Now that we’ve made our way through the journey of Ken Jennings’ incredible book I feel as if it’s important for me to try to sway you to become more involved in geography. It’s a truly fascinating subject and can take you places you never thought you could ever visit. If you don’t want to leave your home, at least buy an atlas, map, or visit Google Earth. You never know what you could discover in your journey. If you don’t think maps or an atlas is your thing, you never know if you never try. Jennings created a journey, for me I would have never cared to take had it not been assigned as a college class assignment, but now I’m so glad I did. Jennings shined a different light on geocaching, and map hunting. He made it fun, interesting, and overall thrilling.
Being prepared before someone enters the desert should be their number one priority. First off Alloway said people need to have a hat with a wide brim and closed crown so it will protect your head and face from sunlight. Next, wear loose fitting long sleeves and pants so that air can be circulated easy. Sunglasses that exclude ultra-violet light are a necessity to help prevent cataracts later on in life. Some other areas of preparation are carrying sufficient amounts of water, first aid and survival kit for the desert environments, and some useful knowledge. ( 2) These are the major things needed in the preparations of going on and exploration in the desert.
The things they were required to carry depended on the mission, job title, as well as standard necessities. “Lieutenant Jimmy Cross carried a compass, maps, code books, binoculars, a .45 caliber pistol, as well as a strobe light.” The RTO (radio transmissions officer) carried a 26lbs PCR-25 radio. The machine gunner carried an M-60 which weighed 23lbs, loaded. All of them carried standard M-16s with around 20 rounds which weighed 17lbs. They carried silent awe for the terrible power of the things weapons they used. “In the heat of early afternoon, they would remove their helmets and flak jackets, walking bare, which was dangerous but which helped ease the strain. They...
There are many factors that contribute to staying alive in this environment such as natural ones that include altitude, temperature, weather, mountain conditions that end up creating physical and psychological issues for the human specimen. A combination of experience, modern technology and on-feet thinking is used to bypass these factors. Mount Everest is the world’s highest mountain peaking into the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere at 8848 metres above sea level. At this level of altitude the weather is drastically different to the normal ground-level weather a human would be familiar to. Freezing winds over 160km/h are a constant hassle that impact the visibility and temperature. With temperature always below minus 50 degrees Celsius and a lack of oxygen by 14%, this becomes difficult for the climber to function physically and psychologically which lead to numerous medical conditions such as headaches, edema, frostbite, confusion, nausea, chest problems which is also usually related to dehydration. To keep the winds out of the climbers’ face they wear glacier glasses with side covers and synthetic bandanas with a balaclava, ski goggles and a baseball cap. This helps the block out the wind and cold enabling the climber to see much more efficiently in winds rushing at their face. Layering is a technique that prevents the human body from freezing to death. It involves of wearing layers of lightweight fleece, synthetic zip-up jackets and insulated synthetic pants. These clothing are designed to insulate the human body by keeping the human body’s warmth within the walls of the clothing. The same material is used to make the sleeping bags which the climbers use. Other mountain conditions

Survival, something we hear almost daily in TV, movies and shows but we never realize what survival truly implies, what it truly requires of someone. Survival is a feat humans have been accomplishing for many hundreds of thousands of years but in this age we are starting to forget what survival truly means and what it requires from a person. Most of us may not put much thought on exactly survival is we just know that it means to try to stay alive but that is far from the full definition. There are many hundreds of books in which discuss the requirements of survival such as Is Survival Selfish? or in a book which the main character has to survive challenging obstacles such as The Hunger Games, and Night. Throughout these books we get to see the main characters survive several horrifying concentration camps or battle arenas thanks to the strength they had to get back up, determination to keep them fighting even when it seemed that they lost and the resilience to survive the
The necessary use of one’s hands during extravehicular activity makes the spacesuit’s gloves a critical component.
To cope with the cold, I had to pack bulky warm clothing, and sleeping gear. The Campin' Gaz lantern and stove, both blue and oddly shaped, were necessary for a cold night without a fire. Large, stiff, blue tarps were needed to repel the wet snow while heavy, green foldable shovels comprised the majority of the weight in my pack. The down filled, sleeping bag received much of the attention of my pack's available space. A Kelty 5400 cubic inch Red Cloud swelled with these items, impatient to be worn.
Survival is indeed a word that can change a human’s perspective on what they need to do to remain alive. In order to survive, people have been known to go to great lengths and to do things they would not ordinarily do. I have noticed this throughout my life by watching movies, and reading books. Most of the time, it is the main character who comes face to face with death, and does anything to keep themselves alive. I have set up a few great examples that show’s people in their survival situations, and what they will do to get out alive.

Firefighting has been a thankless job since the beginning. It started out as a group of people with one objective; to extinguish a fire. They did not worry about the consequences or repercussions from not having any personal protective equipment. The equipment to help keep all firemen safe has drastically changed from being non-existence to the upmost importance. Without safety equipment, firemen cannot perform their job to the best of their ability. Firemen use turnout gear which has three major parts; helmet, jacket, and SCBA.
