Student Affairs officials play a huge role of the higher education experience for students. Student affairs officials experience are ever-evolving from the demands of their duties, for example, creating ways to recruit students, alcohol abuse, mental health awareness, student movements, student conduct, and sexual assault/violence. Student affairs professionals also help students ' begin their journey of growth and self-exploration academically and socially. Indeed, challenges arrive while working tirelessly carrying the mission statement of the university framing it into their everyday work with students. I want to work with all pupils advocating inequalities implicitly and explicitly of underrepresented groups. I am a firm believer in education and its power to better people 's lives; I plan to be a director working on equity and inclusion of all students at a university. There are far too many people left behind lacking the proper education afforded to them. I firmly believe it is never too late to gain an education. As a future director dedicated to inclusiveness offering my personal experiences and my attained knowledge to my future students in order to encourage students with their goals in life. My support of students in earning an education will lead to more auspicious fortunes which will influence the rising generation. My dream job would be opening a center focusing on research on retention and graduation rate of colleges and universities in the United States and globally. I will like to pursue a Ph.D. in a few years so allowing the ability to move up in the student affairs profession. I will like to be a Dean of Academic Affairs someday. I have studied abroad twice; I find myself exploring ways to lead students of color abroad on the pursuits of building global relationships providing opportunities for students. Over the years there has been a significant decrease in the percentage of African American male success in higher education. Not only does this effect society as a whole, but more importantly this effects the African- American community as well. The high percentage of uneducated African- American males will result in increased crime rate, shortened life span and overall hard life. However this epidemic can be stopped by looking at the contributing factors of why there is a decrease in African-American male success in higher education and how to change it. Throughout the paper I will be addressing the issues as to why there are not more black men in higher education, by looking at the contributing factors such as environmental stressors, student’s perceptions, racial identity issues, academic and social integration, family upbringing and the media. The attrition rate of African- American male students could be changed and decreased drastically. Increasing our understanding of these differences would enable us to better meet the needs of young black men.

Colleges and Universities play a major role in developing the behavioral patterns of young adults. Students who attend Carlford have expressed their dissent with the current environment of the university. Because of these underling issues, Carlford’s retention rates amongst minorities have suffered. There are times where an incident directly affects your position and there are other times where there issues that affect the entire institution. As a byproduct of the change in college culture, it will create a “friendlier” environment for first generation. Students need to feel safe rather than out of place. Additionally, prestigious institutions need to take initiative to create new programs that will make college a painless transition for first generation students by implementing new policies such as mentors or clubs. As many colleges and universities have not taken the initiative to help first-generation students, North Carolina State University is one of the few exceptions. As a fellow first generation college student at North Carolina State University, I have reaped many benefits from the different organizations they have around campus. Just as in matters of women’s rights, the plight of minorities in higher education is a matter which stems from lack of representation. On both high school and university campuses, minority teachers and proffers are scarce, and minority students make up a minute portion of colleges student bodies. This issue is perpetuated through state and federal laws, as well as the policies of universities, in a fashion highly reminiscent of De Jure segregation. For example, since California prohibited the consideration of race in the admissions process, the percent of minorities accepted into California colleges has dropped dramatically. This is an issue which impacts all, not just underrepresented individuals, as society becomes more globalized, diversity continues to grow in importance. My position on the department head council within our school affords me a voice in various structural and academically-concerned decisions. This awareness of my own prejudice will allow me to add a critical perspective to the conversation that considers the ways that the working-class population may be affected by our institutional practices. Social media is defined as websites and applications used for social networking. “As of September 2013, seventy-one percent of online adult use Facebook, eighteen percent use Twitter and seventeen percent use Instagram, twenty-two percent use PInterest, and another twenty-two percent use LinkedIn.
