Suicide is Prominent in The Russian Culture What is suicide? Suicide is a mental illness that cause a person to take their own life. There are different reasons why a person may decide to commit suicide. Suicide is not done in only one set of age group or gender. This mental illness is a global epidemic that affects all ages, nationalities, economic level, and cultures (nimh). There are statistics and studies that the Russian culture has an extremely high numbers of suicide with this culture. There are barriers that can affect communicating health promotion in the Russian culture, which may consist of different languages. Language can be a major barrier with communicating with a person that does not speak English. One have to keep in mind techniques to make sure the message is getting across. A possible way is by a translator or providing written information in the person language. Other barriers are beliefs, religions, values, traditions, social structure, food and even their choice of beverages. In contrast, when a person has good health that means that they are taking of their self correctly. Many may seek home remedies first when sick instead of medical treatment. American and Russian culture are opposite in the medicine protocol. In the Russian culture the patient and the physician have a close relationship and emotional connection. It may be shocking to a person that is not familiar with this culture and walk into a patient’s room and see that patient naked or just their undergarments on. The reason for that is because the Russian culture does not believe in wearing gowns when they’re going to be examined by their physician. It is vital to be sensitive with the Russian culture with addressing the mental illness, suicide. The goal is to provide enough awareness without disrespecting their health
