Local Government and Regional Development in Western Australia (2003) states that above 70 per cent of Western Australia’s population dwell in Perth Metropolitan Area (urban area), where the areas only cover about one tenth of Western Australia’s land area. It means that, while regional areas cover more than 90 per cent of Western Australia’s land area, but there is only below one third of State’s population live in the areas. The term regional areas in this essay refers to the nine non-metropolitan regions, such as Kimberley, Pilbara, Gascoyne, Mid West, Goldfields-Esperance, Wheatbelt, Peel, South West, and Great Southern. First, gaining regional planning knowledge helps to achieve balanced regional development and equitable growth in measuring the opportunity and demand of regional resources not only for regional areas itself, but also for urban metropolitan area. Second, learning regional planning develops consistency between planning system in Western Australia. It connects State government and local government in order to achieve better communication and coordination. Third, acquiring regional planning helps to run current development well and foresee future changing that might be happened regarding to accomplish sustainable development ways. While population density in regional areas in Western Australia is very low, but reflecting to future issues regional areas may become more focused and essential area. This is happened because Perth metropolitan areas almost reach the limitation of its carrying capacity. Moreover, people more realise to increase more liveable and better quality of life by living in regional areas. Many opportunities, such as jobs, attractions, and tourism areas also become considerations for people to move and live in the regions. Therefore, it is very important to studying regional planning system to gain skill and knowledge about integrated regional development and preparing qualified regional planners who know well about regional areas and can solve the regional problems that might be
