800 words - Christiana Aiyeola Priority Seats Are Like Marmite; You Either Love Them, or You Hate Them. The number of people that see priority seats is ever growing every day. These seats are located the front of most buses asking regular passengers to relocate the other seats nearer the back of the bus. The debatable subject about it is, ‘Are they really needed? Wouldn’t we already give up our seats for the elderly?’ So I ask; Priority seats - Manner or Menace? Whether or not you believe that priority seats are needed to tell us what we already know; those who regularly take the bus to school or work will have undoubtedly experienced sitting in a priority seat. There is a certain feeling of nervousness that you experience, as you carefully keep an eye on the front door, steadily waiting on the edge of your seat, expecting the arrival of an OAP. Next, one of two things happens – one enters, or one doesn’t. Either way you are left pondering one question: ‘Why did I ever sit here in the first place?’ If a senior member of the public does enter you are forced to transfer all of your belongings elsewhere; if one doesn’t, your trip is ruined anyway since your peaceful journey has been interrupted by your constant watch of the front door. The truth is, even though priority seats are not made to make you feel guilty, they accomplish his by just existing. They are supposed to guarantee a safe and comfortable journey for all. Instead, they do the complete opposite by ensuring that those who do not harbour some sort of disability or are not of old age have to suffer from disapproving looks from other passengers as well as an indecisive inner conscience. This is unacceptable. Are we are better off without them? The British public are not s... ... middle of paper ... ...ere so much kerfuffle over one seat you ask? Simple - there is a bigger more philosophical idea behind the priority seat. Yes, it does sound ridiculous - though it makes sense. Society has created yet another item that was supposed to be put to good use, but has been spoiled by those who have chosen to take notice of its correct purpose. Can we ever create an item solely to have a good function? Priority seats have a good idea behind them, but until we become a more civilised society, they will never show their true colours. Our solution is simple: we teach our kids manners when they are young, so that soon there will be no need for priority seats. In my opinion, I think the future is pretty bleak for them as they are the result of much conflict, though I can’t decide whether we need them. It all goes back to the main question; Priority seats – Manner or Menace?
Similarly, the context in which this is ethical or unethical is contextual. For the sake of the argument, it is assumed that the option to buy out of the queue is available to anyone who can pay. In certain situations, this practice is justifiable as well as profitable, such as in amusement parks. In Cedar Point (a fairly popular amusement park in Ohio), there is an option to buy a “fast pass”, a ticket that will allow the holder to wait for a lesser amount of time by granting them the ability to bypass the traditional line. This might be seen as unfair treatment at first, but the ability to pay for preferential treatment in a commercial setting is ethical given that every consumer has the ability to pay for the treatment. If a customer decides not to buy the fast pass, he or she is agreeing to wait for a potentially longer amount of time for a lesser cost. In certain scenarios, however, it is completely unacceptable to have this system, an example would be in a medical setting. In most emergency centers, patients may have to wait depending on the severity of their symptoms. A patient who needs stitches may need to wait for a patient that is suffering from a heart attack. Implementing a system in which patients could pay for priority would be unethical because it denies a space for a patient with in a life-threatening situation. In essence, money would be valued over life, which no moral standard states to be
There was a debate about this that people have been complaining that this act hasn’t been doing their job properly and there have been lots of anti-social behaviour going on and nothing is done about it. For the community in March 2003 the government had publish on the news that the Anti-social behaviour act tends to challenge Anti-social behaviour done by the society and are doing a good job of it and have now a have a bigger group that makes this act much more efficient. Also the people were very happy and said they feel much relaxed and safe at that time. For the public service such as the PCSO’s who could be the ones who could take care of these situations about anti-social behaviour and can be relied on to make sure it doesn’t happen and they also need to confirm that they have a good understanding of what happens and how to solve the situations. The offenders who do all this can be instantly punished by the ASBO’s by them taking the offenders to court and could possibly give a
Another thing is that people are forced to agree with the laws and if they don’t they are also thrown from society where they would either be killed or spend the rest of their miserable lives in the sloughs of the fringe people.
... The loyalty that we had to the British crown has in some senses faded, and become more of a celebrity fad that people follow for entertainment.
When evaluating the ticket lines we timed interactions at the purchase window from the time the purchaser began conversation to the time they left with their tickets and receipt. Along with measuring the data in time we also were careful to take note on the gender of the purchaser and the amount of people in their group. Groups were broken up between male, female, and kids or children. As measuring who is technically a child and who is not can be difficult in an observational study, we deemed that anyone accompanied by parents, and therefore being free of financial responsibility, were children.
After I observed four different boarding lines, I soon realized how impatient our society reacts to situations. As soon as the airline attendants announced the boarding for a certain flight, it seemed as if everybody rushed to the...
Parts that appear to have no purpose do not invalidate the fact that it is designed, as we do not need to be aware of the purpose of every part of the object.
The time I felt like I didn’t demonstrated this provision is when I was in the subway in Toronto during Christmas. There was this woman who was pregnant in the train riding with us and she was standing because all the seats were taken. I forgot to give her my seat because I was busy on the phone talking to my friend and we’re trying to find out the location of where my friend is. We lost him during a Christmas party. Luckily, the man next to me saw it and gave the woman his seat. I felt guilty because I could have done it, but I was too preoccupied trying to find where our lost friend is
The concept of social exclusion is complex. It is understood as a multidimensional and dynamic process. (Sliver, 1994; Levitas, 2005) Under the leadership of Prime Minister Tony Blair since 1997, social exclusion has become an agenda on the British social policy. (Levitas, 2005) The redistributive (RED), social integration(SID) and moral underclass(MUD) discourses are used as one of the models to examine the meanings of social exclusion shifts and changes in the political context. These discourses are not types of dimensions of exclusion, instead Weber suggested that they are indicators that show how the permutations of social exclusion reflected in different British policy implications. (Levitas, 1998) RED, SID and MUD are predominantly analytical
They should also begin remodeling the seats on older buses as well, but there are many who say that installing the seat belts in older models costs way too much money. Also, installing seat belts only on newly constructed school buses will create a situation where some school buses would have seat belts and other buses would not have seat belts. Thus, some students would be offered a safer school bus with seat belts than other students whose school buses do not have seat belts. Parents may lobby for their students to receive transportation in the safer school buses with seat belts. I understand that this could serve a very serious issue, but the faster we get all buses fixed the better and safer the trips for the students will be.
Stay seated at all times when the bus is in motion. Encourage your child to find a seat quickly and sit down right away. The child should sit in the seat and avoid hanging into the
Clearly the public has little faith in coalition governments as a government and in terms or representation. However by the end of the coalition over 60% of the public agreed with the government on its major reforms: health, austerity, tuition fees and the benefits cap. This would suggest that after the coalition the majority of the public felt represented as they agreed with the government to some extent. However Ormston (Co-Head of Social Attitudes, NatCen Social Research) argues in this article “Despite the fact that the public has gone off the notion of coalition government, it has seemingly accepted many of the coalition’s big reforms. In spite of the government’s narrative of austerity, or perhaps because of it, NHS satisfaction is back up, there is broad acceptance of tuition fees, and at least some cuts to benefits are popular.” Accepting government reforms is not the same as being represented in the first place and there is no way of proving that the people surveyed haven’t essentially change their opinions in their acceptance. The point is that people didn’t feel represented in the first place by a coalition over a single party and therefore I argue that single party governments are more
Capturing subjective perceptions of crowding regularly may prove to be a cumbersome and a costly exercise. Thus, it can be used as a mean to identify the gaps between the objective standards and subjective public perceptions. Further, it can be used to identify the cost of crowding by using the willingness to pay estimate of users for a less congested, more comfortable public transport system. The economic method used to calculate and value crowding is known as contingent valuation method, which has its roots in environmental economics and valuation of non-market goods. It is discussed in detail in the following section.
While these are matters concerning inanimate school bus parts and accessories that demand a timely upkeep, a human element also comes into play. And this is demonstrated through school bus drivers, who through their behavior bring in the safety element to every school bus ride. Ruling out an instance of a technical
As the roads are very busy nowadays, the public transportation disciplines are safety. Waiting at a bus can be a little risky and unsafe because students can be in a vulnerable location. Some of the bus stops are hidden, so not many college students are going to be around that area. This is a safety concern because students must know what is happening around their surroundings. A good suggestion of safety always brings a cell phone or a partner, especially taking the bus at night time. Moreover, buses are always crowded on a regular daily basic, and most of the time students might have to put up with being very close to abnormal
