the ‘capacity’ to share and understand another person’s ‘state of mind’ or their emotion. It is an experience of the outlook on emotions of another person being within themselves (Ioannides & Konstantikaki, 2008). There are two different types of empathy: affective empathy and cognitive empathy. Affective empathy is the capacity in which a person can respond to another person’s emotional state using the right type of emotion. On the other hand, cognitive empathy is a person’s capacity to understand what someone else is feeling. (Rogers, Dziobek, Hassenstab, Wolf & Convit, 2006). This essay will look at explaining how biology and individual differences help us to understand empathy as a complex, multi-dimensional trait.
The next tip is “give honest and sincere appreciation.” A recurring theme in this book, is that people want to feel like they are important. There is a driver forcing you to do everything in life. For example, as a chairperson of the Business Week publicity committee, I am working hard to promote the Business Week activities and increase attendance using creative tactics. When people show up to events because of a promotion I created, it makes me feel important and gives me a sense of fulfillment. Such is the case when dealing with others. If they know they are appreciated, they will feel important and will continue doing a good job in the future.
Analyze the problem - identify the root causes of the problem and use charts and diagrams as needed.
Reflection is a key part of our personal development plan that is significant from both academic and employment perspectives. It investigates and someway measures our present level of skills and knowledge by looking back to reflect our latest performance and monitoring future improvements (Gallagher K., 2013, p. 23-24).
The definition of personality deals with certain pattens of behavior, thoughts, and feelings. These patterns of behavior, thoughts, and feelings stem from combinations of various traits. In order to understand a full personality, then each trait must be examined. One trait that can be examined further is empathy. It is important to know what empathy is, it’s origins, dynamics, correlates, manifestations, advantages, and disadvantages, in order to examine its development, and apply it to my own life. The answers to these questions also allows a deeper study of one personality trait that contributes to a full personality. Knowing the individual traits of a person allows the whole personality o be better evaluated.
Two strengths I learned during my Self Awareness assessment were being a good listener and showing loyalty. I really try to be a good listener in all situations. I like to hear the whole story or complete process in whatever it may be. I am cautious about making decisions without having all the details. I don't mind taking the time out to get the details. Yes, it may take some time up front and may not lead to a quick decision but in the long run it prevents mistakes and errors as well as misjudging which can lead to more heartache and pain down the road. Loyalty is also very important to me in the work center. Knowing that you are devoted and committed to the success of the organization will motivate your people to do the same. They also need to know that they can come to you with a problem whether it is personal or work related. This will allow them to be more open to bringing problems to your attention that could later have a disastrous effect on the organization in the future. Both pers...
